Parking in electric bays

Blinkingheckythump · 03/11/2022 09:52

I went somewhere the other day where parking was very full, excitedly started to pull into a bay to realise it was an electric vehicle only bay. I didn't park in it and was lucky enough to get the last normal bay. But it did make me think. There was no one in any of the electric vehicle bays and every other space was then full. If you turned up after me would you have parked in the electric bay as a normal car?
Yabu no I would not
Yanbu yes I would

If you spent £££ on a Dyson hairdryer and you couldn't finish drying your hair, so you were either late to work or had to dry it with a different hairdryer, you'd be a bit pissed off...so why buy an electric vehicle with a limited range?
They're not fit for purpose.

We humans, not just MN posters NEED hydrogen technology.

We have been all over Europe with our electric car. People think you need to charge till fully charged but most tiles we charge for about 25 minutes which is about the time it takes for toilet breaks and a cup of coffee.

No disrespect intended but I find the people who say electric cars are no good haven't used them.

Upyouranty · 03/11/2022 15:21

It’s called “Icing” and is regarded as very anti social. It’s also regarded as impolite if you are an electric car owner to park in them if you are not charging.
2 measly spaces for electric cars and it’s a problem?

I have an EV and it drives me potty when people do this. Usually it’s EV owners as well, but they aren’t actually charging!

DenholmElliot11 · 03/11/2022 15:31

I park in them always because they are ususally closer to the shops for some bizzare reason. To be fair i always make sure there is still one available but I like in an area where not many people have electric cars.

Someone did try to tell me off once for parking there but as I pointed out to him, he was parking there too! He might have had an electric car but he wasn't charging it so he didn't need to park there either.

It's for charging vehicles, not parking them.

It's for charging vehicles, not parking them.

And how do people access the charger if you are parked there Confused

He was in the next space along, @madness. In the electric car space, with an electric car. Not charging it.

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 15:37

This will become a bigger issue
Where i live we have a small car park for residents that is full when they put in 4/5 electric bays then there won't be enough parking and even the couple that may own an electric vehicle by then won't need to charge all night or for hours upon end so where do we all park
EV the whole infrastructure has not been thought out at all in a country where parking is already very difficult and a small percentage have driveways

madnesss · 03/11/2022 15:38

You said you were parked in one, I was asking how people access the charger when you are parked in the space, I never mentioned the man, I can't ask him as he isn't here. I was asking you.

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 15:41

@LiquoriceAllsort2 some of can't as at home we have no driveway to charge them , thats the issue they are no good for many of us .
The infrastructure is a long way behind.
I know people being offered them as mobility cars with little choice but they don't have a private driveway to park them on to charge , just in street disabled bay

Beamur · 03/11/2022 15:41

Don't park in an EV charging bay unless you are driving an EV and charging it. It's really very simple.
Think of it instead as being like parking by a pump at a garage and just leaving your car there. You are stopping someone from being able to refuel their car. It's really selfish.

Quite true. I don't think I would own one without a drive.

Many people rubbish them without even trying and the amount of rubbish we hear on the TV is laughable.

It's true that EVs are on the scheme but nobody is having to take them. While the options are not as great as they once were there are still hundreds of cars to choose from and the EVs are very much the minority.

Phrenologistsfinger · 03/11/2022 15:51

There is a term for this - it’s called being ICED! When an Internal Combustion Engine car illegally parks in a charging space. We wouldn’t do it because we drive an EV so we know how annoying it is. Would you park at a petrol pump?

Also, key point is that many charging spots have plate recognition cameras and the owners will fine you for overstaying, even if you are charging and then stay on after you are done. We always dash back to the car to avoid this.

@LiquoriceAllsort2 nails it, 100% agree! They haven't used one or they are paid to spread disinformation (fossil fuel shills, do they exist, in the pay of OPEC? 😂)

I think you're a bit confused.

She acknowledges that she didnt follow the rules but pointed out the hypocrisy to the EV owner who felt they had the right to park in a charging spot just because they had an EV but also wasnt charging their car and decided to tell her off, that they are charging points not parking spots.

Phrenologistsfinger · 03/11/2022 16:18

@Rowthe overstaying?

It’s equally annoying (absent extenuating circumstances for a delay in returning, like a medical issue or a child’s meltdown or something). I would hope it is rarer amongst EV owners through empathy but then I am constantly surprised by CFs…

Society works best when we are all considerate of each other, whatever car we drive.

I'm not at all confused, I understood what happened. But, if PP is able to point out they are charging points to someone else, whilst parked in one, not in an EV, I am asking them how people who need to charge their cars get to them.

Hypocrisy?

pompomdaisy · 03/11/2022 16:27

My daughter has disabilities and drives an electric car. If I had discovered you had taken that bay and she was stranded and unable to use her car I would absolutely go beserk with you!

Well they obviously dont.

But her sentence that you highlighted was directed towards the guy who was telling her off.

MrKlaw · 03/11/2022 09:58

no because then if someone comes that needs to charge while you're in the shop they can't. Like you wouldn't (hopefully) park in a disabled bay if they were the only free ones left?

Don't bet on it. As a disabled driver I see people not displaying blue badges in disabled parking spaces all the time. My absolute favourite exchange was as I pulled into a space outside one of our offices, a woman pulled up next to me. I got out and she jumped out of the car and started to sprint across the road to the shops (so she shouldn't even have been in our works car park). However I "nicely" stopped her and pointed out that she'd forgotten to display her blue badge. She started arguing with me "where did it say it was a disabled space?", to which I explained it was the bloody big yellow checked box, the HUGE disabled sign on the floor under her car and the big notices in front of her car saying "Disabled bays". She then started with "didn't I know that there are such things as invisible disabilities" and I pleasantly pointed out that I did indeed know that. And that was why there are no such things as INVISIBLE BLUE BADGES, so she could display her badge now in which case I would forget that she was in a private car park, or I would go and get security who would happily clamp her car within minutes. She must have forgotten to pick up her badge when she left the house as she jumped back in the car and left the car park at speed.

ChiaraRimini · 03/11/2022 16:48

Please don't do this. As an EV driver, there are not enough charging points to go round anyway. The other day I drove to a car park in Bletchley with 10 charging points, none of which were in use according fo the app. When I got there every single space had been blocked by non EV cars! You wouldn't block the only petrol pump for miles around so don't do it to us please!
