To give people second hand gifts

GADDay · 06/11/2022 09:31

Please be honest. Is this a really crap thing to do.

The gifts are good quality, in exceptional condition and if bought new, would cost £100's.

I would prefer to receive repurposed or second hand. So a bit biased.

What's wrong with second hand clothes @ArseInTheCoOpWindow doesn't your washing machine clean your clothes?

What did you do with your kids old baby clothes? Throw them away presumably?

We are going to try and buy nothing new in 2023 for a whole year.

What does this mean? How can you not buy anything new for a year?

She means, other than food and toiletries etc.

So if she needs/wants a new mobile phone, a new coat, a bookshelf, a picture frame, a bicycle, new crockery etc she'll get it second hand.

My Nana would reuse knitted jumpers, by unravelling them and reknitting into something needed. So let's say I grew out of my two winter cardigans she would unravel them, and make a new bigger one with the wool, and maybe a new hat with the remainder. Or she'd buy a man's jumper from a jumble sale, unravel it and make it into another item, as it would only cost her (for example) 25p instead of the £3 for each ball of wool

No l gave some away and sent the rest to charity.

im not bothered about kids clothes, but l just feel uncomfortable in 2nd hand clothes or shoes. Even if they’re washed. I don’t know why.

YABVU. This is really poor manners.

It absolutely isn't.

theruffles · 07/11/2022 11:23

I wouldn't mind being given something second hand. I much prefer if things can be re-used and if it will save a bit of money for the person purchasing the gift.

I've got my kids a few second hand presents for Christmas from Vinted and charity shops, at less than a third of the original price and they're all in lovely condition. It's nice to be able to reuse things instead of always buying new.

Why would you give them away to people/charity if second hand clothes are "🤢"

00100001 · 07/11/2022 11:46

It's interesting that some people think second hand is ok for their kids, but not for them personally.

I wonder what is magically different about a t-shirt size 8years to a t-shirt sized 8.

Hmmm

Don’t be a snidey cunt
There's absolutely no need to address someone like this. It's disgusting.

You think it’s disgusting and there was no need for it. I think there most definitely was a need for it and I don’t think it’s disgusting.

JaneJeffer · 07/11/2022 13:49

You may think it but you're wrong @Sn0tnose

Sn0tnose · 07/11/2022 13:54

@JaneJeffer Your opinion is not fact. It’s my opinion that if someone implies that I’m a sneering twat because I have what I freely admit is an irrational disgust of second hand items, then asking them not to be a snidey cunt is a perfectly rational response. Again, not fact, but I’m going with it.

That crosses a line. You'll be lucky to not get that deleted by admin.

MN are pretty hands off with all the petulant little scraps that are everywhere at the moment, and fuck knows we all swear here, but you need to check yourself here: abusive name calling is abusive name calling.

Yeah, I’m surprised it’s still there to be honest. I normally bite my tongue rather than resort to insults. I’m sure it has been reported a dozen times over and it’ll be deleted shortly. But I definitely won’t be apologising. If you behave like a snidey cunt, then you can hardly be surprised when someone points it out to you.

Sn0tnose · 07/11/2022 14:25

Also, I’m pretty sure that ‘sneering twat’ is also abusive name calling. It’s just not quite enough to give anyone an attack of the vapours.

No vapours here. Adults calling each other names at all is a bit pathetic, but there is a sliding scale, obv.

That said, Christ knows I've wanted to call a few people names here over the last few days, I've almost bitten through my tongue. 😬

Because people can make their own choice about what to do with them.

I just don’t like wearing them. I don’t care what anyone else does

JaneJeffer · 07/11/2022 14:47

But @LegoHeels if someone would throw a perfectly readable book in the bin it's obvious they have a phobia. It must be very debilitating. You'd never be able to eat out or stay in a hotel or do anything where someone else had used any items previously.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 07/11/2022 14:58

If they are unopened, unused and within their 'best before' date (e.g. perfume), why not?

snowgal · 07/11/2022 15:01

I would much prefer this. We're doing a family £50 Secret Santa this year, and were allowed to put forward suggestions of things we'd like, rather than buying any old rubbish. I'd be delighted if my gift was secondhand 😊

JaneJeffer · 07/11/2022 15:11

Just on another thread about wrapping paper. Wonder how everyone feels about a new gift wrapped in old paper or a reused gift bag?

We reuse wrapping paper all the time – tied with a ribbon not sealed with sellotape. Eventually you get it back! It’s run to recognise past paper. A friend does lovely wrappings with vintage silk scarves or fabric remnants, which then becomes part of the gift. I’m all for it.

Nearly everyone I know reuses gift wrap these days, or uses stamped brown parcel paper at least.

To me, matchy matchy wrapped gifts with ribbons, tags and foil-encrusted paper seem a bit tone deaf and passé now, tbh.

Similar to the silk scarves above, one friend wraps with linen tea towels and garden string - it looks lovely.
