To hate the term woke?

lowgreyclouds · 25/10/2022 08:29

I was reading a thread about a netball sponsorship debacle and someone posted an awesome tweet about people using the term "woke".

'Explain what you mean by Woke & then we can have the conversation'. Incredibly put by RakieAyola
This should be the response to every commentator, Journalist & MP who've become far too comfortable throwing the Term 'Woke' into every one of their dog whistle opinions

Does anyone else hate the term too? I only ever hear it used negatively on SM.

I hate it too, and if anyone uses it as an insult i instantly dismiss their opinion as very much not worth listening to. Suella Braverman comes to mind!

Overandunderit · 25/10/2022 08:51

Yes it's a lazy insult used to deflect from people discussing real issues.

BattleOfPastings · 25/10/2022 08:54

I hate the term but i find it handy when people use it

always helpful when people out themselves for being absolute cunts

MissTrip82 · 25/10/2022 08:56

yes I find it useful also - have never heard it from anyone who hasn’t almost immediately proven themselves to be a total arsehole.

SirCharlesRainier · 25/10/2022 09:00

Agreed. It's the new "political correctness gone mad" and instantly makes me embarrassed on behalf of the person using it.

They could state their objections properly and honestly, and have the conversation. ("I think it's bad that there are more black people on TV adverts because...", "I think it's bad that schools talk about mental health because..."). But that would require courage and the ability to marshall an argument. So "woke" it is.

LeningradSymphony · 25/10/2022 09:12

Yes and no.

I find it mildly irritating when used by someone describing themselves in earnest (so not sarcastically), but I get the meaning. It means someone who 'woke up' to injustice, I believe.

I find it very annoying when used as an insult about others. 'They're 'woke'' with a sneer. Like yeah, fuck those people, caring about social justice.

xogossipgirlxo · 25/10/2022 09:22

I'm not bothered by the word, but woke culture gets on my nerve.

Cavviesarethebest · 25/10/2022 09:25

But it is used to describe people who have hijacked the rhetoric of social justice who don’t care about social justice at all

Newrumpus · 25/10/2022 09:26

Agree. The word is fine. It’s the petty virtual signalling that is annoying.

Oysterbabe · 25/10/2022 09:28

It's usually used by people who are racist and / or homophobic. Like people objecting to ads featuring same sex couples on the grounds that the company are just being woke, when what they actually mean is it makes them uncomfortable because they are homophobic.

WomenShouldWinWomensSports · 25/10/2022 09:29

So... you don't know the meaning of a term and your default position is to hate it? Have I got that right? If not, what is it that you find profound about this non-point that this non-entity has made?

notawittyname1954 · 25/10/2022 09:30

I hate it when its used as a sneering insult.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/10/2022 09:32

YANBU @lowgreyclouds. It is a useful Dickhead Indicator though.

Absolutely this. It's not a term that's ever been used not tongue in cheek or by someone being disparaging really so I don't see how it's a useful signifier of anything. It's the new"political correctness gaaawwnnn maaadd" isn't it, nothing is really new in the world. I guess the new verb "virtue signalling" amounts to the same thing.

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 25/10/2022 09:36

I hate all those insults. Things like "snowflake" "Karen" and whatever. It's just a way to insult the person and not debate the argument because they're not informed enough.

RudsyFarmer · 25/10/2022 09:42

I don’t think you’re right about that. I get irritated by the mixed race woman and white father and perfect colour mixed children with relaxed curled hair in ads, because I think it’s a nod to diversity whilst still being the ‘right side’ of ‘acceptable’ colour wise. I feel the same about the random trans person now in the channel 4 pottery show. I doubt very much that she would have been picked five years ago. I fully expect they scoured the country to find her as a tick box exercise.

Thats the wokeism that often gets criticised.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

She's my MP.

Your comment is spot on

ShhDoNotTell · 25/10/2022 09:45

It’s a perfectly acceptable term to use in the correct context because it’s shorthand to indicate a rather complex concept. When it isn’t acceptable is as an insult aimed at a person.

FuckabethFuckor · 25/10/2022 09:45

It’s one of those terms that has acquired an increasingly diffused meaning, and is often thrown around by people who don’t really understand it. On both positive and negative sides of the coin.

ShandaLear · 25/10/2022 09:46

80% of the time if you ask people what it mean they can’t actually tell you. It’s lazy stereotyping and just used to shut down argument. People who use ‘woke’ in a debate may as well stand there and say ‘yer mum’.

dreamingbohemian · 25/10/2022 09:48

'Wokeism' is even worse

Suella Braverman is apparently a very intelligent person, but she doesn’t half enjoy identifying as a fool.

Sparklesocks · 25/10/2022 09:50

It started as meaning to be aware of racial/social discrimination but now people using it as a pejorative for virtual signalling or a new ‘it’s PC gone mad!!’ type sentiment.

Smilelesstalkmore · 25/10/2022 09:52

It is definitely the new 'PC gorn mad' insult.

But tbh there are insults on all sides that get slung around that don't mean anything - gammon, TERF, snowflake etc.

notmyrealmoniker · 25/10/2022 09:57

When woke is the unquestioning acceptance of men proclaiming to be women invading women's personal spaces, I'm totally anti. It's just another name for political correctness
