To think this was inappropriate work attire?

Dc’s school (not my place of work).

One of the teachers (year 1) was wearing a very short skirt and tights. The skirt barely covered her backside.

Nothing wrong with the outfit for outside of work, or a different work environment but something about it just seemed wrong in a primary school.

AIBU to think this isn’t really suitable for the classroom?

Any dress code for staff would never use the word modest.

Now I think of it, the dress code at my last school did not discriminate between men and women in its requirements.

There are a couple of ‘inappropriate’threads going tonight. Both are really odd ?

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 09/11/2022 21:56

Having worked as a primary school teacher, can’t say I’d find that the easiest outfit! You need one of the Popsy clothing dresses and big pockets! Not tights that snag and tear and a skirt like a scarf. Also - very cold if you’re on playground duty.

Yep. Noticed this.

Possibly a reaction to the ancient zombie threads being rumbled.

If you want your child to continue have a qualified teacher, you'd better stop judging and questioning their every choice.

TheMoth · 09/11/2022 22:05

I'm on the older side of teaching and it was drilled into us that you didn't show cleavage/midriff/ shoulders/too much leg. But maybe that's because I'm secondary. I'm tall, so it's always been difficult. As a student teacher, I got a bollocking for wearing a top which rode up when I wrote on the board once.

Being tall, you tend to look like you show a lot of leg, even in a decent length skirt, but it tends to be the very short teachers who tend to wear v short, arse skimming skirts, which I don't get. Surely it's easier to find a skirt that fits properly if you don't have over a foot of thigh to cover.

Crumpleton · 09/11/2022 22:13

That's pretty much the length of the skirts that are part of the uniform at our local secondary school.

Lindengericht · 09/11/2022 22:14

Another teacher here. I wouldn't wear it but I also wouldn't bare my shoulders or show off my midriff.
I always wear cycling shorts under dresses because I am quite physical and never want to worry about limitations due to my clothes. Plus I am a toy it at heart who hates dresses, but I wear some to work to mix it up.
I do always wear trousers/shorts and a tshirt though. I am very casual in my dress for work, although entirely decent.

Whatever happened to professional standards? No wonder everything is going to shit

If they want teachers to dress professionally, maybe they should pay a professional wage appropriate for people with postgraduate qualifications.

Rosebel · 09/11/2022 22:17

I can remember DDs teachers wearing quite short skirts with tights, can't say it bothered me.
When I was doing training at a school in 1998 I can remember being told skirts must be knee length because the older boys might be turned on by it. This was a primary school so it seemed a bit OTT.

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 22:18

I judge women on their abilities not their attire. Suggest you give it a shot

What does this even mean?

Hankunamatata · 09/11/2022 22:19

My sons fav primary teacher wears polo, trackies and trainers to school. Some parents eye roll. I think it's massively practical for dealing with small snotty people

Artygirlghost · 09/11/2022 22:20

This is a school and a work environment, you are not in a nightclub or on a date.

So of course wearing a skirt that short, tights or not, is never appropriate.

I really don't get the ''none of your business'' comment.

The point is people should have enough common sense to dress in a professional manner when at work and when looking after and educating children.

Feysriana · 09/11/2022 22:20

Yanbu.

Doorpalms · 09/11/2022 22:20

I’m surprised by the answers, it’s standard for workplaces to have a dress code that includes wearing skirts of a modest length. Nothing to do with it being a primary school but short skirts aren’t very professional for any workplace

pray, young mistress what would you deem to be modest? Would it be the ankle length of the Victorian era or a latter judgement?

SammyScrounge · 09/11/2022 22:21

LoisLane22 · 09/11/2022 21:18

YANBU. I'm a teacher and I think looking professional should be a given. Short skirts at bum level aren't professional, tights or not.

Exactly. Tiny skirts are hopeless if you have to stretch up or bend down and you look like an idiot constantly tugging at your skirt to keep the hem covering your knickers.
You just won't

SammyScrounge · 09/11/2022 22:23

You won't be taken seriously if you behave like that.

Jalepenojello · 09/11/2022 22:26

No idea about dress codes as I am not a teacher….but as a parent I wouldn’t notice or care and would go as far to say that I think in most cases, any parent judging a teachers style is baffling and frankly ridiculous

littleworld187 · 09/11/2022 22:31

So we're saying it's okay for a teacher to wear a short skirt with their arse hanging out but not okay for students

Glad we got that cleared up

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/11/2022 22:33

I bet not one of the people on here suggesting that the teacher is being slut-shamed and even turning it back on to OP for 'looking at another woman's bum' as if she's some kind of perv would say nothing and pretend not to even notice if a male teacher turned up in extremely short shorts. To be honest, I'll bet plenty would quibble his level of professionalism even if he wore knee-length shorts or pedal pushers.

ducksdeluxe · 09/11/2022 22:35

YANBU. Unprofessional in a working environment (and I would have thought, highly impractical when dealing with small snotty people!).

SisterAgatha · 09/11/2022 22:36

short skirts aren’t very professional for any workplace

I had a couple of little minis I used to wear for work. Not tight but short and fitted. I remember saying to both male and female bosses - is this ok as I don’t want to be breaking any kind of dress code (yes we had one).

Female boss said ok with tights (I would ALWAYS have worn tights) and male boss said skirts should be as short as humanly possible. A lady in HR complimented me on it several times. So professionally there is some leeway too! Depends on how crappy the organisation is.

For a teacher who will be bending over I am surprised shes comfortable in it.

Byelaws · 09/11/2022 22:36

surreygirl1987 · 09/11/2022 20:55

Why do you think this is an issue?

This.

MysteryBelle · 09/11/2022 22:37

Not practical nor professional to wear skirt that short, there’s bending and kneeling down etc. why would she want to wear it, that’s the question.

Never understood having to cover the shoulders though, what is the logic behind that.
