Just curious as I still see some in shops

Yes occasionally if there's something we can't stream or there's a film I fancy watching but can't find online e.g. at the moment we are re watching Phoenix nights which we couldn't find online anywhere.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 27/10/2022 05:31

Should have said we watch them through DP's Xbox although my parents still have an actual DVD player too x

FatOaf · 27/10/2022 05:40

Yes. I want to watch films that I want to watch, not that Netflix/Amazon/etc. want me to watch. I buy them from eBay or charity shops.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/10/2022 05:44

Have hundreds. In binders.

Often cheaper than downloads.

iratepirate · 27/10/2022 05:56

Not at home but the DC have some in the car for longer journeys.

MenopauseSucks · 27/10/2022 05:59

Yup! Watched one last night. I've got quite a large collection.
If I like a film, I'll always get the DVD so even if it's dropped from the streaming service, I can still watch it.
Couldn't find anything that particularly grabbed me so enjoyed some 'Rising Damp' instead!

Dougieowner · 27/10/2022 06:02

Yes, watch DVD's and listen to CD's.
Can't see it changing anytime soon as I have no interest in streaming services plus as we have such a large collection of DVD's & CD's, why would we get rid of them?

onlythreenow · 27/10/2022 06:30

All the time, and yes to CD also.

Michiru · 27/10/2022 06:38

Of course. I don't like the idea of not owning anything, which is the way we are heading now.

Streaming services always start out great, then lose quality or introduce more and more ads or have you pay extra in some other way (Prime is especially bad for this now; if I didn't enjoy the free shipping on most goods in general I'd not pay for the service).
I don't have a DVD player, but I use a console to do the job.

It will also be a sad day when my car packs in and I will be forced to buy one without a CD drive. I always switch over to CD when there is too much babble on the radio, which is getting way too frequent across all stations.

Greydog · 27/10/2022 06:50

Yes, watch DVDs and still have CDs. And it's not a problem having no CD player in the car, I've just ripped the ones I like to a USB stick, and use that when in the car

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 27/10/2022 06:56

Yes but in fact it’s mostly the dc that buy and watch dvd’s they are 12,16 and 19. They like to buy box sets of their favourites because you often can’t get all of them on streaming services and they add one but removed the other type thing.

User17956743 · 27/10/2022 07:00

Yes, some things that I want to watch are not on streaming services so I head to Amazon or eBay for a second hand DVD, usually from somewhere like Music Magpie. I replaced my old DVD player in the last year to watch them

yerdaindicatesonbends · 27/10/2022 07:02

Occasionally. We have things like Harry Potter on DVD because trying to watch that via streaming services would be a nightmare (different platforms, cost). We keep a small selection for DD and us also cause you never know when you might have an internet outage.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 27/10/2022 07:13

Never buy new ones, no. Except League of Gentlemen when that was removed from streaming services. We have full fibre to the house, so more reliable than WiFi, phones we could tether to, and Bluetooth in the car. Plus we don't watch that much TV anyway!

We have an elderly friend who buys them for us for birthday/Christmas.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/10/2022 07:15

Yes.

Our internet has been playing up for the last week or so and DVD's have been a lifesaver.

thelobsterquadrille · 27/10/2022 07:18

NoodleNuts · 27/10/2022 01:39

Nope, i have no DVD/CD/VHS player anymore, even though I have tons of DVD's/CD's/videos that I can't bear to part with!

We all have to move with the times, I now stream music via Bluetooth to a speaker, use Netflix etc for films and use iPlayer etc to catch up on TV programmes I've missed.

There is really no need to insist on staying on the dark ages!

Why is it staying in the dark ages?

Streaming only works if you have internet access. If your connection goes off for several days/weeks, would you not miss having DVD's?

SirMoose · 27/10/2022 07:19

No. I use Netflix, Disney and prime. If I want to own something I can buy it on prime for about a quid.

lugeforlife · 27/10/2022 07:19

Like most others yes. We have box sets, special editions, films we love etc. to be fair we can probably get shot of a few (we have heaps of Disney but the kids are teens now).

Rarely buy new ones although dh has ordered top gun. Dd1 buys old teen films in charity shops - happy was the day she found all the twilight movies for a £1.

luxxlisbon · 27/10/2022 07:20

No.
I don’t even know anyone who still owns a DVD player.

lugeforlife · 27/10/2022 07:22

For the people who say no, are they like my mum and pil who don't really rewatch stuff? My mum has heaps of dvds which she's only really watched once so I can see the point there. But we've kept the ones we rewatch over and over again.

KimberleyClark · 27/10/2022 07:24

Yes we do. Also we go to a holiday cottage every year which has no wifi so no way of streaming anything. I usually download a few films on to my laptop from Netflix/prime before we go and take a few DVDs as well. Also have a lot of old home/holiday videos on DVD (originally VHS).

GeorgeorRuth · 27/10/2022 07:25

We have DVDs in our caravan for holidays. Sites often don't have reliable TV or WiFi signals. Wet days or dark evenings are movie nights.

Fairyliz · 27/10/2022 07:27

I’m surprised so many people are saying they watch DVD’s. I volunteer in a charity shop and we sell them for 10p each or 15 for £1. Even at that low price we only sell about 5 a week and have stopped accepting them as donations as we have so many in store.

We watch stuff all the time, every evening but everything we want to watch is accessible via the internet.

AuntieMarys · 27/10/2022 07:31

We have just got rid of ours and about 100 dvds.
I have come to the conclusion that I dont need to rewatch films or series, as there is so much new stuff out there. Same with books. 400 books went too.
