People are fine with being disrespectful to Christians

At a church playgroup. The people who run it are very devout Christians. I am taken aback, by the number of parents, who thought it was appropriate to bring their kids to the church dressed for Halloween. Kids are dressed as witches, goblins, skeletons, creepy pumpkins etc..
The church holds a light party every year on Halloween and is very clear that they do not endorse Halloween.

@Eindaira
The fact that women can't be bishops, priests, and deacons is sexist on itself. As if they are not worthy enough. Can't have women getting above their station now, can we? All hail the mighty men, women shut up and go birth kids.

I think you have a wrong viewpoint.

Since God is the one who has appointed the different roles within the Church, no one can claim a right to any position within the body of Christ. This is especially the case with sacraments. No one—male or female—has a “right” to be a priest. It is not like a governmental office that anyone can apply to. It is a sacrament, and no one has a title to grace. It is an unmerited gift from Christ.

This may strike some as unfair, but realize that God has given women other gifts that he has not given to men. For example, women bring the body of Christ (souls) into the world one birth at a time.
Men do not have this privilege. Priests bring the body of Christ (Eucharist) into the world one Mass at a time—a gift reserved to them, acting in the person of Christ.

In other words - men and women are equal but they are not interchangeable.

Wow.

Kind of an odd coincidence that God told men that the privilege he gave them was to be in charge, and the privilege he gave women was to pop out babies.

deliverooyoutoo · 31/10/2022 19:38

@Ihatecocomelon I didn't see hostility towards you (I went and read the thread) but I think for me, no matter what the event churches overwhelmingly tend to use it as a recruiting mechanism. And that makes me avoid them like the plague. Sorry. They don't want me and mine and people like me anyway. Regardless of personal view, the doctrine of the church I was brought up in excludes me and mine. And any I bore.

People who are interested will come to church and if the church is a "fit" for them they will stay.

I don't know that you can do much more than be welcoming without proselytising .

What the fuck??? When and where was that??? Actual mud?

The parents of a C of E school for an outstanding primary school in EA - totally shocking 8 years ago and I was horrified.

A lot of evangelical churches around where we lived and a lot of scaring the children into believing

one family had 6 children - he was a pastor and all
home schooled - church school. Girls were all
married by 18 with babies on the way. Boys helped father after the age of 14 and again married by 18. The one child that wasn’t a Christian was told daily they were going to hell and wouldn’t be with all the lovely family in paradise - it was child abuse in my mind

We are all equal but some are more equal than others eh?

So they are basically copying Diwali?

This. Do they do a fake Seder on Passover as well?

I’m not sure it is the parents celebrating All Hallows’ Eve in the traditional way who are worshipping false idols here.

SerendipityJane · 31/10/2022 19:52

ZoeCM · 31/10/2022 15:11

@Powderandpaint - right, but Christians believe the God of the Old and New Testament are the same person. They believe Leviticus no longer applies because it's redundant and the rules changed when Jesus "fulfilled the law", not because it's morally abhorrent. They worship a God who ordered rape victims to be executed.

Several "Christians" make a Very Big Deal about obeying the Bible. To the extent of calling people who don't "unChristian"

blubberyboo · 31/10/2022 19:54

@Flymetothezoom
surely All Saints day on the 1st November is when they should be celebrating a light party to banish the darkness and evil spirits… so why have it on 31st October?

Powderandpaint · 31/10/2022 20:15

I think you know I never said that.

Yes, I read 'Animal Farm' as well 🙂

I know you are joking but there is a growing number of Christians (granted it’s mostly US) who have co-opted Jewish holidays. They think they are all a big “Judeo-Christian family” but from what I’ve seen Jewish people are mostly horrified and offended.

I have seen that in evangelical churches over here and it bothers me.

No as you and everyone else knows George Orwell said that. I wasn’t try to be clever it literally sums up what you said in a nutshell. Men and women are equal but only men get to be in power and make important decisions whilst women get to risk life and limb and excruciating pain to bring a baby into the world and arrange the flowers on Sundays. It’s so tiresome, if you believe that, then own the misogyny. Don’t try to justify it or twist it just own it.

LoveMyCats1 · 31/10/2022 20:23

Yanbu. I don't even believe in God but wouldn't be disrespectful enough to take my child dressed up to a church or a mosque.

Powderandpaint · 31/10/2022 20:27

As there are about 43,000 Christian denominations I'd be curious to know which ones you mean?

But that is pretty much what you said and it’s pretty much how Christianity views women. There to serve the man who ministers.

MacarenaMacarena · 31/10/2022 20:39

Christians can be very fluid in their definitions and interpretations. Witches etc can be fine with some and not others, yoga classes loved by some and scorned by some. When they struggle to agree definitions, like some might say, it's a broad church.

SnoozyLucy7 · 31/10/2022 20:40

Powderandpaint · 31/10/2022 18:08

@monsteramunch You certainly seem to have a bee in your bonnet over this. 🙄
Why does it matter what I think?

Anyway I've given you my answer more than once - I'm sorry it isn't the one you want.

You just keep talking about the straw man, no answers actually given.

Yoga can viewed as unChristian? Really?!

pointythings · 31/10/2022 20:43

@Powderandpaint your words: In other words - men and women are equal but they are not interchangeable.

So basically - equal but different. Where have I heard that justification before? Oh yes - Apartheid. Funny that in both cases one side ended up with all the power and the other ended up with all the pain.

ChilliBandit · 31/10/2022 20:44

@pepperminttaste oh yes, one of my relatives calls it unholy sun worshipping. Real bee in her bonnet about it

I think you misunderstand the role of the Priesthood.
The priesthood is misconstrued in terms of domination, power, and exultation; it is properly understood in terms of service, love, and sacrifice, and there are more than enough opportunities for both men and women to exercise these offices outside of the priesthood.

In actual fact Christianity did a lot to raise the status of women.

As it still does today, divorce in the ancient world left many women in dire economic and social straits. At the time of Christ, Mosaic law allowed a husband to leave his wife, but a wife could not leave her husband. Jesus’ prohibition of divorce established Christianity as the only religion in the history of the world to call its members to strict monogamy.
By establishing one moral code obligatory on men and women alike, Christianity fostered a lasting commitment of unconditional covenantal love, protecting the family structure and putting the sexes on an equal footing.

I have a devoutly Christian friend who won’t do yoga, not because she thinks it is unchristian but because she feels it’s disrespectful to appropriate the prayer traditions of another religion. I’m a practising Christian who also practises yoga and there are plenty of us.

I have never heard anyone have a problem with yoga but given that it is quite tied to a particular kind of spirituality I wouldn't find that massively surprising.

pepperminttaste · 31/10/2022 20:51

@ChilliBandit Being from deepest darkest NI, I shouldn't be surprised but that's a new one on me. Although when I read 'unholy sun worshipping' I read it in a NI accent!

I wasn’t allowed to teach yoga in our local church hall because it was in contravention of the bible.
