What’s with all the trolls?

Have people gone loopy over the half term? It seems as though every halfway interesting thread has been started by a troll or derailed by a troll (or both).

What's with all the snarky replies today?

mauvemoth · 01/11/2022 16:48

This thread won't last long.

I haven't noticed anything obvious, though that might just be me as one of the threads I was on has disappeared.

mauvemoth · 01/11/2022 16:49

You're probably not allowed to say which?

CuriousCatfish · 01/11/2022 16:49

Stick a pin in Active. Trolls everywhere.

RewildingAmbridge · 01/11/2022 16:51

Honestly some of them I love. Not poo trolls or those with a clear interest in children's underwear etc, but some of them are so odd it's laughable. The M&S troll is my current favourite, but Bison troll is a close second

StrictlyJowita · 01/11/2022 16:51

I haven't noticed anything obvious,

You haven't noticed anything obvious!!! The place is absolutely nuts at the moment. I've been on Mumsnet for fifteen years and I've never seen anything like it.

What you need to do is stay on a quite boring run of the mill thread and then watch as it turns to absolute madness.

Bonus points for every alternate account you can spot being warmed up during the process, too.

I think M&S and Bison/water troll is the same person

CruCru · 01/11/2022 17:03

I haven’t encountered the M&S troll yet.

I used to sometimes run into the plimsoll troll. They were weird but not (at least obviously) a perv. They just really, really wanted children to wear plimsolls to school.

@StrictlyJowita to be fair there is one thread I've posted on under another name where the OP is a bit iffy and has been outright accused of being a troll.

There's lots of people who are obviously lying or exaggerating in their replies, in response to an OP, but that's pretty standard.

I haven't seen an M & S poster other than one who posted a while back on some daily walk for yellow stickered products.

balalake · 01/11/2022 17:12

Have other sites clamped down on trolls, or just a few who have come here? Or is it that they have stayed away from Elon Musk and Twitter perhaps?

Applesandmarshmallows · 01/11/2022 17:15

I find the water troll really interesting I mean it’s not harming anyone is it ? I think mnhq should allow them one thread

mauvemoth · 01/11/2022 17:15

I probably just post on the boring threads.

OneTC · 01/11/2022 17:20

The basis of Mumsnet is trolling. Mumsnet with no trolling is not Mumsnet.

See, I think the Harris that they waste everyone's bloody time.An obvious bison/sea Serpent thread -fine. But to start out with a plea for relationship help, or power usage help then turn that I to sea serpentshite is not OK. All the peol.e that have tried to help?

I don't think it's someone with mh problems, I think they either have a grudge against MN/women, and/or they just want to feel like they have some power or influence left.

TheSpottedZebra · 01/11/2022 17:21

The Harris? The HARM!

JenniferBarkley · 01/11/2022 17:26

I've occasionally idly thought it strange that more trolls don't pretend to be the other party.

Today has cured me of that.

I’ve just got quite into it 😂 in my mind it’s a game of thrones esque world where the ancient sea serpents use mind control on crabs and humans have to fight to survive 😂

There does seem a lot around at the moment. The water/M&S troll is just weird and tedious. I miss the plimsoll troll-not seen them for a while.

mauvemoth · 01/11/2022 17:32

I dislike the incel trolls the most. They always start out fairly innocuous.

LittleBowPeeping · 01/11/2022 17:40

I'm not sure about Trolls but I think I have sniffed out a couple of journalists looking for a story...

Jux · 01/11/2022 18:43

We used to get regular posters who were perhaps a bit bored and would start bonkers threads which were tremendous fun, and go on forever keeping everyone amused. Eventually they'd own up or be correctly identified, at which point people would be congratulating them and sometimes each other onparticularly biiant ideas or bon mots.

Then some po-faced individuals started complaining about the waste of their precious time, or the quality of info available on the thread (because lurkers might take it seriously) and so on and MN became rather sad as the more interesting and fun ones disappeared.

Still, nothing stays the same, everything grows and changes.

Drodeadledbedfedheadredsaid · 01/11/2022 19:13

Where are these troll threads what's an M&S troll? I need something interesting please direct me to a troll post thanks
