as in 200g of soup

with bread and butter etc.

that's a normal size, right?

Friend heats a tin each for her family

But most people WILL add bread and butter or a sandwich or sausage rolls etc

As PP said, that isn't 'portion' then is it. If you have to bulk it out with a sandwich or sausage roll, it is a side, not part of the main meal.

Forestdweller11 · 06/11/2022 08:11

Two servings out of a tin here. But tomato is diluted with milk and oxtail with water by about 1/3- 1/2 . Served with slice of bread cut into chunks and shoved on top.

mydogisthebest · 06/11/2022 08:24

I have always only used 1 tin between us for lunch for me and DH. We have 2 slices of toast or a warm roll with it.

Would never cross my mind to have a tin each

So then an entire tin isn't a portion then either, as people here are saying they have an entire tin with 2+ pieces of bread etc

"A whole tin and three or four slices of dry bread."

"Husband and I usually have a tin each plus 3-4 slices of bread."

So if people are having to add 400 odd calories to a tin of soup, then surely the entire tin of soup isn't enough?

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 08:48

i don’t understand why you seem to think that your half tin plus other stuff to actually fill you up must be the right way though.

It’s a meaningless concept. So judging a friend for deciding that 200ml of soup
just isn’t enough for an adult is weird. 200ml of any liquid just isn’t very much.

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 08:51

There are about 200 calories in a 400g of Heinz cream of tomato soup apparently.

100 calories is not very much. Is it?

No wonder you’re seeking to add another 300 calories worth of bread and butter to your half tin of soup.

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 08:53

Most people probably eat at least 500 calories for lunch. So the ‘serving size’ of half a ton of soup is a pretty minor part of the meal.

A whole tin with bread and butter is hardly gluttonous.

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 08:55

Half a ton of soup. 🤣

might actually fill someone up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

neurosensitive · 06/11/2022 08:59

I have the whole tin and 1 slice of bread and butter. The serving suggestion on the tin normally says 1/2 a can per person but I don't think that's enough and storing the other half to eat the next day would be a faf. I would give my daughter half a can when she was 5 or younger.

Well, some people are seeking 400 calories with their full tin... What's your point?

OP posts:
00100001 · 06/11/2022 09:02

.not saying an entire tin is gluttonous or indulgent or makes you a fatty.

I'm just remarking that I thought ½ a tin was a serving!

GawjussPreMadonna · 06/11/2022 09:20

Officially yes, half a tin (200g) is one portion. But it's a tiny portion imo. I like the smaller tins (probably about 300g but not 100% sure) as that feels like a decent size portion without being too much

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 09:21

My point is that a 200 calorie tin plus 400 calories of other stuff is only a 600 calorie meal. And that’s a totally reasonable amount of food.

the ‘serving size’ on the tin isn’t useful because it’s just about pretending the soup is less salty/sugary than it is for traffic light type reporting.

Nonicknamesleft · 06/11/2022 09:48

I have been thinking of posting on this very subject. I don't have the bread and butter but regularly have a tin of soup for my evening meal and every time, look in astonishment at the label telling me a serving is half a tin a serving? What???

Depends on the soup though. A tin of Big Soup might be considered a portion as it is chunky and comes in a larger tin. A whole tin of plain tomato soup is in no way a 'portion' for an adult imo.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2022 10:26

I seem to be the rare one that doesn’t usually have bread and butter with soup

but will have a whole tin

if having half a tin but needing bread and butter - sausage rolls / cheese rolls etx

then surely half a tin isn’t filling or enough

Kteeb1 · 06/11/2022 12:52

Why do you care? If your friend wants to eat a full can let her. Bizarre that you need to come on mumsnet to ask. I only eat tomato soup and then only when hungover or ill from not self inflicted means so would be a full can for me. Don't think I've ever shared that info with anyone before as wouldn't have thought anyone would ever want to know.

00100001 · 06/11/2022 12:55

maybe.

But a Tin of Heniz "Big Soup" is the same calories as a tin of Heinz Tomato Soup. it's the same size tin.

In fact its lower in calories.... Chicken and veg "big soup" is 200 cals, Tomato soup is 220...

So I'm not sure what your 'logic'i is there?

Why would a tin of soup that has chunky veg in it with fewer calories be considered portion, but a pureed soup with more not..?

it's all in people's heads!
They think a tin is a portion, because that's what fits into our large soup bowls these days. It's like people have an urge to fill the container, no matter the size.
This happened at work, we used to have big cereal type bowls at the soup station for a free lunch. Then they refurbished the canteen and bought new nicer crockery, which happened to have smaller bowls. People took a "full bowl" of soup and the kitchen discovered they had way too much left over than before.

@00100001 that's how mumsnet works. People ask questions and then other people comment on them. If you can't handle it maybe don't post?

Also don't think I judged you for eating what you want. In fact I said your friend can eat what she wants and by default that means you can too. Enjoy your soup.

SudocremOnEverything · 06/11/2022 13:22

so you DO think that 200 calories of soup is gluttonous.

Do you serve dinner on side plates too?

TheGoogleMum · 06/11/2022 13:33

No 1/2 a tin isn't very filling for a meal. If I did half I'd need to either be not very hungry or quite a lot of toast!

Tilia · 06/11/2022 15:20

Just to add my tuppenceworth - I would say that when eaten (let's not argue about which verb to use here) as a starter, 200ml/half a can of soup is about right (as per suggestion on the side of the tin). But as a meal, a whole can per person is likely to be appropriate. But homemade is usually nicer and less subject to volume control.
