Whatsapp has now provided an update whereby users can hide their 'online' status. This is honestly brilliant and a long time coming.

I have just breathed an audible sigh of relief knowing that being seen online won't cause issues for me in the future now.

What does this mean though for cheating spouses and partners who were caught out, in part, because they were seen online at odd hours or only ever online when they were locked in the bathroom? Interesting one...

Plays right into the hands of philanderers doesn't it...

But I must say my conscience would still be clear in all the circumstances you mention. I feel perfectly at liberty to prioritise my time and attention as I see fit. I've never yet lost a friend, shirked a parental duty or failed to do my bit for a school fundraising activity.

I'm also the sort of person who thinks it's ok to let a call go to voicemail if I don't fancy talking right that minute. Zero guilt!

The reason you did not see it until now is certainly not because it was set to 'hidden' as that was not a function of the app until now.

Those of you who are adamant this isn't new, are incorrect. Prior to this recent update, there was the 'last seen', and 'read receipts' under 'privacy'. Only very recently has 'online' been added, meaning you can opt out of being shown as 'online' has when you are using the app. There is more info and explanation on the World Wide Web, for any doubters.

You might want to check the date on that article - 9th August. It hasn't been around for years, but it has been available for nearly 3 months.

My phone has done this for years. Not only does it not say when my last seen was but also doesn't show me as online when I am.

No no, that is when it was introduced. It has only been rolled out across the board this week. Believe me, I and others have been waiting for the update and checking every other day.

It is new.

@isitanoaktree This has been an option for beta testers for years so please don't be so quick to declare everybody else wrong. I've worked with smartphone software since 2011 and for developers, this was an option since 2012. Known as 'stealth mode'
