To think that something has to be done about the immigration crisis?

But I don't know what? More than 900 people landed in Dover today, as I discovered when reading about the terrible petrol bomb attack on a detention centre. Detention centres overcrowded, more than 7 million pounds a day being spent on hotel rooms for illegal immigrants, horrendously slow processing of applications...people drowning in the channel and local people feeling angry and frustrated because of the strain on services. Not to mention the mental health toll on people living their lives in limbo! So what is the answer? Because I just don't know anymore but it feels like the system has completely broken down.

Thousands of them have come from Albania though.

And For those who HAVE just crossed war zones etc, I would think it was far better to
make the most of the safe place you are currently than the very real risk of drowning at the last stretch - AND FOR WHAT?? That’s what I’m asking, WHAT IS IT that makes the last 22 life threatening miles worth it?

Rinoachicken · 31/10/2022 16:34

A french politician said why, we don't have an ID card system, so its easy to disappear into the black economy/cash in hand Labour market & it's easy to be whoever you want to be so you can get healthcare as well.
Then the obvious - English language, friends/family here.

This is what I was getting at in my earlier post - the UK is a criminals DREAM. It should not be.

As for the rest - considering how much LAs are having to pour into English classes, it doesn’t seem like they DO have English as a language.

If they are coming here to be with family then they can apply for a familial visa and come in legally without having to lose their life savings and their actual life in the ocean?!

I get you. It’s frustrating to see the numbers so high.

Croque I can't say I blame people for moving away from cities and towns considering what is happening to them.

Unfortunately, I can see it from the other side. I have had some truly lovely neighbours move away before school age. In general, people who will not go private move away at exactly the same point in time before their child starts Reception. They don't clearly articulate their reasons but formulate explanations around them 'There are a lot of children who don't speak English so resources would be taken away' and so on.

France has an immigrant hostile culture and is unapologetic about it. We are naturally more inclusive and welcoming. Word gets around.

Labour tried getting an ID card system in place, the Tories have had 12 years to get one too but there is huge public opposition to this.

I don't think France is any more anti migrant than the UK but it is simply very difficult to get work/health etc with such officialdom.

We sometimes laugh at EU red tape but it can come in handy, i'd love an ID system to be introduced in the UK.

Didn't the Kurdish woman who drowned recently in the channel, refused entry to live with her husband who was here legally? so she tried the legal means, didn't work, died.

Manston is inclusive and welcoming?

DearOohDear · 31/10/2022 17:45

There are hotels near me that house migrants , also Amy barracks that had millions spent on it which migrants burnt down
Locals are getting very concerned , as someone said on the local Facebook page there is the equivalent of a army of men who we know nothing about
That actually scared me as obviously they are free to roam
We have diphtheria in the area now apparently
Services and schools are on their knees, coast guard border patrol and helicopters are out a,l the time . Its worse than people are making out imo

SleeplessInEngland · 31/10/2022 17:50

Braverman is currently defending her email fiasco by saying people asking her about it are part of ‘conspiracy’ to stop her tackling the current ‘invasion’.

She really is a piece of shit.

Whizzi24 · 31/10/2022 17:53

I was listening to an immigration lawyer on Radio 4 this evening. He said that total asylum applications have only increased by a small amount but the routes of arrival have changed - now many more come by small boat. I'm not sure which routes were used more commonly before, but I do know the government stopped the family reunion scheme by which many people, especially women and children, would be resettled (and yes, there are women and children on the boats too).

He said that issues such as the overcrowding at Manston have occurred because of a very inefficient processing system which has caused massive backlogs to build up over the last 3 or 4 years.

funnymummmy · 31/10/2022 17:55

What happens when all the hotels and rental properties are full up and there is nowhere left? We already have a massive housing crisis. Where will the people already here and homeless live? It is completely unsustainable both economically and practically and socially destructive.

ilovebrie8 · 31/10/2022 17:59

@DearOohDear it’s a terrible situation and locals must be v fearful. So many are Albanians now and that has been confirmed a country that is not a war zone and other countries such as Sweden and Germany just won’t allow. It’s a mess and needs to stop somehow to stop all the illegal landings ...it is destroying some areas and taking advantage of us being a soft touch here.

SleeplessInEngland · 31/10/2022 18:04

If I cared about illegal immigration I’d be furious we have such an incompetent Home Secretary charged with sorting it out. But people who do care about it are fine with her because politics is just ‘vibes’ now. She talks tough, so that’s enough. It doesn’t actually matter that nothing improves.

Worked for Priti Patel. Until it didn’t.

Our populations have mixed views. In France, you will find that everybody is at the same end of the spectrum on the issue - right and left wing. There is very little overt calling out more of a deep seated, barely expressed disgust as if they are speaking of lesser humans.

BewareTheLibrarians · 31/10/2022 18:10

@ilovebrie8 its been pointed out a few times on the thread (which I’m guessing you haven’t read or you would have seen it) now that the increase in Albanians is because they’re being trafficked here to work in cannabis farms and prostitution. Yes, there’s not a war. But there are huge problems with government corruption allowing the trafficking gangs to operate. Also, the UK is pretty lax with cracking down on modern slavery. If they did, trafficking gangs wouldn’t be able to send victims here.

IndiGlowie · 31/10/2022 18:11

Yubgummy you talk a lot of sense . We can't take in everyone, But I don't blame people one bit for having a go if their living conditions are as bad as you say . We would do it too . They are thus economic migrants not asylum seekers .

Croque · 31/10/2022 18:13

Italy is only slightly better. I know a Muslim person who went to the Hard Rock Cafe in Florence for an evening meal, as a tourist from the UK. At the end of the meal the guy serving her table came with the bill. He then said to her " I'll just move this knife from the table, otherwise you might get up and stab everybody". This was in 2019 as well when those types of attacks were happening. She was a middle aged mum with her kids. These things don't always get reported/recorded. When I heard that Georgia Meloni was elected, I was not in the least bit surprised. However, attitudes are still mixed compared to France.

Taxes are funding hotels, Albanian aid and to border police in France so it’s not like we’re not all paying. 40k is a lot of people to deal with and the issue is growing

I hope we don’t reach Sweden type situation where people just vote in accordance with their frustrations, but I can see it happening.

PrincessofWellies · 31/10/2022 18:16

Let's just add the immigration service as another service in the UK that's broken. If they actually pulled their finger out and got on with processing the applications, they wouldn't have backlogs. Exactly the way they've continued starving the NHS and social care so people are being treated in the back of ambulances, if they're lucky enough to get one turn up.

I have immense sympathy for men, women and children who are fleeing their countries for whatever reason, but then I used to work for an immigration lawyers so I know the stories. They're horrendous.

Sweden and Italy have far right leaders now...scary thought and I could see it happening if a task force doesn’t get a grip on this now...

Croque · 31/10/2022 18:39

Today, no boats arrived because the tide was not favourable. The solution could be to use tidal wave manipulation technology to stop the boats coming in but it would impact upon some of the other channel traffic and some would attempt it anyway at even greater risk to their lives.

BewareTheLibrarians · 31/10/2022 18:43

@croque a well functioning government should be easier to arrange than tidal manipulation… It says a lot about the bunch in charge that we’d even have to consider things like that.

sst1234 · 30/10/2022 20:25

It’s attitude like yours that fosters resentment. Telling people to shut up just because you don’t agree is why we end up with issues like Brexit. The irony is astounding.

False logic totally.

We ended up with Brexit because some fools voted for it.
You no doubt included.

LaGioconda · 31/10/2022 16:07

@Rinoachicken, there is nothing that is "so appealing" about the UK. As noted upthread, we take a relatively low proportion of refugees compared with other countries.

WE ARE A SMALL ISLAND AND WE ARE FULL!!!! We do not want these illegals. We do not know who they are and by destroying their ID's, they prove their nefarious intent.
France has a land mass 2.4 times the size of ours, Germany 1.5 times, Italy 1.2 and spain 2.1 times larger.
All these are safe countries so let them go there. Germany has apparently told Albanians that they will not be accepted.

BirmaBrite · 31/10/2022 19:23

Well Suella Braverman stated in the HoC this evening that she has a plan to deal with the 'invasion'. So we can all relax and look forward to seeing a huge decrease in immigration, and a massive increase in public services in Kent. Phew !

Not sure what the various Conservative governments have been doing for the last 12 years ? Maybe immigration is only a very recent problem, so since 2018 ?
