Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

Mexican is not a culture imho that has historically been oppressed and ridiculed by white Europeans. Mexican culture is a fusion of Spanish and Native American culture due to Spanish colonisation and the Spanish empire.

A friend of mine has an annual NYE party with a food & fancy dress theme. One year it was Chinese, they served Chinese food and worn traditional Chinese costumes. Another year it was Indian, same idea. Maybe this year is Mexican??? Dunno. We don't get invited as, firstly, there's only a dozen or so of them (so more like a dinner party) and, secondly, we live at the other end of the country. I'll let you know this year's theme when I see the pics on Facebook!

I'll say that, when I've seen the past pics, it's crossed my mind that some people could take offence but, honestly, I think my friend would be mortified at the suggestion. I think they're just having a fun evening with lovely food and drink and I think people should calm down tbh.

You do know that 1/3rd of Mexicans are “white people”? Why do you keep insisting that Mexican is a race?

What third would that be?

I live in Mexico and we do not have those types of classifications for a start. There is a small percentage of wealthy people who are generally lighter skinned and have more European blood.

Thats in response to posters making this a Mexican vs. White people thing. Millions of Mexicans are white people.

There's also the German Mennonites of the North - there's only about 100,000 of them, though.

No you don’t use those terms, but doesn’t change the fact that insofar as the internationally recognised categories of races go, you have white, black, Asian, Native American & mixed race just like the rest of the Americas.

Please don't apply that racist term to Mexico. There are all shades of skin colour in Mexico, but nearly everyone born in Mexico is of mixed descent.
