Will make any difference to anything other than giving the dosh to Qatar and Qatari business.

It made no difference to human rights abuses when we had the Olympics in China so why does anyone expect this to be any different?

What human rights abuses are there in Qatar? Genuinely didn't realise?!

You may find the answers you're looking for here.

Um

I don't think anyone has issues with different beliefs but the human rights violations... I

But you’re happy using Chinese goods even though their human rights are abysmal and they ethnically cleansing the Uyghur people?

Hypocrisy much.

So all the taking the knee and kick it out posturing over the years is shown to be a completely hollow gesture as soon as money is involved.

What’s your issue with taking the knee against racism? Why is this an issue for black players to solve?

phishy · 09/11/2022 08:11

Krakinou · 09/11/2022 07:45

The footballers should refuse to go. Happy to wear rainbow armbands or kneel during the national anthem or whatever other virtue signaling is currently in fashion, but at the end of the day, money trumps moral integrity.

Again, why is this issue a black players to solve?

People in Qatar have different beliefs and a different culture, but surely they can still host sporting events?

Right so murdering gay people and treating women like second class citizens is fine as long as its their culture is it?

OoooohMatron · 09/11/2022 08:14

ThunderMoo · 08/11/2022 23:09

The whole thing is pointless and why are they having it in the winter

I think because the heat in summer would be unbearable. I might be wrong.

No its shit. They shouldn't host if they hate people.

Maybe England shouldn’t host it either as there is still monkey noises being made at black players in English football stadiums.

queenofarles · 09/11/2022 08:21

One report I read said it was 6,500, but this varies in other reports. Apparently many were "natural deaths" which seems questionable given that the vast majority are likely to be healthy young men. There will also be many workers injured, some severely, and the issue of living conditions and wage abuse.
that report doesn’t say the deaths are all linked to building the stadiums , the numbers given by the embassies of these workers < India , Pakistan, Nepal , Bangladesh > don’t say anything , they just gave the figures over a period of 11 years , it could be a mix of many things like illness , road accidents, the numbers of road deaths in GCC countries are very high sadly , lots of reckless drivers.

but isn’t this the case too with places like primark? Shein, Mango ? Appalling working conditions yet people have no problem buying there products .

And sometimes those differences go beyond what I think acceptable

I wouldn't meddle in their affairs but I would do nothing that supports them- nothing that gives them money or status

Colacoco · 09/11/2022 08:23

In terms of players dropping out its har when it's only every 4 years.
Its widely accepted most players get 2 world cups, maybe 3 if they are lucky in their career

It's a big thing to pass up on

Not to mention that our actions in the developed countries are one of the leading causes of the devastating floods in Pakistan.

The same argument was used by sporting organisations with regards to apartheid in South Africa.

ThunderMoo · 09/11/2022 07:46

Do the players have to play? Can't they drop out?

Yes they could. But as said above money trumps morality and principles.

What’s your issue with taking the knee against racism? Why is this an issue for black players to solve?

Why is pointing out the rampant hypocrisy from the game having a problem with the fight against racism.

Armbands and taking knees don't cost money. Missing the world Cup in a state where human rights are deeply questionable but will cost them? Book the flights.

See the difference?

queenofarles · 09/11/2022 08:29

a very openly guy fashion influencer who I follow just came back from there after participating in a fashion event, Another famous openly gay art adviser works with their museum authorities and promotes their work, no idea who said they hate gays , it’s thriving with closeted men and and women .

from what I’ve seen there , Women are paid higher than men, and usually hold higher degrees than Men.

The decision to take part in the World Cup is made by the FA (a bunch of mainly white men)

The decision to take the knee against racism is made by mainly black players who don’t have a say in which tournaments England can perform in.

See the difference?

Stop making this a problem for black players to solve.

Do you know much about Qatar? The Qataris themselves don’t do any manual labour. It’s all by foreign workers who are almost slaves. The UAE is similar. The roads are literally paved with misery and blood. No one should be going to that part of the world.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 09/11/2022 08:37

Yes, people don't have an issue with buying from companies with awful manufacturing practices and people buy Chinese made products - these people are also more likely to not have a problem with the World Cup being held in Qatar.

There are also people that have a major problem with all of the above and strive not to use said companies or products (the latter of which is pretty much impossible - "sorry doc, could you use a different CT scanner please, I believe that one uses Chinese manufactured components").

You can't dismiss the concerns and protests of people against the Qatar/World Cup issue just because you assume that their "standing up for human rights" credentials don't reach your accepted level.

phishy · 09/11/2022 08:20

I'd agree with that.

OoooohMatron · 09/11/2022 08:48

By a few dickheads. The majority of English football fans don't find this acceptable and those being openly racist are banned.

OoooohMatron · 09/11/2022 08:49

Trainbear · 09/11/2022 08:30

Whether it's religion or culture it's still abhorrent.

Is it supposed to be "making a difference"?
