Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

Identical sparkly silver “flower” arrangements in each window, almost exactly the same as the neighbour’s.

Minimalism, almost to the point the house looking too stark and unlived in.

Matchy matchy everything - no imagination at all.

Plain everything - no “pop” of pattern anywhere.

Textured ceilings.

Wooden or tiled living room floors with no rugs.

75 inch TVs in small rooms

TVs above a high fireplace which cause a crick in the neck to watch!

Curtains that stop half way between the window sill and the floor.

Unlined curtains.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 14/11/2022 07:04

Art that’s not original. It’s a weird one but I think it’s really odd when I see a generic print or reproduction up in a house. Everything else I think expresses a persons personality. My mums house is live laugh love and canvass prints everywhere. Not for me but it’s a cosy house and it makes her happy.

Yup! Isn’t it awful that people have different tastes.
Ffs, this ranks up there as one of the most middle class posts ever.

I've seen this & wondered if it means something 😆. I'd never see it before & then I was somewhere where everyone had one!

Oh and the obligatory floating wood sleep shelf thing over the fireplace. Only it's not a fireplace it's just a hole in the wall filled with candles 🙄

Lol, I was about to order one of these. It's not really in keeping with the rest of the living room, but I'm stumped on what else to put over the fireplace (which is just an empty gaping hole - to be filled with candles and pinecones, according to the law).

Seriously, if anyone has any ideas for what to do instead, I'm all ears!

LaGioconda · 14/11/2022 08:20

Kitchen islands, unless maybe it's a mahoosive kitchen. I don't want to be constantly negotiating round it, and IME as soon as you have two people in there you are constantly getting in each other's way.

@FlimFlam2 Show us a pic! Let us help slash be terrible human beings in the name of interiors.

Some things I like: just leave it bare, so (sealed) brick inside the hole and painted outside, no candles or nuffin just maybe a big glass buoy thing – think Atelier Ellis. A plain reclaimed surround and sealed brick inside, à la Jamb. Or I’ve long been in love with this Beata Heuman fireplace treatment:

Big interior design pet peeve: why don't houses in the UK EVER have laundry chutes? 😡

I think few houses are big enough to merit them.

Oh, I do like the tiled surround!!! Would work in our living room, especially with a modern-ish shelf above. Thank you. ❤️

Unfortunately, my living room is fully artexed (to look like woodchip wallpaper, of all things!) and very green. Also tiny, so all furniture is too large for the space. I would need several stiff drinks before I could muster up the courage to post a picture.

JanetSally · 14/11/2022 08:30

The kind of houses where everything goes into a skip every couple of years so the place can be redone in the latest fashion always feel dull and characterless to me.

Katypp · 14/11/2022 08:39

Q: What are your interior design hates?

Rest of world: Excessive sparkly things, plastic flowers, plastic panelling etc etc

Mumsnet (oh so superior) : Rainfall showers, wooden floors, granite worktops, integrated appliances (??)

Would anyone like to enlighten me what the good taste equivalent to any of the above are? Because I can't imagine electric showers, carpets, Formica and freestanding appliances going down too well either.

Tangerine32 · 14/11/2022 09:01

Grey everywhere and cold minimalist decor (no colour, books etc.), stickered writing on the walls (things like ‘family’ or ‘get naked’ in the bathroom), generally looking like the home owner is a massive Mrs Hinch fan, photos on the wall of adults (particularly big canvas ‘photo shoot’ style), generic prints on the wall that you see everywhere (like that grey highland cow with the bits of rainbow colour), black leather sofas (unless have young children and it was the sensible option), shag carpets, wallpaper that is meant to look like bricks or bookcases, massive TVs and everything else organised around it, and homes that are too sterile and showy in a way that compromises on comfort and practicality (like when there is a lack of somewhere convenient to put a cup down beside where you are sitting or the seats are really awkward to sit on), any kind of decor that leaves me scared I will spill and ruin it forever, and room that have a lack of cosy/not harsh lighting options.

But I feel bad writing this as my own home is far from perfect!

Darlingx · 14/11/2022 09:02

Plastic grass that then gets shat on by the dog and has to be hosed off but where does it go it just disperses it 🤮This I don’t get . I suppose perhaps you get less of muddy paws but it’s not a lawn for anything but the dog’s toilet then. I see plastic lawns a lot in London and it kind of makes me sad. They just astro turfed a load of fields for a sports centre and got rid of the hedges and replaced them with wire fencing apparently they are working with nature but people’s back gardens are becoming the same as its low maintenance

I was thinking that last night, 😂

Some folks are acting all superior with interior design horrors of vaulted ceilings, beams, barn doors, luxury carpet, rainfall showers, fully tiled bathrooms, granite worktops, gloss units, roll top baths, chesterfields, plantation shutters, bifold doors, range cookers, agas, kitchen islands, integrated appliances, etc

Katypp · 14/11/2022 09:41

@Leafblowertime as I said upthread, I have noticed a real MN thing of taking something that most people would regard as an upgrade from standard, such as granite worktops or Hotel Chocolat chocolates and pretending that their taste is, so exquisite that they are not impressed by something so mainstream. Last year there was a thread where soneone wanted to buy a box of special chocolates and the responses just got more and more aspirational and ridiculous. I think I stopped reading at £20 for four chocolates, which the OP implied were the only ones she would eat as everything - everything - else was not good enough for her.

Yes i agree, if anything is expensive or aspirational in some way there are always posters who come on and say it’s just not good enough for them.

But it's all so bourgeois, dahling. Ghastly, conventional good taste. The horror!

To quote Jilly Cooper, 'It will be chiming doorbells and musical lavatory paper next ...'

Buteverythingsfine · 14/11/2022 10:11

Most of the thread is disparaging about ordinary people's taste (what do you think is in B and M except grey, pink, sparkly things, generic pics, that's what many people can afford!) There's always a few who have to go one better.

Greytea · 14/11/2022 10:20

But people might dislike things for a valid reason. Or like them. I don’t like shutters, because I think they are cold and hard-looking. I do have carpets - shock, horror - downstairs, and upstairs - with rugs on top - because they keep the house significantly warmer. We did have wood floors but carpeted over them. Much nicer and cosier.

Katypp · 14/11/2022 10:23

@Greytea but do you HATE them or just not that keen for your house? We chose granite but it doesn't mean I hate marble, quartz etc and think they are bad taste!

thebestcestmoi · 14/11/2022 10:29

Mrs Hinch house has no grey anymore, more beige and natural tones, pale greens and plants.

Think the whole ‘excessive grey everywhere’ was very much a few years ago now

No, I don’t think shutters are bad taste. They just wouldn’t work for us, because I like fabrics. They’re very common where I am and lots of houses have them. If I moved into a house that had them, I would keep them. I have black granite worktops and a high gloss white kitchen. That seems disapproved of here. It’s about 14 years old and I’m not changing it any time soon. The black granite is really practical, and I would definitely pick it again. The white doors still look nice, but I might pick something else if choosing now.

No fireplace

Hey, just give me the money for an expensive victorian semi and I'll get one.

We have a boring 1950s house. It had an awful fake logs electric fire when we moved in. (Which we took out so now have no fireplace)
What to do ...? no fire place = bad
....but is a fake one better...?
Or should we not have bought the house at all...?
