Whatsapp has now provided an update whereby users can hide their 'online' status. This is honestly brilliant and a long time coming.

I have just breathed an audible sigh of relief knowing that being seen online won't cause issues for me in the future now.

What does this mean though for cheating spouses and partners who were caught out, in part, because they were seen online at odd hours or only ever online when they were locked in the bathroom? Interesting one...

Plays right into the hands of philanderers doesn't it...

What's to share? I just give zero fucks simple as, nothing to bottle and share. And I'm not married to a scummy lowlife who uses setting on WA to hide their dodginess. We live an authentic life, wastes zero emotional energy.

please try it sometime.

It must be amazing to live such a perfect life.

Some people have good reason for wanting to use the new feature. If it's of no use to you, then so be it. You come across as very pompous though.

'Last seen' is a time stamp, and shows when you were last seen online. So for example 'last seen 10.16am'.

'Online' status shows when the person is online there and then, under their name, and changes to 'typing' when they are typing a message.

So for instance, if I am writing a message to you @Rowthe then anyone else who I also whatsapp can see that I am online and essentially wonder who I am writing to, why I have time to write to others and not them if I have not replied to their message, or whether I am cheating on you as my status is constantly online in the small hours or when I am supposed to be otherwise busy, like at work.

I know what you're talking about OP! It is new and like you, I am thrilled and wonder why it took whatsapp so long to do this!!! I can now reply to messages in whichever order I choose and not have someone send me a msg coz they see me online expecting a convo when I just popped in briefly to respond to a more pressing msg.

Honestly does nobody on here know how to use WhatsApp? I honestly despair. Its one of the most straightforward apps to navigate, and I say this as someone that isn't hugely tech savvy myself.

I haven't a clue how to use it because I've never even looked at it. Not sure why that would make you despair.

IlIlI · 05/11/2022 10:25

I am so happy about this. I love it. No more blue ticks, no last seen, and now no online. I did sometimes just reply via notification bar so I wouldn't be online but that wasn't possible on all phones as far as I know? And wasn't great for longer conversations or long messages.
Yes, game changer for cheats, but also for everybody else.

IlIlI · 05/11/2022 10:25

And yes, it is new, in most recent update

ferneytorro · 05/11/2022 10:28

Conversely or perversely , I hope they don't do it on FB messenger as I want to be able to see if my mother has ben online as that way I know she is alive without having to constantly check in by phone or driving round. Although she wouldn't know how to change the settings I suppose when i think about it.

CarefreeMe · 05/11/2022 10:32

The only people I can think of for having good reason for this is the people in controlling relationships, but I doubt they’d be allowed to use it anyway.

I genuinely am struggling to understand why people would want this apart from those who have boundary issues.

And if that’s the case then I think it’s a bad thing as they need to learn to work on their boundaries more, not find a way around them.

Yes, there's something a bit sad about the OP thinking that the less-frequent users is something to despair at when it's OP who has anxiety about using it...

I do enjoy my life thanks, and one things for sure I don't go on Fb or WA regaling everyone with details. I have no need to.

I've only alluded to my life on here being stress-free without social media and free of the imprisonment caused by the use of software functionality aka "WhatsApp induced anxiety" because I find it totally ridiculous and very easy to resolve, but people want to be lemmings and follow the herd. Their choice.

As always, people only want to read stories of people's misery, if anyone says they are having a happy life, it's pompous. Whatever.

If you can't understand it you either aren't trying or lack capacity, it's obvious that some people prefer not to be tracked online while sending messages. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that which is a perfectly reasonable thing imo

I have no boundaries issues like the option not to be announcing when I'm online.

You might want to. It's a good app for messaging. Free, even overseas. If you message people who live abroad, it's brilliant. Various other features like voice messaging as well.

@isitanoaktree ok OP clearly I and many others had mixed up ‘last seen’ with online status and thought this had been a feature for years. Maybe it’s because I’ve never wondered about or checked someone’s last seen status that I’d conflated it with online status. There’s really no need to call people idiots who are IT illiterate. I can assure you I’m neither of these things, it was just a little misunderstanding over two WhatsApp features which are similar to each other.

In general, insisting they're 'right' is a common feature of people who lack in knowledge and sophistication, which is amusing and irritating in equal measure.

If you have “WhatsApp induced anxiety” you shouldn’t be using it.

That's not really how life works. Some people are extremely anxious individuals (not me, but plenty of others). So by your logic they should simply stay indoors at all times and not engage in anything that life has to offer?!

What utter nonsense spouting from your mouth.

Benjispruce4 · 05/11/2022 09:12

@Musti it hasn’t. That was the ‘last seen’ function. Now you can set online and last seen to be ‘nobody’ can see.

Look, the fact that you conduct your life and your business with your eyes closed is immaterial to this conversation.

Why are you even on this thread?

@MistyRock If that makes you 'LMAO' you must really have a boring life, love!

As I've mentioned, I was a beta tester for many smartphone software developers when I worked for Apple. These features are tested on beta testers long before they're released. Perfectly normal procedure.

Lmao!
