Mortified… light hearted

Everybody on MN is mortified, every OP is mortified, everything is mortifying. It seems to be a cover all word for every kind of negative emotion, embarrassment, humiliateion, and even some it doesn’t mean, fear, anger. Yes, it’s quite an adaptable word, but God, it’s mortifying how often it’s written on here. If I had a pound for every time somebody wrote mortified on here I’d be a well off woman, almost as well off as the average Mumsnet user whose DH earns a six figure salary.

AIBU?

Well I'm "discusted" you would mention it.

Not fumming? That's naice then.

Westendbuoys · 04/11/2022 15:38

I'm too busy being a toxic narc to be mortified.

'Vile' gives me the rage. I know it's irrational.

Me too! It’s so misused, overused and often accompanied by “grim”.

ie “my husband made himself a cup of tea without asking me if I want one, AIBU?”
”oh that’s grim. He sounds vile tbh OP”

This thread made me spit out my tea

And wake the baby?

TheMortificadosDragon · 04/11/2022 15:57

MN used to have a whole kingdom of Mortificado.

lanthanum · 04/11/2022 15:59

The one that got me (on a different site) was when someone said they had been "literally crucified" by their boss. I wanted to ask if they had been literally resurrected as well.

Chikapu · 04/11/2022 16:00

I'm howling at these responses

ItchySnoof · 04/11/2022 16:07

No one has snapped and farted in a while either Sad

Used4tt · 04/11/2022 16:11

I don't know anything about you apart from the two sentences you've typed but I diagnose your child as having autism.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 04/11/2022 16:13

I let it all wash over me with complete equanimity. Right up to the point where someone uses the phrase "crack on", at which point I become simultaneously incandescently livid and mortified for them.

TheMortificadosDragon · 04/11/2022 16:18

Yeah, but are you the real Queen Mortificado?

Notacompetitiveundereater · 04/11/2022 16:21

It’s the screaming that gets me. I’ve been fortunate enough to never having heard someone scream. Shout yes. Even shout loudly. Scream no. Never. But on here everyone is screaming at someone.

and for some reason the word sobbing. When someone wants a flare for the dramatic they don’t say I cried, they say I’m sat here sobbing, do people sit sobbing in real life. On here it’s a regular occurrence. Screaming and sobbing.

Poppins2016 · 04/11/2022 16:26

I see your point...

On the other hand, if something was only mildly embarrassing or mildly irritating (etc), I suppose people wouldn't bother posting.

Cuppasoupmonster · 04/11/2022 16:27

ODFOD. Just old now and a bit tired.

Being ‘screamed at’ by people on the street, friends, even colleagues seems to be a common thing on here.

QueenMortificado · 04/11/2022 16:29

TheMortificadosDragon · 04/11/2022 16:18

Yeah, but are you the real Queen Mortificado?

Oh don’t start that again

lovemelongtime · 04/11/2022 16:52

junglejane66 · 04/11/2022 17:01

And everything is 'super', as in I was super busy today, or I had lunch today, it was super expensive, whats wrong with 'very'?

TinaYouFatLard · 04/11/2022 17:01

Over use of the word mortified really boils my piss.

BlackeyedGruesome · 04/11/2022 17:05

honeylulu · 04/11/2022 14:35

It's probably because they are on the spectrum or suffering from dementia, didn't you think of that?

Oí, we're notably pedantic. Say what we mean, mean what we say...apart from ds who is also autistic, oh and dd, another autistic one...

Erm... Does this count as modifying?

If the sexes were reversed then posters would be up in arms. if a man came on here saying his DW was smoking weed in front of the DC, drinking a bottle of vodka every night and that she’d gambled the family savings away, he’d be told to suck it up, and that she’s probably depressed. MN hates men.

People are also very easily ‘humiliated’. You click on a thread entitled ‘Humiliated at work’ thinking the OP was very publicly bawled out over a small mistake, or her knickers fell down in the middle of a presentation to the entire company. Then you read it and find out that all that happened was that the OP sent an email to her team and someone said she really should have CC’d Sandra from Finance.

FattyAirways · 04/11/2022 17:52

'Jesus wept' really fucks me off. Leave Jesus out of it, bitches!

FattyAirways · 04/11/2022 17:53

Oh, oh...and everything is 'bonkers'. Bonkers is a try-hard bonkers word!
