Just Stop Oil's daily protests

CatsAreAlwaysCute · 27/10/2022 16:09

Is anyone else concerned about where these daily protests will lead us?

The public are clearly getting more and more irritated by their antics. It's only a matter of time before one of the protestors are seriously injured.

I'm also worried that the government will ban certain types of protest as a result?

If I were to throw a bucket of iced water over them, would it be classed as assault?

Can’t stand them.

fiftiesmum · 28/10/2022 20:44

I will be joining them as soon as I retire and haven't got to "behave" myself because of my job.

Good to know that you don't really care about it then.

nokidshere · 29/10/2022 18:27

I can't be doing with them. They are targeting the wrong people, they won't gain support for their cause by disrupting the average persons day. And damaging other peoples property is always wrong.

They should go and chain themselves to the railings of downing st, or glue themselves to the benches in parliament. Impact the people who can actually do something about making changes. Stopping Mrs Smith from getting her children to school or joe bloggs from attending an appointment or interview just won't cut it.

I've been listening to concerns and watching protests about climate change my whole life (I'm 61) and still nothing changes.

How the hell do you know how much I care - at the moment I am putting into practice what I think. I don't fly, I travel by train (electric) and don't use fossil fuels for heating or cooking.

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2022 18:02

How is it 'amazing'

Nothing is going to change because of it.

And I hope all those causing criminal damage get prison sentences

Because whether you agree with them or not, their cause and/or their actions, they’re everywhere. All over social media, often the topic of discussion on talk shows. Do you not think people say that about every protest? Things do change as a result of protesting.

fruktsoda · 29/10/2022 18:49

If they're foolish enough to do stupid things, I don't have a great deal of sympathy for them if they're hurt as a result. I wouldn't advocate anyone acting out against them, and anyone who commits a criminal act should face the appropriate consequences, but I won't be shedding a tear over it.

Just say you were making a protest

Dave20 · 29/10/2022 20:05

The thing is, the fat cats who make big profits for the oil companies ( Shell are global not just the UK) hardly give a shit about a few ‘eco’ warriors blocking a bridge or road in little old England.
I doubt they care nor take any notice.

Near Dartford, a woman died in a fatal crash , the ambulances were held up during to the protest on the bridge. It may have also been someone else aswell that died, a doctor ??

Its possible the outcome would have been different had the traffic not held up the ambulances.

Dave20 · 29/10/2022 20:06

Also are the police allowing the public to move the protesters on? I saw new footage of people being dragged away, I didn’t see the police stop them..
I think maybe the police secretly want the public to act?

Parmesam · 29/10/2022 20:09

Their campaign is flawed. When they affect ordinary people going about their business it lands wrongly in my opinion. I'm on a bus in London and some distance ahead these protesters block the road. I'm on a bus, I'm using carbon neutral transport, and all I want is to get to work on time. But no, these numpties are delaying me.

If they want to make an impact target the decision makers. Not car companies in Park Lane or fudging Harrods. They can go to the public gallery in the Houses of Parliament for example. They can go to COP (insert number here). They can target oil companies and banks and investment firms. Why try and target me, a low carbon user, just trying not to get the sack?

No wonder my fellow Londoners are retaliating.

Dave20 · 29/10/2022 20:13

I think the police bill was actually voted no wasn’t it?

CatsAreAlwaysCute · 29/10/2022 20:39

The police have their hands tied TBF.

They arrest the protestors immediately, and they're accused of being heavy-handed.

They give the protestors a chance to leave peacefully, and they evoke the wrath of the public.

This has proven to be untrue - ambulances weren’t blocked. Please see the link I posted earlier. Their policy is to move out of the way for emergency vehicles.

Rubbish. I was stuck in Cromwell Rd the other day. There was over a mile tailback with an ambulance behind me. There's no way it could have got though. It doesn’t take much for central London to become gridlocked and nobody moved.

Greywhippet · 29/10/2022 23:38

We will soon notice the impact of climate change on our lives. There needs to be rapid and bold change to even limit global warming. Everybody should be talking about this, everybody should be doing something about it and we all need to change the ways we think and live.
Just stop oil, extinction rebellion, whoever, I sometimes feel that they are the only ones who are awake. They are brave to be doing what they are doing. All the anger on this thread should be directed at those who are profiting from literally destroying life on earth, or those who are in a position to try to do something but aren’t, such as our politicians.
Moaning about a couple of kids in an art gallery is absurd in the face of what is going on on this planet right now

nothingcomestonothing · 29/10/2022 23:47

All the anger on this thread should be directed at those who are profiting from literally destroying life on earth, or those who are in a position to try to do something but aren’t, such as our politicians.

And if these protests were effective, it would be. Instead the protesters are alienating the public instead of targeting those who can make the changes .

crackofdoom · 30/10/2022 00:17

Are people not aware that JSO/ XR etc. are targeting Parliament, oil terminals, fossil fuel financiers in the city etc. all the time? Just the other day, when Rishi Sunak was sworn in as PM, a group of 20 or 30 protesters got into the Houses of Parliament and staged a short occupation there, to protest the Tory government's climate policies. A few months ago they were blockading oil terminals, etc.

But the fact that nobody on this thread seems to have heard of these protests might explain why they also block roads and bridges sometimes.

Pixiedust1234 · 30/10/2022 01:24

I would prefer it if they protested outside the oil companies headquarters. Even better if they were in a different country. It is a global rather than national thing after all.

Tulipomania · 30/10/2022 08:51

They do protest outside oil companies' offices!
These protests are taking place in other countries!

Tulipomania · 30/10/2022 08:53

Interesting article here looking at both sides of the argument:

BigFatLiar · 30/10/2022 09:07

everybody should be doing something about it and we all need to change the ways we think and live

We could all stop using heating at home, just wear more clothes. Gas & oil is central to our current way of life to make meaningful changes means major sacrifices. I don't know if their are any chemical engineers on here but it's so much more than cars and aircraft, it's drugs and plastics and all sorts of other things.

I'm all for change but most of these protests are just people saying do something while all the time people are doing things to make it better but it does take time meanwhile we are where we are.

Daftasabroom · 30/10/2022 09:56

@BigFatLiar I don't know if their are any chemical engineers on here

I'm an engineer working in manufacturing research. Roughly 70% (+/- 5%) of emissions come directly from burning fossil fuels for manufacturing, for electricity generation and for transportation. In a 25 year professional career I have never seen the pace of change we are going through, every project I, and thousands like me, are currently working on is in some way linked to the reduction in emissions.

It's a mammoth but doable task. (And no I don't think JSO and EI are actually adding anything positive)

Tulipomania · 30/10/2022 09:59

BigFatLiar You do know that plastics are made from oil, right?

The deaths of Lisa Webber and a GP in her 40s were caused because ambulances couldn’t get to the crash site on time because of these idiots.

There are countless more. People who have been paralysed because ambulances didn’t get to the hospital on time. Sick infants delayed to hospital.

They are murderers.

Absolutely agree.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 30/10/2022 10:18

queenofarles · 29/10/2022 09:28

I find throwing huge amount of toxic paint at shop windows and using chemical based glue quite paradoxical.

Yes, what a bunch of hypocrites.

crackofdoom · 30/10/2022 10:38

Could anyone continuing to insist that people have died due to ambulances being unable to get to them because of protests please provide some evidence that this has actually happened?

Because- as already mentioned- and linked to- upthread, the ambulance service has said that the JSO protests on the QE2 bridge DID NOT have any effect on their response time to that fatal crash.

So, if you could stop using the deaths of innocent people as cynical propaganda and misinformation that would be great, cheers.
