Mexican-themed NYE party - racist, right?

BobLobla · 05/11/2022 13:20

Just been invited by very good friends to their NYE party which promises to have a Mexican theme and everyone must wear a long droopy moustache and a sombrero. Already I am cringing as I think this is pretty racist. Don't think I’ll go… but do I say something privately to my friends about the fact that this seems really off? Do I just dip out and not say anything to avoid awkwardness?

It's not a satire, and you have to have the IQ of an avocado to think it is.

There is a huge difference between being personally offended by something and knowing it is in itself offensive.

Wearing a droppy moustache and a sombrero is the same as wearing blackface or a Native American headress. It's not ok, and most people know that. Small children can explain it to you as seem confused.

Eating ceviche is not the same as dressing up as a stereotype of a nationality. Surprised a grown woman would have to be told that.

Native American headdresses have religious significance, I don't think they'd appreciate being compared to a mere item of clothing.

Would drawing a mono brow not be racist though?

Plenty of white women have monobrows.

Well obviously but some people like to clutch at straws and might say it's mocking women with dark body hair.

Scianel · 05/11/2022 17:02

waves
Mind you that early 2000s trend for overwaxing killed my monobrow. No more Frieda!

It's not the same thing at all because you are comparing White British and Mexican as the same. There is a long historical context to why as a white person you need to be more sensitive.

Woah woah woah. Did you just categorise all white people as one homogeneous group?? That's very racist and offensive of you.

Haffiana · 05/11/2022 17:10

So many people on this thread openly appropriating the offense of another race.

The irony is completely lost on them.

MangyInseam · 05/11/2022 17:16

I just want to point out to whomever said it was ok for Mike Myers to spoof his own people that he is Canadian. And has quite good North American teeth.

No one ever has Canadian parties.

Go as a scouser. Big curly wig and mossy. Fit right in. I'm from Liverpool I won't be offended

But 'scouse' culture is really nth generation Irish is it not and the subject of cheap jibes and stereotypes.

On the basis that GBBO got a lot of criticism for their stereotypical Mexican-themed week I would say, yes, it is a bit racist. I think Top Gear have also been criticised for this.

But if you decide to go I suggest you dress as Frida Kahlo.

Top gear used to regularly dance on the line of racism with how they would word statements.

Sorry, but you can't be racist towards white people. Racism requires historical oppression, otherwise it is just be prejudicial.

Winterfires · 05/11/2022 17:26

We have themed nights but go for the related food, drink and decorations etc but not outfits.

That would be the definition of racism as per sociology,
Not the definition of racism on an individual level.

We might, we are working our way around the globe.

No more than putting on a white beard and pretending to be Santa.

SO let me get this straight.

A reality TV cooking show did a Mexican skit, there was an article and lots of annoymous interent people commented on the article (who said they were Mexican) said they didn't think it was offensive, and therefore this is white people telling (I assume a certain type or subsection of white people) telling 'people' they should be offended, where 'people' are non-white people like me?

OK.....fuck me

What? That doesn't even make sense. It's anyone's right to be offended at people dressing up in their traditional dress. It's frustrating when people dictate what others should be offended at. Which is very common nowadays, usually coming from white westerners. Which is what this thread reeks of. Bore off with your nitpicking, find someone else to be pointlesslessly angry at.

Squeezita · 05/11/2022 17:31

Georgeskitchen · 05/11/2022 13:37

Have you asked any Mexicans if they would be offended? Are there any Mexicans invited?

Not that simple. I have often had to pretend to laugh off things that white people have said to me. We’r expected to be good sports.

I can honestly say in my entire life, I've never had to rely on a white person to tell me what I find offensive, neither have any of my black friends and family.

Christ on a 3 wheeler bike can someone just ring Mexico and ask them if they would be offended?
Put us out of our misery ffs!!

@Georgeskitchen, my DH is Mexican. I told him about this thread and to him this is 100% cultural appropriation.

Yet still there are a thousand comments above saying how subject of above post is offensive to Mexicans, and it would be ridiculous to assume everyone who says so is mexican

How ridiculous, of course you can be racist towards white people.
And even by your definition, what about Irish people... have they not been historically oppressed as expressed by a previous PP?

OMG12 · 05/11/2022 17:56

Christ alive. At this point I hope the human race becomes extinct soon!

anyone here dress up as a witch over halloween? Let their kids dress up as a wizard for fancy dress? What about the angel in the school nativity play? All white dresses and wings (nothing like angels in the bible)?

anyone watching drag race?

you know what it’s fun, the one good thing about the world crises it might stop people being offended all the fucking time.

Thousands???

If you're saying only Mexicans can call out if something is offensive, by that logic only women can call out sexism. A man cannot.

By that same logic, if one group of women stand up and say they don't find something repugnant and misogynistic, then its OK ?

Obviously not literally a thousand. Don't be so pedantic.

Well that depends on the comment obviously. If someone is being aggressively misogynistic, it would be likely be obviously offensive with not much of a grey area. But would it not be pretty icky of a man to tell you, "you MUST be offended on behalf of all your friends who took their husbands last names" due to the history behind the tradition, or "your dad wanted to walk you down the aisle? I'm disgusted for you, how vile of him." I'd be a little miffed if someone told me what I should and shouldn't be offended by.

If someone said something obscenely racist its fair to be offended and stand up to it. To wear ones traditional dress would not necessarily cause offence to many people from said culture/country, therefore the same person being told to be offended by it also seems icky.

Yeah this. ^ It's fucking irksome, ridiculous and laughable all at the same time!

And don't even get me STARTED on 'moustaches are offensive and racist.' WTAF?! 😂

Is it OK to go to a party dressed as a "French person" in stripy top, moustache, onions round neck and beret?

Asking for a friend*

*OK, this is my planned costume for my friend's Europe themed party. But now I am doubting myself based on this thread.
