Seen a comic in the last few days. Was fairly good although I did notice he made reference to dwarfism? It is acceptable now? Is it even funny?

What was the joke / reference?

mamabear715 · 10/11/2022 18:28

I don't think I'd appreciate it.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 10/11/2022 18:28

I wouldn't be offended but I would think it was a bit cheap/tacky/dated. Jokes about characteristics belong in the 1970s with those absolutely shit routines about women drivers and so on.

JudithHarper · 10/11/2022 18:28

I would not be offended.

NewNameNov · 10/11/2022 18:29

Depends totally on the joke and the context.

EuripidesEumenides · 10/11/2022 18:29

Depends on the joke really.

WildOats5678 · 10/11/2022 18:32

Comedy is subjective what is offensive to you is not to someone else. Comedy shouldn’t be censored.

Rockingcloggs · 10/11/2022 18:34

I don't find anything with regards to comedy offensive. Offence has to be taken not given in my opinion and if there is a type of comedy I don't like then instead of being offended by it, I just won't watch it/listen to it again.

dottypotter · 10/11/2022 18:36

How does he or she know there isn't a dwarf in the audience?
Why the need to take the mick ?

Saucery · 10/11/2022 18:37

I wouldn’t be offended but I wouldn’t choose to listen to that comedian’s material again.
There was a repeat of a One Foot In The Grave the other night which had a joke about dwarfism and that struck me as unacceptable. Of its time, but shouldn’t be part of the re-runs imo.

Choconut · 10/11/2022 18:37

Yes I would, disabled people have enough difficulties without being made the butt of comedians jokes. And I'm definitely not one of those people who are just looking to be offended, just the mum of a disabled child.

CruCru · 10/11/2022 18:39

I’d need to hear it before I decided. It’s a bit of a weird target as there aren’t many people with dwarfish these days.

Thinkbiglittleone · 10/11/2022 18:40

It would depend on the joke.

I do think that it's lazy/ dated comedy picking out things about other peoples characteristics, there are so many great comedians now who Just don't have to do that.

BasiliskStare · 10/11/2022 18:41

I think most jokes need to be heard in context to judge.

AnApparitionQuipped · 10/11/2022 18:42

I would feel uncomfortable.

7Worfs · 10/11/2022 18:42

No topic should be off limits. The only requirement is to be funny

IntentionalError · 10/11/2022 18:43

No.

Comedy should have a bit of edge and it should be able to challenge social taboos. Free speech is currently under threat in a way I haven’t seen before in my lifetime and society has become far too intolerant of anything outside of a tiny, rigidly policed set of opinions.

MultiTulip · 10/11/2022 18:43

I can’t imagine a context where it wouldn’t be offensive tbh. And it also sounds dull and the kind of dated ‘humour’ I’d find awful.

How on earth would we know?

You were there, was it funny?

Obviously what’s funny to one person is not to all.

I think like with most comedy depends on the joke and the context. Impossible for us to say

How is making jokes about dwarfism breaking social taboos?

DrWhitWho · 10/11/2022 18:44

No

But then again I have a dark sense of humour, more Frankie Boyle than Russel Howard

pinkhousesarebest · 10/11/2022 18:52

I’d be appalled by that. I have a little pupil with dwarfism and she never fails to amaze me. I am angry just thinking about it. How lazy would you need to be to use this as content?

tillytoodles1 · 10/11/2022 18:57

The only one I've ever heard was the bloke saying "I'm not Happy" and the other one said "which one are you then?". But that was years ago and it was funny for its time.

I’m amazed you can be appalled at something you’ve never heard.

There's no context or anything, she literally just said they made reference to dwarfism

I’ve laughed at Ricky Gervais:Jimmy Carr etc jokes about rape/paedophillia and god knows what else do I find these things appalling? Well yes of course, are the jokes still funny? Yes

Context is everything

TheSomersetGimp · 10/11/2022 18:59

Depends what the joke was. No comedy should be off limits.
