Just curious as I still see some in shops

OP posts:
easylikeasundaymorning · 27/10/2022 07:32

No I binned them about 3 years ago.
Have no need for them and they were annoying me using up storage space even with the option of taking them out of their boxes and putting them in binders.

AnnapurnaSanctuary · 27/10/2022 07:37

Yes, we use Cinema Paradiso and get sent a few every month. We occasionally re-watch the ones we own too.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 27/10/2022 07:38

Yes, we have loads - ought to get rid of a few really. I'd hate not being able to watch a film I really fancied because it wasn't available on Netflix/whatever.

TeenDivided · 27/10/2022 07:40

We watch DVDs. We rarely buy them from charity shops though as we already own the ones they sell that we would be interested in. Newer films are less available as more people are streaming so don't then hand them on.

glamourousindierockandroll · 27/10/2022 07:44

No, I sold them to music magpie years ago.

Plingston · 27/10/2022 07:48

Yes, but not that frequently. We have loads in those cd cases. The films or series I specifically want to watch aren't always available on streaming services, or are available to 'rent' for quite a steep fee, so we watch them. Out children also play console games and we prefer to buy physical copies so that they have gifts to open and can also sell at a later date.

Isthisexpected · 27/10/2022 07:50

I read an article about the power of streaming services yesterday. Once a provider decides not to pay for a title and if no one else picks it up, it's gone. No more opportunity to watch it without a DVD ever! So it's best to keep your favourite films on DVD.

AnApparitionQuipped · 27/10/2022 07:55

Yes. I don't understand why people want to be dependent on what the streaming services choose to show, or to pay a subscription/charge per view, when you can buy the DVD and watch it whenever you want.

People are sleepwalking into a society where their choices are being taken away from them and where they will increasingly be locked into subscriptions that chip away at their income.

londonrach · 27/10/2022 07:56

Yes daily. What else is there. DVDs are perfect.

sanityisamyth · 27/10/2022 07:59

leccybill · 26/10/2022 23:38

No, but I did buy a CD today! How else do people listen to music in their car?! I don't have Bluetooth.

My horsebox had a cassette player!! DS(8) was sooooo confused. I bought a cassette-Bluetooth adapter for it, so I can now play my music from my phone through the horsebox speakers as the radio doesn't work!!

I don't know if there's a CD-Bluetooth adaptor?!

I’m surprised so many people are saying they watch DVD’s. I volunteer in a charity shop and we sell them for 10p each or 15 for £1. Even at that low price we only sell about 5 a week and have stopped accepting them as donations as we have so many in store.

And yet HMV in our town still has racks and racks of DVDs, so someone must be buying them.

RampantIvy · 27/10/2022 08:06

We have shelves full of CDs, DVDs and books, although these days I prefer reading on my kindle.

DD still loves watching Scooby Doo (she is 22 and working). They can't get broadband in their flat for another month so she has asked me to bring all her Scooby Doo DVDs when I go and visit her.

I have box sets of series that were only available on streaming services that we don't subscribe to. They are advert free, and I can watch them whenever I want.

luxxlisbon · 27/10/2022 08:08

I think the majority of the people on this thread are missing the fact that you can own something digitally.
I can buy a digital copy of a movie and I own it, I can watch it whenever I want. It’s the exact same concept without having to have a DVD player and a bunch of physical dvds.

Streaming/ pay per view is not the only way you can watch something without a dvd.

Saltywalruss · 27/10/2022 08:13

Yes and we still watch videos as in VHS 😀

Because I don’t want to watch anything more than once. For example, right now I’m watching Handmaids Tale. When it’s finished I’ll watch something else. I don’t have the desire to watch the same thing endlessly.

murmuration · 27/10/2022 08:28

We watch DVDs. Our internet isn’t fast enough for streaming. Waiting for the DVD is the only way we’ve been able to see some of the new series. And the quality of DVDs has really gone down, as far as interface/menus and such (things like underlines where there would be spaces in episode titles - guess whoever coded it couldn’t or didn’t bother to figure out how to show a string with spaces).

xogossipgirlxo · 27/10/2022 08:30

I do, but I buy mine on ebay.

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 27/10/2022 08:30

Yes! We have lots, and not everything we like is available on streaming services. Some things are older and will never come onto streaming and I always want to be able to see favourites.

FlowerBrooch · 27/10/2022 08:31

I have not bought a DVD for a few years but have kept mine. They are all in
dvd folders and not in the original boxes though I kept the paper sleeves of my favourites, most are never on streaming services.

I have many old black and white films such as Whisky Galore, Great Expectations and others from Ealing studios. Quite a few foreign language films or world cinema as they call it and also quite a few old BBC dramas. I also own a few musicals. We have a games console they can be played on so it has a dual use.

I do rewatch some films.

User17956743 · 27/10/2022 08:33

We have all the streaming services and some series are only available on DVD, I have been watching the series Cardiac Arrest recently and it is not available anywhere but DVD

lugeforlife · 27/10/2022 08:33

I get that you can own digitally and I have some stuff which I've bought. My point is more having a heap of stuff on dvd already I don't want to repurchase it.

So for me, I wouldn't bin my dvds yet because i don't have the spare cash to change the format when the method we have is fine.

Helendee · 27/10/2022 08:33

I love DVDs, I actually own them and watch them in bed on my personal DVD player, love it!

Mommabear20 · 27/10/2022 08:34

We don't buy them anymore but definitely still watch them as our TV in bedroom is old and doesn't do streaming 😂 we have streamlined the amount of DVDs we own though, and only have the ones we absolutely love and watch frequently.

KimberleyClark · 27/10/2022 08:35

Given that vinyl is making a comeback, it’s not inconceivable that DVDs will too.

OnABreeze · 27/10/2022 08:37

Yes, Girls on Amazon Prime was £25 a series. My local DVD store (yes I have one) was £3 a series. Some of the online platforms are rip-offs!
