It makes it terribly irritating to read threads.

Please stop. Particularly when it’s a long op and you then have to scroll past it several times to read the replies.

Stop abusing the already annoying ‘quote’ feature.

Ta muchly.

Stop abusing the already annoying ‘quote’ feature

I will sometimes part-quote the OP, as I have here, if I want to respond to a particular point only (often something that's been overlooked in the general trend of responses). Is that OK?

But if you want to part-quote then part-quote. (Copy/paste/bold or italics). Don't quote the whole OP!

NiqueNique · 27/10/2022 13:29

This drives me mad! It’s irritating, and stupid - there’s absolutely no valid reason to quote the OP as WE ALREADY KNOW THAT’S WHAT THE DISCUSSION PERTAINS TO!!

Now I’ll have to sit in a dark corner and breathe until I calm down again. Grin

It actually annoys me when people don't do this, or I don't know which comment they're replying to. So yes, YABU.

You've misunderstood.
The complaint is about posters who are clearly just replying to the original post.

The assumption on a thread is this is what everyone is doing so there's no need to repeat the original post to confirm this.

The quote function is designed for when you are responding to something else e.g. either a later post by the person who started the thread, or a different poster. You then use the quote function to make it clear that you are responding to something other than the original post.

It's the real life equivalent of being D in this scenario:

A: What time is everyone getting to the party tonight
B: about 10
C: will be a bit later, maybe half ten
D: A, you asked what time I will be getting to the party? My train arrives at 10.15.

There's no need to repeat the question when answering!

Too much effort.

And then you have to scroll up to find out the person being quoted and see what else they said.

Wouldn't be an issue if we had proper quoting functions

NiqueNique · 27/10/2022 13:31

Do people really not understand what ‘OP’ means??

Kanaloa · 27/10/2022 13:31

I don’t think there’s any need to quote the op but I disagree that the quote function is annoying. I like it, it’s useful.

Do you see a lot of people quoting the op? I basically never see it at all to be honest!

It’s a bit early here in the UK but 🍷for everyone severely affected by this major issue.

NiqueNique · 27/10/2022 13:35

Thank you @Sparklingbrook I’m going to fucking well need it!!

But I like doing it

TheOrigRights · 27/10/2022 13:38

Since the update I've seen so many "were you directing that at me?" posts where someone is trying to reply to a comment, but the quoting is all screwed up, or not clear or whatever (I haven't quite worked it out).

DahliaMacNamara · 27/10/2022 13:38

It's unnecessary and it's mildly irritating. But as with so much in life, it's one of those things where complaining about it turns you into the annoying nitpicking one.

Youdoyoutoday · 27/10/2022 13:38

Who cares?

I find the mumsnet police like you more annoying. Why do you get to dictate?

RainbowsMoonbeams · 27/10/2022 13:39

Perhaps Mumsnet need to disable the quote feature for the original post?

I agree, it is very annoying and pointless.

TottersBlankly · 27/10/2022 13:42

Genius, @RainbowsMoonbeams !!

⭐️

Please do that, MNHQ.

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 13:43

I find a lot of things about MN annoying but this ‘issue’ isn’t even in my top ten.

ShowOfHands · 27/10/2022 13:43

I've used MN for the best part of two decades. I've never, ever been confused by posters replying to the op without quoting. It's painfully, stark-staring obvious they're replying to the op unless they state otherwise. Quoting the op seems like a complete and utter, irritating waste of time.

Yes! This with bells on.

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 13:45

Is there a reason MN haven’t disabled being able to quote the OP? There’s been quite a few whiny threads about it since the function was introduced.
