To not isolate after testing positive for covid?

LolaBlue36 · 03/11/2022 11:36

No idea what the rules are these days but I've just tested positive. Should I stay in the house or continue to go about my daily life, symptoms permitting?!

Legally you can do what you want. Morally if you don’t isolate you’re a terrible person. Sorry, but catching covid has absolutely wrecked me despite being triple-vacced and the idea of going out and about and spreading such a horrendous thing in the knowledge I was doing so… awful.

sunnydayhereandnow · 03/11/2022 17:59

Stay at home, and if you absolutely have to go out wear a good mask and keep your distance from people.

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 18:25

@mn29 stat sick pay is nothing for first 3 days , then full week is only about £80 its not enogh

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 18:26

Also we can wfh so that makes a difference to us being able to isolate and also get full sick pay so again different options than those who can't wfh , don't get paid

I don't even get that. Nothing, zilch.
However if someone on here wants to cover my pay if I get COVID. I'll be happy to stay off work.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/11/2022 18:28

Well you could literally kill a vulnerable person so guess it depends on whether you are that selfish or not.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 03/11/2022 18:29

There is no legal requirement for you to isolate however, I tested positive last Thursday and did isolate. I think it's the right thing to do.

HangOnToYourself · 03/11/2022 18:32

MatildaTheCat · 03/11/2022 11:42

Why test if you aren’t going to act on the results? Either isolate or tell absolutely everyone you are in contact with so they can decide if they want to be in your company. Some may not care, others will.

For the drama of being able.to tell people she has "that covid" probably. And to start a thread about it.

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 18:32

@gamerchick are you self employed ? Thats why people shouldn't judge some can wfh and isolate others cannot
Some work places are telling people to come in as long as they are well
I have had a cold/ cough ( not covid) the coughs lasted over 2 weeks now , i stayed home first few days and wfh week one but after that I have been out as a cough can last weeks , no idea if im still contagious but i can't stay home for weeks , sometimes just have to use common sense

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 18:34

@stuntbubbles but what if your work tells you , that you have to go in or if you don't get paid ? Its not so easy unless your in those positions
Many people just don't test then no choice to make as we always went out with colds etc if we felt well and had to go into work , a cold can also kill a vulnerable person

HappyDays40 · 03/11/2022 18:37

I don't think it's about being selfish some people don't get paid unless they work. I know loads of zero hours people who have gone in work with COVID. Who pays the rent if they have no work.

HappyDays40 · 03/11/2022 18:39

It's easy to say don't go in if you're a nice secure job with sick pay and good terms and conditions,.

LoveMyCats1 · 03/11/2022 19:08

Not been testing. Had a cold last week so wore a mask in the office for a few days.

CarefreeMe · 03/11/2022 19:18

I try and isolate for at least 48hours if I get any sort of contagious bug like covid or norovirus.

  1. I don’t think it’s fair to spread it around.

  2. And you should rest at home if you’re ill as that’s what your body needs.

It’s crazy that we feel guilty for staying at home when we’re poorly.

I used to go into work when I was so poorly but since covid I refuse to do that.
I am fortunate enough to get paid when I’m off sick and rarely get ill.

What happens if you get covid from a colleague who came in knowing they had it, so they could get paid, but you get it at the level where you are too ill to work? Isolating for five days is costly, yes. When I caught covid I couldn’t work for five weeks. I’d much rather take the five days option.

TurquoiseBeach · 03/11/2022 20:37

'Though I know there were some people who thought everyone should be testing on the hour even if the had no symptoms of anything at all.'

Wow. I've never heard that. Who were these people suggesting everyone test on the hour?

On another note, thanks to all those on here who are willing/able to isolate and don't dramatise it as 'hiding away forever' etc. It's appreciated.

XenoBitch · 03/11/2022 20:40

I cancelled meeting anyone when I had Covid for 10 days, but I still went to shops and walked my dog. I was only unwell for the first day, so was able to carry on anyway.

AFAIK, it is only isolate for 5 days if able. Not everyone can.

Were you not on MN during Covid?

Theunamedcat · 03/11/2022 20:44

Point is if you stay at home you can lose your job might be "basic infection controls but it's also the difference between paying your mortgage and eating for some most companies tell you to come in

Frazzled2207 · 03/11/2022 20:51

Well if it was me I’d not go into the office (I mostly wfh anyway), send dh to the supermarket instead and give people a wide birth on the school run.

but I’d still go for outdoor walks etc , assuming well enough. Would def NOT shut myself away, everyone in the house has had it, most of them twice

TurquoiseBeach · 03/11/2022 20:59

@ihatefacemasks you've just tagged me, so I clearly am on mumsnet during covid!

Was it a mumsnet poster (or 'some' mumsnet posters) that suggested everyone should test on the hour then?

Pickingmyselfup · 03/11/2022 20:59

mn29 · 03/11/2022 17:30

If you’re actually unwell then you can get sick pay though? Like if you had tonsillitis or something that was making you feel too ill to go to work.

You can get SSP after X amount of days but that isn't much and not helpful when you've already lost a few days wages.

I've just lost £114, we can swallow it without too much drama but any more and it would begin to affect us.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/11/2022 21:02

Definitely isolate. You might infect someone a lot more vulnerable than you.

Pootle40 · 03/11/2022 21:05

Harebrain · 03/11/2022 13:27

I wouldn’t bother to test but would stay home if I felt ill and carry on as normal if I didn’t.

This.

ellieboolou · 03/11/2022 21:23

No I wouldn't, I wouldn't even bother testing either.
