AIBU to think that people who put Christmas decorations up super early are just attention seekers?

My neighbour has had her house decorated fully for Christmas now for almost two weeks- they started going up on Oct 31st. Fully lit tree in the window, outdoor lights, Christmas wreath on the door- the works.

She’s done this since she moved next door to me five years ago and I assume she did it before that too.

Since I’ve known her, she’s also posted on Insta and her WhatsApp status each year on either Christmas Day or the 26th to show her decorations coming down and a general “I can’t spend another minute looking at them” message.

If she put them up at Christmas and not at Halloween, she wouldn’t be looking at them for all that long.

She’s one of these “I’m daft me” types.

I know there are some exceptions where decorations are put up for different reasons like someone with a terminal illness, a family celebrating early before someone emigrates etc. but those are rare so I’m not factoring then into my thoughts around this.

Am I being unreasonable for thinking that someone who put Christmas decorations up at the end of Oct/early Nov is attention-seeking?

This thread has inspired me to put my Christmas decorations up today purely to piss off people who hate them going up early.

Thanks Op!

Do you hear yourself? Please stop putting words on people's mouths.

I haven't done anything except remind you of the words that came out if yours when you claimed not to be making moral judgements about putting up Christmas decorations. Find something reasonable to get moralistic about because this is ridiculous.

I can't make out if you're being deliberately obtuse or not.
Either way you are rude and aggressive and I'm not addressing anymore of your strange posts.

PlacematsandCoasters · 13/11/2022 15:32

Sorry but all those saying it doesn’t affect others when people decorate are wrong. I don’t want to be coming home from work in early November, in the dark to see your gaudy bright white flashing led lights and 10ft inflatable santas in your front garden.

We are firmly in the Christmas buildup starts around the first/second week of December camp. If you want your trees up inside then that’s up to you but I don’t want to see stuff crammed in to a front garden. No one should be ripping stuff down on Boxing Day, the days in between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day are the best bit, lazing around eating your weight in leftovers is the best bit.

As for the I need the space for all the toys brigade, are you the ones with social media posts of your present mountains?

I’m aware I sound like a pompous, judgemental snob but people really do need to relearn that joy is in the anticipation and waiting for gratification is a skill that needs to return.

I'm not the one making a moral issue out of Christmas decorations and blaming early decorators for mental health crises.

Ok for all those people talking about how its no one business and they can do what they want for themselves....what about outside lights and decorations?
You're sitting inside your house, you can't see them. Who are they for? Who has to look at them? Not you. Literally everyone else.
Putting shite up outside your house is not to make you happy, is it? It's not not affetcing others.

By this logic, I should have to run my clothes and makeup past you to check you like them before I go outside.

If you hate the neighbours' decorations, practise the ancient art of looking at something else.

Yeah, you got me. Damn, and I was trying so hard to sound like a total party girl.

But at least I'm not the kind of person who thinks when you stick your lights on is a sign of your moral character.

This - 100% I read last year of someone who took their decorations down straight after lunch on Christmas DAY!

I also have no problem in principle with people putting decorations up early as it does brighten up the darkest time of year, but the dark and gloom doesn't suddenly stop in the first week of January. What used to be a festival that ran from 24 December until 6 January has shifted backwards and is now perceived as running from early-mid November until 26 December. Instant gratification, quickly bored. It's such a shame that the centuries-old tradition of the 12 Days of Christmas, with the season traditionally continuing for the first few days in January, has been lost by a slavish adherence to what's happening in the shops.

Well I’m going old fashioned up Christmas Eve down 6th of January no tinsel baubles just holly berries garlands and a beautiful snow capped tree . I can’t wait advent calendar 24 piece nativity set I love it and it makes December for me. After 6th January I’ll use rose gold lights to get me through the first three months. Also a couple of treats end of January to celebrate it’s gone (I hate January).

Northernboymum · 13/11/2022 17:34

I think it’s each to their own I’m afraid; I’ve got a very excited 5 year old therefore we have some of our decs up (wreath on the door and a few bits and bobs out) I can’t imagine even thinking about wha the neighbours are doing or when they put theirs up. Maybe you hve too much time on your hands……

MNMH · 13/11/2022 17:39

To quote Marge Simpson: "This isn't to my taste, so I think no one else should enjoy it."

Littlechinagirl · 13/11/2022 17:45

Who cares? Let her get on with it.

It's judgey posts like this that then make people feel conscious of ever doing anything. Has it really impacted your life that much?! Wow.

donttellmehesalive · 13/11/2022 17:45

I've always thought they were just people who really loved Christmas and the whole run up to it more than the day itself, so they wanted to extend that lovely time of twinkly lights and anticipation.

It's weird how some people only see the bad in other people I think.

Totally agree with you and with the poster you quoted. The twelve days of Christmas seems to have turned into the two months of Christmas, starting at the end of October and finishing at midnight on Christmas day.
Sad really. The whole sense of tradition is going and it's just all about flashing lights and 'cheering up November' for some people.

I love the run up to Christmas but in the 70s or earlier I was a 70s child happiest Christmas meant after half term in November we started practicing the natively advent we had candles each week (on a Friday so the whole school did it lots went home at the weekend I never did) decorations went up the last week at school loved it so going back to those time frames for the happy memories.

What's it to you what Christmas or even November are to other people?

You were complaining earlier about early decorations being responsible for others who find Christmas sad and difficult. Now you're complaining that people who do it because they find this time sad and difficult are trying to cheer up November?

How can you enjoy anything at all when you're so invested in how other people do it?

Yes it was lovely and made Christmas feel really special. It was like suddenly there were Christmas trees in everyone's window.
Now it's just a drip drip from Halloween on and the impact isn't the same.

Though I’m food shopping frozen stuff and buying special friend presents no decorations until Christmas Eve must get Tudor advent music though for December got the Christmas music all ready.

Sennelier1 · 13/11/2022 18:26

(I'm in Belgium) We have Sinterklaas bringing toys and sweets for children who have been good. It' s a big and very important feast on the 6th of december. A lot of people prefere for everything christmassy to stay out of sight untill Sint and his helpers have left for their home in Spain. The 7th of december really is early enough to start christmas, no? I think every holiday has his time and place, so please try and enjoy them one by one?

Christmas is celebrated differently by many people and it isn’t a religious celebration for many, our Christmas focuses more on its pagan roots.

I don't think its pagan roots involved beginning the celebrations in early November.

I didn’t say it did, I said is that everyone celebrates Christmas in their own way and for some that means putting the decorations up early.
