To be furious at DH for giving DD2 coffee?

chldev · 06/11/2022 11:47

DD2 turned 2 just over a week ago. We also had a 3yo and I'm 7 months pregnant. DH went to Starbucks and got himself a coffee, I came down stairs and he was giving DD2 a drink of it. I'm already exhausted due to this pregnancy, DD2 is now running around and it's safe to say she won't nap. DH doesn't seem to think it's an issue and that I'm BU to be furious.

when my dd was aged between 2-5 before her official asthma diagnosis we were told to give a shot of coffee as treatment to open the airways if we couldn't access her puffer or were out without it. It worked amazingly, there are a few studies on thst

“For kids, there are a lot of potential health implications of caffeine,” says pediatric endocrinologist Roy Kim, MD. So many, in fact, that the American Academy of Pediatrics says there’s currently no proven safe dose of caffeine for children.

Dr. Kim explains what you need to know about kids and caffeine, including what it can do and how much is safe.

@chldev YANBU

There's no proven safe dose of Haribo or carrot sticks for children, either. Because it's not the sort of study that would get past an Ethics Board.

Three is a common age for naps to be summarily dropped, usually just when you want them to still be napping the most. Seeing her take a sip of milk, sugar, flavouring, squirty cream, more syrup and then maybe a few atoms of caffeine is not proof that today is anything other than a day where she isn't napping just yet.

You are soon going to have three children under four. You will have to trust your DH to look after some of them or you will be on your knees with exhaustion.
I would also recommend contraception for at least a year to let your body recover from so many unspaced pregnancies, and restock your iron and calcium reserves.

thelobsterquadrille · 06/11/2022 13:29

Goodness me, it's fine.

StopsWalkingToSneeze · 06/11/2022 13:31

Was it a milky latte or cappuccino? Or was it a double shot espresso? One drink of coffee, once, is not the end of the world. But the Whittard advertising on the MN thread is ironic.

I would not be happy if someone gave my 2 year old coffee. It’s not appropriate. Would everyone be ok if he gave them a sip of wine? It’s a stimulant and a child’s body (let alone a toddler) has a lot less tolerance than an adults, meaning a small amount will have a much greater impact on them.

Theskyisfallingdown · 06/11/2022 13:35

How little parenting does he do? Ditching his kids all day every Sunday sounds deadbeat territory. He chose to have child after child with incredibly small age gaps, so he needs to parent.

I think you are overreacting too but it's easily done when you are exhausted and heavily pregnant.

Absolutely this.

Will you get a few hours to yourself later when he's back from football?

Arayes · 06/11/2022 13:37

It's Starbucks, its weak pissy brown water. Unclench, it couldn't possibly matter less.

rwalker · 06/11/2022 13:37

Unclench
tbh she probably won’t sleep there’ll be tension and you sound wound up
kids pick-up on this

girlmom21 · 06/11/2022 13:37

YABU I think. Take the kids to the park if she has too much energy. She'll be dropping naps soon anyway.

Avalovelace · 06/11/2022 13:41

I’d be more cross at the waste of money on an expensive coffee on a 2yr old. Babyccino (spelling?) next time.

It was DH's coffee. Not the child's.

Noting is more of a waste than spending a couple of quid on some foam. A 2 year old size drink of coffee is pennies

pinkpotatoez · 06/11/2022 14:13

A sip of coffee is probably not the reason your child is refusing to nap. YABU😂

userxx · 06/11/2022 14:15

I was drinking coffee out of a beaker, did me no harm.

orangeisthenewpuce · 06/11/2022 14:15

The sip of coffee is not the reason they are running around. Honestly. It's not a big deal.

maplesaucewithbacon · 06/11/2022 14:23

Coffee is not appropriate for an older child let alone a 2yo! And yes it probably is why the child is as high as a kite now because many children react strongly to caffeine in coca-cola and have to be allowed very controlled amounts or none at all when they go to parties. Or coffee in this case.

OP YANBU.

Got2besoon · 06/11/2022 14:25

My 3yo loves to help make my coffee and always has a cheeky sip after.
Non issue to me

Dartmoorcheffy · 06/11/2022 14:46

My mum would give me tea and coffee from that age and I was never hyperactive or unable to nap. Sugar never affected me either.

FatAntelope · 06/11/2022 14:49

I'd also be furious too. People have different reactions to caffeine so it is entirely possible that it a sip would effect his energy levels.

ProFannyTea · 06/11/2022 14:52

chldev · 06/11/2022 12:20

It was a drink of it not just a sip. He can't have her as he's going to play football this afternoon as he does every Sunday. So therefore I have to look after DD2 that wont nap and try and make sure she doesn't wake up DD1.

So first a sip, now a drink. Without drip feeding or pulling teeth, how much is a drink? Half a cup? The whole cup?

To be fair the OP described it as a drink in her first post. The 'sip' has come from PPs.

liveforsummer · 06/11/2022 14:57

I used sip as that's all 2 year olds tend to do from cups. I can't imagine he was glugging down mouthfuls

BeanieTeen · 06/11/2022 14:57

I doubt that had you not seen it or known about it you would be non the wiser due to your daughter’s behaviour now - it’s most likely all in your head. I do think it’s a bit daft to give a two year old coffee - but it does sound like you haven’t actually tried to put her down for a nap yet, and you’ve just observed her ‘running around’ (is that so unusual?) so you are being a bit over dramatic.
