Just curious as I still see some in shops

OP posts:
PriamFarrl · 26/10/2022 23:32

Nope. DH put the blu ray player away last week. There is no need for physical media really any more.

PinkHeadphones · 26/10/2022 23:34

Yes. I refuse to shell out for loads of different platforms. It is cheaper to get the DVD box set second hand.
We recently watched all the seasons of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul up to the current one, for example.
Annoying, Netflix series don’t seem to be coming out on DVD though. Bastards.

takealettermsjones · 26/10/2022 23:37

Yep just watched one tonight!

CrochetIsCool · 26/10/2022 23:37

Yes, in the evening at our caravan which has no reliable Internet signal.

leccybill · 26/10/2022 23:38

No, but I did buy a CD today! How else do people listen to music in their car?! I don't have Bluetooth.

EmmaH2022 · 26/10/2022 23:39

Yes!

Ineedwinenow · 26/10/2022 23:40

We have just decided to go back to dvds after spending a ridiculous amount of money every month on all of the paid streaming services available, we have a huge selection of dvds so why not actually watch them instead of dusting them or binning them!! Bye bye sky, Netflix, Disney -+, Amazon, apple, paramount and Brit box!!!! Not sure if I’ll regret it but at the moment we are enjoying freeview and the DVDs! Wish us luck 😆

Nitgel · 26/10/2022 23:41

Yes and cds

XenoBitch · 26/10/2022 23:41

I do. I like to see the extras and commentary. You don't get any of that with streaming services.

Chocolatecustard2022 · 26/10/2022 23:41

Yes we do. We don't have any streaming services- there is too much choice on them and I don't think a lot of the programmes produced on Netflix are good. I buy my DC DVDs from hmv for their birthdays and Christmas- they like having things to open and to look forward to watching them. You also physically own the DVDs- you don't on streaming services and they can be taken down so you can't watch them anymore and if the internet goes off you're stuck

AlwaysLatte · 26/10/2022 23:42

Yous?? YABVVU!
We do have some favourites which we keep in a CD folder, in case of Wi-Fi cut or being somewhere without internet.

GrumpyPanda · 26/10/2022 23:46

No, but I did buy a CD today! How else do people listen to music in their car?! I don't have Bluetooth.

You can get a dongle for your older devices that broadcasts its own signal to your car radio. Used to use it all the time with my ipod equivalent.

shepherdlincoln · 26/10/2022 23:47

I do- I still generally rely on streaming services for most things but I was getting very frustrated that even between all the platforms I have (pretty much all of them Netflix Disney Amazon NowTV even a VPN to watch foreign Netflix!) I still wouldn't be able to find my favourite films when I wanted them.

I just started buying my absolute favourite films as and when I saw them in charity shops. I wouldn't buy new DVDs but for 99p or whatever it usually is i love being able to just sit down and watch the film I bloody want instead of hunting through the internet!!

I also collect physical music as well, vinyl and cassettes, which is just for fun really. I use Spotify most of the time but nice to have the option when WiFi is down or I don't want to be on my phone so much.

LadyAudleysSecret · 26/10/2022 23:49

We own very few. Bottom bureau drawer is where they live.

Those include extended editions of LOTR trilogy, history and documentaries, period drama box sets and various ballet syllabus DVDs (the latter are watched/used very regularly). Otherwise it must be months since we watched an actual DVD film.

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2022 23:49

Yes, sometimes via my laptop

NoSki · 26/10/2022 23:50

No as I rely on streaming or sky for 4k UHD etc to not lol terrible on the tv.

SkylightSkylight · 26/10/2022 23:50

PriamFarrl · 26/10/2022 23:32

@PriamFarrl that's a matter of choice & opinion.

@dotty636 yep (well I still buy them. I need to look at the DVD player it didn't work last time. But I'll buy a new one if I need to).

there are old series of things they deem
*inappropriate these days, that I'm
collecting on DVD. I know that one day we don't be able to play them, but I'll enjoy them while I can.

  • nothing seedy, just 70's comedy I grew up on.

I only buy old stuff though really,

AloysiusBear · 26/10/2022 23:52

Yes. With streaming you never get to own it, they change what's on offer constantly and atm what's on netflix in particular is poor. Any half decent movie is never on there or if it is, not for long.

We can spend less to watch more buying discs and swapping/sharing with friends and family and its one time cost.

Subscription services are a way to make us all spend more without ever owning, they get rid of second hand markets etc so retain profit with corporates. Avoid avoid avoid

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2022 23:55

I'm sure we'll watch some of our DVDs again at some point - things like Lord of the Rings or Star Trek movies when DD is home for Xmas.
I do have a disk in the machine at the moment - Jillian Michaels 'no more trouble zones' which I'm trying to do once or twice a week.Grin

gamerchick · 26/10/2022 23:55

Of course. I don't take wifi for granted.

1stWorldProblems · 26/10/2022 23:56

Yup & VHS too. I'm not paying for stuff I've already paid for unless I really love it. If I really love it, then I will also buy it on dvd as you never know when your streaming service will loseq access to a series eg Farscape has just moved off Prime this month.

(I have 3 vhs players in the loft inherited from friends who've given up on that media.)

FrenchOnionShoeBox · 26/10/2022 23:59

Yes, but rarely and most of what we watch is via streaming. The only thing I still watch on DVD is a long running TV series which is released in box sets with loads of special extras that aren’t available elsewhere.

NannyR · 27/10/2022 00:00

I do, my local charity shop sells them 5 for £1, I watch them then return back to the shop to resell. You don't tend to get newer films though, it's older films that get donated but there's always something worth watching.

notdaddycool · 27/10/2022 00:01

I bought 3 for £1 last year as we’d stayed in an isolated cabin with no wifi and wanted back up entertainment, but that would be the only reason.

BadLad · 27/10/2022 00:07

I buy DVDs but very rarely do I put them into a DVD player to watch them.

Instead they get ripped onto the computer and then copied into tablet to watch on commutes. That way I don't have to worry WiFi, data, series being removed from streaming services or episodes being cancelled or wokewashed.

I buy a lot of films from charity shops, rip them, and then donate them straight back.
