It makes it terribly irritating to read threads.

Please stop. Particularly when it’s a long op and you then have to scroll past it several times to read the replies.

Stop abusing the already annoying ‘quote’ feature.

Ta muchly.

Genius, @RainbowsMoonbeams !!

Please do that, MNHQ.

Their platform is not that good I shouldn't think.

Plus, not many people care.

Is there a reason MN haven’t disabled being able to quote the OP? There’s been quite a few whiny threads about it since the function was introduced.

Because not everyone wants it done and they don't want to do it?

SellingFairytales · 27/10/2022 18:57

Because not everyone wants it done and they don't want to do it?

Why? Why wouldn't anyone want it done? It doesn't make any sense to quote the OP? It's assumed you are replying to them and you can tell anyway by whst you are posting.

It makes as much sense a quoting any other post.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2022 19:01

I mean, why have you included a quote from my post? It's literally right there just before yours.

I guess so, has anyone properly asked them on all the threads? Has there ever been a reply from MNHQ?

I have a vague feeling they said "no, we don't see the point" or something along those lines but I wasn't really paying attention.

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 19:11

Here's the monthly thread on the subject from Dec 2021 where MNHQ have commented. Not enough people troubled by it.

I've used MN for the best part of two decades. I've never, ever been confused by posters replying to the op without quoting. It's painfully, stark-staring obvious they're replying to the op unless they state otherwise. Quoting the op seems like a complete and utter, irritating waste of time.

Much agreed.

Sincerely,

Forum user of 20+ years

RoomOfRequirement · 27/10/2022 19:15

Agree!

And can I also add, if you're not responding to the OP, quote the post you are! I'm sick of having threads where someone has responded with no quote, so I as OP respond and then they say 'I wasn't talking to you/your OP'. That's how threads work!

That's not quoting the OP though. And I actually did want to know why.

Because we don't care if people quote the OP.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2022 20:26

On a somewhat related note, the quote function differs on the website and the app. Lots of people don't realise it.

On the website you can have nested quotes (ie quote quoted posts).

On the app you can only quote once, ie not a previously quoted post.

On the app, you don't see nested quotes only the last quoted, so the posts look different & therefore less clear on the app. It can add to the confusion of 'who's that directed at?'

Ok

SpookyPanda · 27/10/2022 20:29

Whataretheodds · 27/10/2022 13:25

But if you want to part-quote then part-quote. (Copy/paste/bold or italics). Don't quote the whole OP!

Not everyone can do that

SoupDragon · 27/10/2022 19:00

Yes I think people should be able to quote whatever they want

midsomermurderess · 27/10/2022 20:31

I quite agree. It's witless. Unless you specify otherwise, you're replying to the opening post.
