To think this was inappropriate work attire?

Dc’s school (not my place of work).

One of the teachers (year 1) was wearing a very short skirt and tights. The skirt barely covered her backside.

Nothing wrong with the outfit for outside of work, or a different work environment but something about it just seemed wrong in a primary school.

AIBU to think this isn’t really suitable for the classroom?

Teachers wonder why they aren't respected as professionals. Then they come to work wearing miniskirts.

No. This one did. Why are you extrapolating that to all primary teachers? I don't know any that wear short skirts. The vast majority wear trousers in my experience. It's the most practical and comfortable option.

Teachers wonder why they aren't respected as professionals. Then they come to work wearing miniskirts. Parents say it isn't professional. Teachers say it's none of the parents business what they wear.

Enough with the generalising.

@BellePeppa
'...I find myself keep coming back'?
Hmm, it's 'I' not 'myself'.
I wish people would use "myself' and "yourself' in the correct context.

I wish people wouldn't try and put people down based on their spelling.
Cringe

onlythreenow · 10/11/2022 00:33

What's the difference between a short skirt and tights, and leggings and a top, which plenty of women seem to wear without causing others to have an attack of the vapours.

For all those banging on about knickers, maybe learn to read. The teacher was wearing TIGHTS, so unless they were sheer what is the proble? As for male teachers wearing suits - I'm not in the UK but I haven't seen a teacher in a suit since I was at school, many, many, decades ago, and then it was probably just the head.

This takes me back to the 70s when the local small town vicar's wife was judged for wearing short skirts.

The leggings that look like tights are also not professional attire for a teacher. When people can see the outline of a bum crack (and worse, sometimes camel toe) you are not professionally dressed in any seeing, never mind a school.

Seeing=setting

The leggings people wear with a top are generally not the same leggings as worn to a gym! I have a pair of leggings myself, and I can assure you they show neither the outline of a bum crack, nor camel toe. Both of which, incidentally, can be seen with some trousers.

Yet this is not the case in this thread,

So much attention paid on this thread to imaginary situations featuring female teachers' private parts. Prurient and deeply unpleasant.

HerReputationMadeItDifficultToProceed · 10/11/2022 00:50

I consider 80+ denier tights to basically be trousers. As long as her bum was covered I think it's fine.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/11/2022 01:20

I’m a child of the late 80s, we had male teachers who wore chino shorts. It was never an issue, I didn’t realise it could have been? What’s wrong with shorts? We wore skirts and shorts too?

I'm a bit older than you, and we never had male teachers wear any kind of shorts; however, chino shorts are very different from the aforementioned 'extremely short shorts', being usually loose and knee length.

We did see some male 'fashions' (usually considered ill-advised and sometimes seen as deliberately creepy) where very short shorts were popular - talking about ones that just about covered the bottom but didn't extend at all down the leg - but you would never have seen them worn by school teachers, office workers or any other kind of person required/wanting to project a professional image.

sashh · 10/11/2022 01:53

I started school around 1970. My first school picture the teacher is wearing a min skirt and white kinky boots.

onanotherday · 10/11/2022 02:54

30 years ago as a young teacher we had book day..I dressed up as a school girl...in hindsight I was a bit St Trinity's...my Headteacher suggested I didn't go to the school gate at home time .🤣

I didn't take long for the job to age me!!

If the teacher is covered up (just) I would be more concerned about the quality of her teaching.

ClaryFairchild · 10/11/2022 03:27

Very inappropriate. Given that rules students have to adhere to teachers should dress appropriately too.

Our work has a casual dress work policy, but that it has to be appropriate. Rule of thumb is that you can't see up it or down it. So no overly short bottoms and no low cut or revealing tops.

phishy · 10/11/2022 03:31

Why were you looking at her arse, OP?

echt · 10/11/2022 03:57

Teachers are employees, and their relationship with school is different, so saying students have a uniform is not a reason for teachers to dress in a particular manner. Sensible dress codes never use this as justification.

luxxlisbon · 10/11/2022 06:37

I couldn’t imagine not respecting someone because of their skirt. Seriously, that says more about you.

FallSpringing · 10/11/2022 07:44

At least she doesn't have any tattoos! That's usually causes the most pearl clutching on MN where teachers are concerned😂

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/11/2022 07:57

200degrees · 10/11/2022 00:18

yuck - which thong wearer hurt you for you to post such nonsense?

it’s not possible for “any passer-by” to see through someone’s clothing and detect their underwear. The skirt might be mini length, but it would still cover the thong by virtue of being a layer of clothing sitting over the underwear. You seem to have a weird complex here and I hope you seek therapy and get help x

I see thongs through trousers all the time. Material is so thin these days it’s really see through. I don’t know looks worse, sartorially, the outline of briefs or a thong.

Doorpalms · 09/11/2022 23:01

None of the male teachers at my primary wear suits. No-one wears suits anymore expect politicians and estate agents

They don’t at standard primary schools. But if it’s a private school where the uniform is very formal with blazers and hats the teacher is going to look silly in much less formal clothes.

at secondary when all the children are effectively in formal attire, with shirts, ties and blazers I think it’s pretty poor if teachers come in wearing overly casual clothes.

KimberleyClark · 10/11/2022 08:13

If barely arse covering minis are ok for a teacher or anyone else in a workplace then hot pants should also be ok, no?

etulosba · 10/11/2022 08:18

I’m a bit older but can remember one teacher at primary school who wore mini skirts/dresses and kinky boots.

bellabasset · 10/11/2022 08:19

I think it's probably more practical to wear trousers when working with young dcs. Often when you see older dcs walking to school they all look very smart in their blazers and uniforms so I think them seeing teachers wearing more formal wear is appropriate. Our local primary school was under special measures a few years ago but within 2 years a new head teacher had turned it round and she managed to do it without upsetting the parents. The school is now outstanding.

Needlesandsafetypins · 10/11/2022 08:21

Inappropriate IMO

WinterLobelia · 10/11/2022 08:23

I don't have much of an opinion on the teacher's clothes in the OP.

But at our private school (which goes from prep right through) male teachers are required to wear suits and ties and the women must wear a jacket and a button up shirt. This is the UK. The official description in the handbook is 'formal business attire must be worn'. Maybe i am old fashioned but I like that. The children wear blazers and ties and the teachers model the same.

ChickinBell · 10/11/2022 08:25

You should dress practically when you work in a school . A mini skirt is not practical when you have to bend over desks etc
All the schools I've worked at have had a dress code
