Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

There's also the German Mennonites of the North - there's only about 100,000 of them, though.

1/3rd is a vast overestimation imo.

So the descendents of Spanish colonists don’t count?

Discovereads · 05/11/2022 14:57

Didn’t say that white supremacy doesn’t exist, just that the piece quoted from Maria Garcia isn’t directed to all white people, but white Americans because they’re the ones that committed atrocities against Mexican people during a bloody war only 200yrs ago in which civilians were targeted and murdered.

No British person has ever oppressed a Mexican person.

Garcia said - "an entitled grabbing of the cultural symbols of others...."

the sentiment is the same

VinoDino · 05/11/2022 15:44

@Arayes so far you've dished out - terminally stupid, half a brain cell, IQ of an avocado, white boy. You are up there with the people you are getting angry about.

Have a shot of tequila and calm yourself down.

ElFusilado · 05/11/2022 15:44

I'll be happy to answer your question just as soon as you answer mine, miss.

Georgeskitchen · 05/11/2022 15:44

Christ on a 3 wheeler bike can someone just ring Mexico and ask them if they would be offended?
Put us out of our misery ffs!!

Guiltycat · 05/11/2022 15:45

Who are you calling miss, white boy?

What does his race have to do with it?

It's always slightly breath-taking to witness the venom and hypocrisy of those who believe every single thought they have or express is virtuous.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/11/2022 15:45

What's your favourite place you visited in LatAm, miss?

I can't speak for @Arayes but mine is Nicaragua. I'll be in another country in the region in a few months, so that preference might change. How many countries do I have to have to qualify for an opinion? If I know (for example) El Salvadorans who think this kind of opinion makes you a twat, does that hold any weight? They get lumped in and get pissed off so I think so.

And I've lived all over the world and seen many 'ex-pats' (I'm an immigrant personally!) with very xenophobic opinions about the countries they live in.

And 'miss'? Yuk.

Scianel · 05/11/2022 15:45

@ElFusilado great post. I'm absolutely gobsmacked by the patronising offense being taken on this thread. It's White Saviourism at it's finest and it's patronising as hell.

Doubtmyself · 05/11/2022 15:46

AnyRandomName · 05/11/2022 15:01

@Doubtmyself

Who said that it was white people dressing up? Would it be different if the people at the party were not white, or if they just wore the hats but not the moustaches?

Personally I find the enforced dressing up in stereotypes in poor taste, but wouldn't find it racist. I'd wear a hat but not a moustache. I'm not white English if that matters.

I'm from a country that is often used for themes, we have clearly defined food, clothes, music and language. I don't mind people of any colour or background dressing up and having a party themed around my country and heritage.

To respond to the OP why don't you tell your friends you don't feel comfortable with the dressing up and otherwise attend if you're happy to. I'm sure half the attendees won't want to dress up for a number of reasons.

Of fucking course it wouldn't make a difference, if they were black or Asian.

Secondly what you find personally non-racist is your subjective opinion. Kemi Badenoch doesn't believe white supremacy exists, most social academics , never mind black people like me, think she's a fucking lunatic.

Discovereads · 05/11/2022 15:46

Coyoacan · 05/11/2022 15:41

@Discovereads

Please don't apply that racist term to Mexico. There are all shades of skin colour in Mexico, but nearly everyone born in Mexico is of mixed descent.

What racist term?

Most white people are of mixed descent.

I'm not angry. Only dished out where deserved.....

This thread is full of people who can't find the racism when its staring them in the face. Isn't it widely known in the 21st century that you don't use peoples culture as a costume? Isn't it obvious? Or are you all having blackface parties all the time?

Scianel · 05/11/2022 15:47

Who are you calling miss, white boy?

If people are going to have shit fits about calling young women girls, it's probably best if you don't call grown men boys?

JudgeJ · 05/11/2022 15:47

pastabakeonaplate · 05/11/2022 13:38

That's not how it works.

Because their opinions, the Mexicans, wouldn't count unless they agreed!

Scianel · 05/11/2022 15:47

Or are you all having blackface parties all the time?

Who needs blackface when it's all womanface these days.

Calling black and brown people "white saviours" while pretending black/yellow/brownface is ok....and YOU are gobsmacked?

What call the embassy?

ElFusilado · 05/11/2022 15:48

The descendants of the Spanish colonists mixed heavily with the indigenous population, thus making the majority of Mexico's population mestizo.

As the other poster stated - like in most of Latin America - there is a wealthy white(r) elite, though they may be descended from conquistadores, they are usually descendants of more recent immigrants from Europe or the Near East. An example would be Carlos Slim.

I think everything is fine except the mustaches

I agree with this

VinoDino · 05/11/2022 15:49

@Arayes from the person who just said 'white boy'.

Elvira2000 · 05/11/2022 15:49

It sort of things always descends into one side being theoretically more sensitive and aware, yet far more comfortable calling people stupid (or thick or delighting in agressive metaphors for stupidity). Under the impression that they superior for being more tolerant. (I would classify that as unintelligent and hypocritical.)

These are just opinions. And fashionable opinions at that. Nothing more. The idea of certain fancy dress being unacceptable has been changing over the past couple of decades. In my opinion (for what it's worth), is that you can choose to accept that view or not. A choice. It's not absolute like it's wrong to take another's life.

The rudeness/aggression of some people thinking that they are morally superior over fancy dress. To my mind, it is the total opposite of the message of thinking it is unacceptable to dress up as the cartoon version of a mexican man because it may upset someone or continue a false upsetting view.

JudgeJ · 05/11/2022 15:47

Of course it would count. Just you don't have to do an opinion poll

@Arayes from the person who just said 'white boy'.

Yes, to a fella who turned up to tell us all we were wrong, his authority being that he is a White English Man. What do you want me to call him...lord and master?

JudgeJ · 05/11/2022 15:50

TattoedLady · 05/11/2022 14:24

Same.

Bet if it was an Irish-themed NYE party and everyone had to dress up as ginger leprechauns, saying 'begorrah' and 'top o de mornin to ya' not one single person who's called out this party as stereotyping or tone-deaf would give a toss!

Damn, does that mean my NYE kilt is verboten too? Can we still serve bratwurst though?
