Would you be offended if a comedian made a joke about dwarfism?

Seen a comic in the last few days. Was fairly good although I did notice he made reference to dwarfism? It is acceptable now? Is it even funny?

That’s kind of you! You and you family can joke about it but it’s forbidden outside of your circle? Hypocrite

You need to save your puff for blowing your porridge.

C1N1C · 10/11/2022 20:49

Why be offended in someone else's behalf? Let them decide.

I don't listen to chicken jokes and get offended on the chicken's behalf...

Pumperthepumper · 10/11/2022 20:41

How is that hypocritical?

She can laugh at jokes about dwarfism but it’s offensive if others do.

So i met with my friend last week we both have severly autiistic boys who are nearing puberty ,both boys like to be naked ,we were both laughing at the absurdity of the situation and trying to ensure.we enable our boys to keep their under wear on at least to preserve their dignity
Whilst we could both empathise ,im not sure i would find it funny if a commdian made a joke about our situation so the greater public could laugh .

I was, as it goes. Did you bully people as a child, and that’s why you have such weird ideas on what constitutes good comedy? People who are weird looking or different are somehow funny to you? How small minded and childish you must be. I really thought people grew out of stupidly snorting at others for being different before they left primary school.

Pinkbonbon · 10/11/2022 20:53

Depends on the joke.
Have you heard the billy connoly sketch about the dwarf woman on the bus? That one was fine imo.

People can usually laugh at themselves.
I don't much like jokes that take the piss out of my religion or sex for example. But if they're actually funny then I take it in the spirit it is intended. Humour.

And if I don't like it, I change the channel.

As expected

and nope, didn’t bully anyone.

Its odd a grown adult can’t grasp that humour is subjective, and depending on context some things will be funny whereas normally they’re not.

I wouldn’t see a kid with DS walking down the street and think they’re funny, or laugh, but a well timed and contextually amusing joke about said child? Sure

I suppose there’s different types of humour for different people. I prefer clever, witty jokes using social observation. You like somebody laughing at people who have ‘weird features.’ Different strokes.

Two of my children are affected by dwarfism.
Offended ?
No.
I'm way, way beyond that.

I'm going to take physical revenge, and the hell with the consequences.

Just this once, every slur, every bit of shit that's come my kids way, is going to be acted out: as a massive slap round the head.

Hallionflossie · 10/11/2022 21:01

My brilliant, funny, clever, thoughtful friend has achondroplasia and has had loads of abuse over the years. She was once surrounded by teenage boys on a Saturday in the city centre, screaming in her face ‘Where’s Snow White’, nobody intervened and she was very shaken. So that joke upthread reminded me of that incident. She has been threatened by girls but was with friends that time. On the other hand she is often patronised, patted on the head, lifted up by strangers. It’s like she should stay at home because she’s different. I hope Ellie Simmonds’ appearance on Strictly helps reduce the idea that’s it’s ok to be abusive to someone because of their appearance, by raising visibility of difference.
I don’t understand how people think it’s ok to mock this condition, this attitude is the thin edge of the wedge.

No, she can laugh with her nephew, knowing the boundaries and limitations of the humour. That’s absolutely nothing like random strangers laughing at him.

If she wants to laugh at dwarfism along with her nephew then she’s a hypocrite for telling others who do it that it’s offensive. Practice what you preach or stop preaching.

The breathtaking arrogance of stating those outside of her circle are wrong to laugh but those within are fine to do so.

randomusername02 · 10/11/2022 21:07

Actually don't care what comedy people find offensive. People are free to find whatever they want offensive. As long as they are not trying to censor it and stop everyone else enjoying it. If the comedian isn't funny, they'll soon die off from lack of an audience. Censorship needs to fuck the fuck off when it comes to comedy.

I’ve explained to you why it’s different to laugh with someone you know well, respecting the boundaries of that humour, and to laugh at a stranger for their disability. It’s not that difficult.

‘Breathtaking arrogance’ is quite a dramatic way to refer to family in-jokes.

I don’t need you to explain anything to me, thanks. She’s a hypocrite no matter how you dress it up. Either it’s offensive or it’s not.

The breathtaking arrogance I referred to was stating she is allowed to do what others cannot. Nothing to do with family ‘jokes’.

VBF · 10/11/2022 21:16

Depends on the comedian and the joke. If I was seeing Jimmy Carr for instance I would expect offensive jokes such as this and in that context would not be offended. If it was meant to be a very PG setting or family friendly comedian then I would likely be more offended as it doesn't work in the context; like others have mentioned context is key here!

I think you do need it explained to you, because you really don’t seem to understand.

Do you say exactly the same things to your kids as you do to all kids you meet?

@Pumperthepumper

then there’s the Autism, the Tourette’s, the Epilepsy, the dyslexia, the benign essential tremor, the ovarian cancer and the breast cancer to name but a few of the other conditions we find humor in amongst family.

Its a laugh a minute when we’re all together.

Thankfully.

FiveMins · 10/11/2022 21:19

Ild think they are unable to think of anything funny so have resorted to being a cunt in an attempt to shock. Quite dated and not a good comic.

itsgettingweird · 10/11/2022 21:19

I feel uncomfortable with humour that targets people with disabilities. It is one thing for people with a particular disability to joke about it amongst themselves; that's not the same as an 'outsider' targeting that community with jokes.

I see what you're saying. And I do think context is key.

However my ds and his disabled peers actually quite like it when they aren't forgotten as a group and included in comedy.

Laughing with people rather than at them is definitely what you have to master though.

I certainly don’t tell my kids that we are ok to make offensive comments but others aren’t, no.

There’s a huge difference between someone disagreeing with you and them not understanding what you are saying. You need to learn it.
