To not isolate after testing positive for covid?

LolaBlue36 · 03/11/2022 11:36

No idea what the rules are these days but I've just tested positive. Should I stay in the house or continue to go about my daily life, symptoms permitting?!

If I knew I was positive I would isolate for 5 days

But I would be highly unlikely to test in the first place

givemushypeasachance · 03/11/2022 11:41

Well it's not difficult to google 'covid guidance' now is it, that's quicker than making a mumsnet post about it! www.gov.uk/guidance/people-with-symptoms-of-a-respiratory-infection-including-covid-19

"If you have symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, and you have a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to go to work or carry out normal activities, you are advised to try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people."

"What to do if you have a positive COVID-19 test result: Try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.
If you have a positive COVID-19 test result, it is very likely that you have COVID-19 even if you do not have any symptoms. You can pass on the infection to others, even if you have no symptoms.
Many people with COVID-19 will no longer be infectious to others after 5 days. If you have a positive COVID-19 test result, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days after the day you took your test."

Peashoots · 03/11/2022 11:42

Legally and officially you don’t need to.
however, personally I would limit contact with other people at the very least. Avoid going into shops or crowded places if you can (get someone else to do your shopping or get on online order). Go for a walk if you must but avoid people, keep two metres away if possible.
that’s my personal view. There are still vulnerable people and I would hate to pass it on.
hope you feel ok and recover quickly x

MatildaTheCat · 03/11/2022 11:42

Why test if you aren’t going to act on the results? Either isolate or tell absolutely everyone you are in contact with so they can decide if they want to be in your company. Some may not care, others will.

YABVVU

poundthealarm · 03/11/2022 11:48

Officially you don't have to do anything and can go about your daily business as usual however you were concerned enough to test so there wasn't much point in testing if you're not going to at least try to limit spreading it around.

Personally I'd stay at home but that's because I'm fortunate enough to get sick pay and can easily arrange a shopping delivered

mondaytosunday · 03/11/2022 11:50

Are you coughing and sneezing? If so I would isolate. If you have no symptoms (though if that was the case you wouldn't have tested I presume), then I'd go out, not to a crowded place, with a mask.

Dotjones · 03/11/2022 11:51

It's down to the individual to decide how selfish they are as a person, legally if they don't give a damn about anyone but themselves they can carry on as normal.

user1487194234 · 03/11/2022 11:53

I would not know as I would not teso

I didn't say it was difficult to Google it... I just said I had no idea what the rules were these days...

Stay in your house.

Can't believe how selfish some people are.

You could seriously harm people.

Curiosity really... and I didn't say I wasn't going to act on the results

Thanks for asking, OP, I didn't know either, I've got a bit lost with it all. I would stay home for a few days if work allowed, because I would only test if symptomatic now anyway.

trussedchicken · 03/11/2022 11:57

Why test if you are considering not isolating anyway? Seems a bit pointless. As others have said, you don't need to isolate. But it would be better if you can, as it's known to be very contagious and you'll almost certainly pass it on to others. Whatever your views on covid, there's no denying it's unpleasant to have and it's nicer not pass it on. I had it recently and felt shocking for a few days, would rather not have it again. But it's up to you.

rainbowandglitter · 03/11/2022 11:57

I've got covid and have isolated since a positive test.

DotDotaDash · 03/11/2022 11:58

I have Covid just now and from the positive test on Sunday I have stayed over 2m from those that live with me including staying in a different room alone as much as possible. I have not been to the front door or outside as neighbours etc very chatty.

I prefer not to pass it on if I can help it and I would hope others would try not to pass on this or other illnesses where possible.

Jules912 · 03/11/2022 11:58

You don't have to do anything but guidance is 5 days from test. I did bend this slightly on my last day as I couldn't find anyone to do the school run for me, but wore a mask and tried to stand away from people.

Cherrytree77 · 03/11/2022 11:58

I would still isolate.

Its still a dangerous virus to many people.

I realise its difficult logistically for many people now so if not possible, avoid indoors/crowds etc.

NewMum0305 · 03/11/2022 11:59

What would you do if you had norovirus? Or chicken pox? The only difference is you might well feel ok with positive but the risk of passing on something that makes someone else very ill is the same.

Just because there aren’t law in place anymore doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow basic infection control advice.

QuestionableMouse · 03/11/2022 11:59

Selfish AF to expose others, especially heading into winter. It's five days, stay at home!

ihatefacemasks · 03/11/2022 12:00

If I were going to test, which I have never done, and would never do, and were positive, I would ignore it. I have no interest in what the rules are.

If I felt too ill to go to work, I would not go to work - regardless of whether I had Covid or flu or D&V or anything else at all. If I didn't feel ill, I'd go to work. Pretty much the same as I did before Covid came along.

RuthW · 03/11/2022 12:00

Legally you don't have to.

Morally you should stay at home

Mariposista · 03/11/2022 12:01

I would not have tested in the first place

Vegetablesupreme · 03/11/2022 12:05

I'd definitely isolate. Putting vulnerable people at risk would be extremely selfish. (This isn't aimed at you OP as I know you've not yet decided what to do.)
