Rather than the BTP being "woke", this is more like the Daily Fail who are jumping on the "anti-woke" bandwagon.
How relevant is it that nowhere have BTP described the person in the images as a "suspect". Their wording is "Officers believe the person in the CCTV images may have information which could help their investigation." Perhaps BTP don't have any good images of the suspect, but they do have images of this quite distinctive person taken at around the same time and want to interview them as a witness.
There have been other cases where a crime has been committed (let's say by a 6' tall man aged 30-40) and police have issued images of other people in the area at the time (let's say a group of females aged 18-25) who they would like to interview to help their investigation.
Remember Christoper Jefferies, the Bristol landlord who was vilified in the press because he "looked a bit funny" and pronounced guilty by them after the murder of Joanna Yeates. After Vincent Tabak admitted killing her and was convicted, Jefferies won damages against multiple newspapers, including the Daily Fail.
