Guardian reporting that the rcn strike has resulted in a yes vote and we'll be striking before Christmas.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/nov/05/nurses-across-uk-vote-to-strike-in-first-ever-national-action?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

Patient's emergency care will be protected but it's a strike vote

Yes

Justanotherlurker · 05/11/2022 21:21

As the NHS is a monopoly in nursing employment, they dont have much choice. It's either strike for better pay or quit the profession. I'm not sure how succesful it will be though.

Pay them more or lessen their workload and reduce their hours. Everytime I've been to hospital the nurses have been little gems in the shit that is the NHS. (which is a whole other conversation that one side of the discussion treats it as blasphemy)

Yes 100%. It's shocking that nurses have been through the COVID pandemic and now are relying on food-banks or giving up their vocation to work at Aldi for better money. Nurses and all hospital staff should be on a decent wage.

Nursing is a profession not a vocation. It requires degree educated specific skill sets making modern nursing a profession and should be treated as such

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 05/11/2022 21:25

Yes, 100%

Of course I do but money is being taken from both these budgets to give Scottish nurses an "improved" offer. Taking money away from these services will have a detrimental effect on what they can offer patients.
I just want to be sure that the public will carry on supporting us when they realise that that is how nurses in England will get an improved offer by taking money away from other ares in the NHS the money pot is finite.

Blondewithredlips · 05/11/2022 21:28

Yes absolutely. Nurses do a fantastic job. They need to be paid what they are worth. Deep respect for nurses.
I hope the whole country support nurses and give the government a nasty shock.

StoneofDestiny · 05/11/2022 21:29

People have short memories - it was public service workers who had to keep working through the pandemic at great personal risk - nurses, teachers, police and prison officers amongst them ...........yes these are the ones people are most terrified of striking (police I believe aren't allowed to strike).

Vinorosso74 · 05/11/2022 21:29

Yes, they deserve better.

Kitesk · 05/11/2022 21:31

@lolalouisa84 really in the NHS? I'm utterly shocked. I'm on the temp band 3 rate (due to the potential strike too). My day rate is something like £10.88 currently. I have heard nurses say they can't afford to work as a HCA but some HCA say they take home more than a Sister! I guess it's varies on nights and weekend input also.

There's no way I would uptake nursing I've been doing my role 10 years plus and it's nit enough money.

Notwashingup · 05/11/2022 21:33

@lolalouisa84 sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. Yes, absolutely a profession and should be paid better.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 05/11/2022 21:33

Yes I do.

tiredwardsister · 05/11/2022 21:34

Can I just say its not just nurses who need a decent pay rise, domestics ward clerks etc who are essential to the smooth running of a ward and who often increasingly go above and beyond doing stuff that is definitely not in their job description due to lack to of nursing staff are only on band 2 which is only just over the minimum wage.

I took home more top of band 2 HCA contracted nights than as an NQN on a mostly days rota for preceptorship, after 3 years of degree level study. Go figure.

Yes. Night enhancements. But my HCA role was much less stress and i didnt have my pin on the line on a daily basis by being put in unsafe positions due to staffing and management decisions. The responsibility increase should be acknowledged in pay scales

Oh sorry i know it wasnt meant in offence. The vocation title is one used by government to justify the treatment of nurses when its simply outdated. Nursing is no longer a vocation x

Worriedddd · 05/11/2022 21:38

I work in the private sector , much more pay better ratio of patients to be honest in complex care. I would love to work in the NHS but the pay is rubbish..

tiredwardsister · 05/11/2022 21:39

I think nursing probably is a vocation but vocation doesn't have to = poor pay.

Not now its degree. A vocation is a calling. A profession requires education for specific skill sets. Nursing is absolutely a progressive now.

goodbyestranger · 05/11/2022 21:41

Yes

verdantverdure · 05/11/2022 21:42

Yes.

pompomdaisy · 05/11/2022 21:44

Yes. The government has simply left no alternative. They are on their knees. I'm a nurse but work in education and support them. It's a desperate measure for desperate times.

Shouldawouldacoulda30 · 05/11/2022 21:44

I am a RN and I sadly would not recommend nursing to anyone as a profession.
Money is rubbish considering the responsibility and accountability we have ,lack of respect from the General Public the unsociable hours we work! This doesn’t also consider the emotional side of our job, looking after very sick patients and supporting their relatives ! Dealing with dead bodies that belong to a family that are very distressed..I have nightmares about that ,It’s bloody awful TBH and we deserve the same financial compensation that any other professional person expects ie solicitor, accountant, lawyer and so I could go on !

LouLou198 · 05/11/2022 21:44

@Kitesk I'm a top band 5, hourly rate £15.86 before any tax/NI/pension deductions.
