Just curious as I still see some in shops

OP posts:
ramabanana · 27/10/2022 00:25

I don't have any sort of CD/DVD player in the house and haven't for a few years, haven't missed it too much to be honest

MrsPear · 27/10/2022 00:42

yes as I like old films and Netflix it’s all modern American crap. I read an article the other week and apparently streaming is really bad for the environment.

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 00:44

No, got nothing to play then on. Local charity shop won’t take them any more either.

Batiqueattic · 27/10/2022 00:48

Yep. Loads.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 27/10/2022 00:51

Yes, because things aren't reliably on Netflix, Prime etc and sometimes they disappear before you get to see (I was on episode 2 of The Thick of It when it vanished... grr). I also buy CDs for the car. So much more convenient than having to faff uploading to a device, charging it, connecting it to my car somehow, and making it make noises. And they're usually dead cheap on Ebay, although CDs seem to be going up in price of late, so I think they're making a comeback.

Maray1967 · 27/10/2022 01:01

Yes, because the streaming is not reliable. DH does not agree but he’s looked the idiot at times when something wasn’t available and I could just produce the DVD. Mine are going nowhere. Neither are the CDs.

grey12 · 27/10/2022 01:03

No but I still listen to CDs 😉

Georgeandzippyzoo · 27/10/2022 01:17

leccybill · 26/10/2022 23:38

No, but I did buy a CD today! How else do people listen to music in their car?! I don't have Bluetooth.

I hate my car because it doesn't have a cd player just bloody Bluetooth. I don't stream music so nothing on my phone!

kavalkada · 27/10/2022 01:26

I do because I love old films and special features and cheesy 80es miniseries.
Just this week I have watched Frasier and special features from Gone With the Wind - 1939 Hollywood's greatest year and Moviola: The Scarlett O'Hara War.
I love my DVD's

Everydaywheniwakeup · 27/10/2022 01:33

We watch loads. I've got DD 2 for Christmas.

Emily1583 · 27/10/2022 01:36

Yes. I still have DVDs. I love my comedies and I find lots of comedies from over years on streaming sites have scenes missing as they are now deemed not suitable in today's political correct world.

EmmiJay · 27/10/2022 01:38

Last year I stored all the dvd's in the cupboard (we had about 560 something I think it was). Took them all out of their cases and put them in binders. It was actually a little sad. End of an era sort of. Now we just stream everything and enjoy the extra space in the living room😅

NoodleNuts · 27/10/2022 01:39

Nope, i have no DVD/CD/VHS player anymore, even though I have tons of DVD's/CD's/videos that I can't bear to part with!

We all have to move with the times, I now stream music via Bluetooth to a speaker, use Netflix etc for films and use iPlayer etc to catch up on TV programmes I've missed.

There is really no need to insist on staying on the dark ages!

Chloefairydust · 27/10/2022 01:54

Nope, we stream everything we watch now…

The residents in the care home I work love to watch DVDs though, I donated some old ones to the home, and it’s nice they get a second life lol.

crackersforcrackers · 27/10/2022 02:12

Yes! I have loads of DVDs mostly for the reasons above- don't have to switch between services to find something specific, for watching with commentary/extras, a lot of platforms don't have old black and whites and some hotels/holidays don't have WIFI/TVs so a laptop and a handful of DVDs is invaluable.

lannistunut · 27/10/2022 02:17

Yes, but I just buy secondhand, I get great films at the local charity shops and then return them. I no longer buy new DVDs but have quite a few old ones.

Pocodaku · 27/10/2022 02:32

I do. I love cinema from all over the world, and old films, most of which aren’t available on any streaming platforms. So I’ve got a large DVD collection. Mubi streaming is starting to have a very good collection, though, so I may start to cull soon!

Giggorata · 27/10/2022 03:24

AloysiusBear · 26/10/2022 23:52

Yes. With streaming you never get to own it, they change what's on offer constantly and atm what's on netflix in particular is poor. Any half decent movie is never on there or if it is, not for long.

We can spend less to watch more buying discs and swapping/sharing with friends and family and its one time cost.

Subscription services are a way to make us all spend more without ever owning, they get rid of second hand markets etc so retain profit with corporates. Avoid avoid avoid

Absolutely agree with this.

I'll have a look at Mubi streaming, thank you, @Pocodaku
But I will still use DVDs and continue to do so because I can't always stream the films or series I want, especially the obscure sci-fi and folk horror ones.

They are either not available at all or disappear.
Often they have been cut or censored in some way, particularly “wokewashed” which is an excellent description, @BadLad

jennyofthenorth · 27/10/2022 03:34

YES!!! Some movies cost to stream and lets be real, Im not paying $10 to buy a movie to stream when I already have it

sashh · 27/10/2022 03:50

Occasionally.

This one will blow your mind.

There was a request for a VHS player a couple of weeks ago.

My carer found two in the shed, wrapped in bin liners and they both worked.

Summerfun54321 · 27/10/2022 03:58

Remember when you used to go to the video rental shop and choose a film to watch and hire it for the evening. Those were the days.

Ragwort · 27/10/2022 04:12

I wish more people would! I manage a charity shop and am drowning in DVDs so many people donate them to us but I rarely sell any ... just this week someone donated a box of over 100 DVDs ... I will be lucky to sell just 10% and then I have the issue of how to get rid of them Sad. Even at 5 for 99p or 'just a donation' no one wants them ... even if I put them out for free!

expat101 · 27/10/2022 04:18

Sure do, have our favourites. Will trot out Notting Hill and Love Actually over christmas... as we do.

At least if things get really grim economically, then we can cancel the monthly subs and still watch our DVDS.

Same with books, I struggle reading my ipad after a while, whereas not a problem with a real book. Have recently had my eyes checked, but electronics seem to make them tire quickly. But if the internet/power goes down, I still have my books.

OneDayAtATimePlease · 27/10/2022 04:30

Yes, and my husband has much loved Star Wars VHS copies without all the additional "improvements" made after their initial release.

We also buy our music on CD too. Probably makes us look like dinosaurs but works for us.

I wonder if something could be done via a food bank? Maybe a portable DVD player and a couple of films out on loan.

I'm thinking portable because it could be loaned fully charged in case someone doesn't have electricity.
