Rough' tax rises on the way

What does this even mean? I can't take much more. Not with the rising energy prices and the absolute mess up of the mortgage interest rates rising.

How will people survive? Already we have not had pay rises and now we will all probably be taxed more.

I feel at the end of my tether. It's really affecting my mental health.

The point is. No amount of tax rises are going to avoid the tough choices coming imminently this decade. This isn't a feminist issue this is a financial and time issue. There isn't enough of both.

I don't believe this.
I ve lived in other countries with far higher tax burdens than the UK..... who manage just tickety boo.

We could mitigate (not totally prevent).... no one needs 100s of millions in the bank & there are several million in the UK with vast wealth.

It comes down to political choices... wealth taxes, reverse Brexit.. all make a huge difference.

Indeed, however, this country is not going to fundamentally change, in addition, the ticking demographic timebomb of an aging population is a global issue.
The UK quite clearly has an issue with support networks for groups. Tax will not solve the problem.

L1ttledrummergirl · - the problem with the KK and Liz Truss plans were they were going to borrow money ( vast amounts of additional debt) to pay for tax cuts. It was not that they had found the money after all the covid debt was still sitting there to be repaid.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/11/2022 12:35

My point is they pretty much doubled that debt overnight with nothing to show for it.

See this is what i don't understand... i don't know anyone who has packed Granny off to a home before she really did need to go.
I helped to look after my Mum until her stroke...my friend has pretty much given up his job to care for his mum, other friends did similar.

BUT what few do is the personal (i.e turning, lifting & toilet) & dementia care, thats 24/7 and you'd need a team of perhaps 8 people to do it (2 for every 8 hrs)

No one can expect family to do this and tbh they never really have, hence the huge geriatric wards of yesteryear.

My DD worked as a carer.... its back breaking work and the 4 x 45min max anyone gets, can only be done with some family support.

If we want more social carers, then 1: we have to pay more and 2 - open up migration routes.... Brexit decimated social care.

I've worked in social care, it's not just Brexit. Some of my fellow country people are still here, they've just upskilled, like myself. In addition, The EU is now a more attractive place to go for 3rd generation migrants, the EU is paying more. Even home has modernized somewhat.

Lastly, there's not a cat in hells chance the government nor the private sector is able to fulfill the social care needs of up to 30% of the population. It's impossible.

Are there any care tasks that can be automated?

Having watched my darling grandmother suffer with dementia for many years, I don’t really believe in keeping people alive in this state anymore. I think it should be compulsory for people to fill in a form in their early sixties stating their wishes in this regard. It isn’t necessarily being kind keeping them alive, everyone should choose for themselves.
If we had better antenatal and maternity care and extensive gene testing we would also end up with a more healthy overall population. So technology in that regard is constantly developing.
In reality, our economies rely on people still having children or immigrants coming to work here. Better education and free childcare really is a must. Kids don’t get a vote though.
The NHS is on its knees. I am going to make sure I have clear medical instructions to not medicate me beyond a certain point. I know it will be hard for my children to accept but if it is written clearly the doctors will need to follow my wishes. Many old people actually feel this way too, some of course don’t. It is high time society starts having discussions along this line. Dying in peace with some dignity is just as important as being born in a safe environment.
