To think that it is ok to jump the queue when with an infant?

DH, DC (3 months) and I were flying for the first time today to see family, long expected break!
We had booked priority, lounges and everything we could to relieve a bit of the stress.
Priority queue was quite long to check in luggage and we started queuing nicely.
Another mum came along and told us we could jump the queue which we did gladly as baby started stirring a little bit.
However it enraged some of the people in the queue, literally shouting that it was very out of order and that was no such thing as baby class, and what is wrong with you people etc.
Interestingly, every other step in the airport (security, customs, boarding) we were invited nicely by the staff to jump the queue.

So YANBU, of course you can jump the queue when with an infant
YABU no, you should queue like everyone else

Don’t they ask that people with children board first? Like wheelchairs and people needing assistance? I was always ushered to the front when I had babies. I most definitely would not shout at anyone with young children boarding before me. Christ, flying with children is a nightmare.

In fact, I honestly don’t get the rush to get on or off a plane first. Now that my kids are older, we time it so we swan on at the latest possible moment. The only concern would be if you have carry on, but they tend to tell you at checkin or whilst boarding if there’s room for your bag. If not, backpacks and the likes can go under the seats. Half the time the plane never leaves on schedule so basically you’re just sitting in a awkward seat waiting for take of. We’re also the last leaving the plane. I have rarely gotten off any plane to see my luggage waiting on the carousel. So what’s the rush 🤷‍♀️

It was check in, not boarding.

georgarina · 24/10/2022 20:23

Last time I was at Primark with DD they told me I didn't have to wait and could just go to the front next time. Not sure I'd be brave enough to just do it on my own though!

Confusion101 · 24/10/2022 20:24

If u were just checking in luggage, could one of u not have queued and the other walked around to settle baby? YABU

Same shit. It speeds things up.

ToadSmall · 24/10/2022 20:25

OP I think most of the people on this thread haven’t travelled with a baby/toddler recently (if ever).

Don't be daft.

Sharming · 24/10/2022 20:25

I cannot understand the queuing logic on flights.

To me - being first in any queue has the following potential benefits:

  1. Getting whatever it is you're queuing for first. e.g. food, the toilet, a ticket
  2. Getting a better place in whatever your'e queuing for e.g. a better seat, a place at the front.
  3. Getting your thing done so you can go do other things.

People do realise that the flight can't leave until EVERYONE is on the flight, and you already have seats allocated to you - don't they? So the ONLY benefit to being at the front of the queue to board a flight is #3 above - getting your thing done first. Which in this case means getting on the plane, getting your stuff out of the way, getting settled in your seats first.

ANYONE who flies regularly knows that the number one delay to boarding and the most annoying thing is people who have boarded in front of you faffing with their stuff and blocking the aisle, preventing other people from getting to their seats.

A person travelling with a small child inevitably has more stuff and more faff. Would you prefer that person to get on the plane first to give them plenty of time to sort their stuff out before you need to get to your seat - or would you prefer for them to be right in front of you and block the aisle preventing you from sitting down - or worse still, would you prefer for them to get on last and delay everyone while we wait for them to deal with their stuff?

It's a no brainer to get those people on first. It benefits everyone.

People who complain are morons - ignore them.

Duttercup · 24/10/2022 20:26

Jumping the check in queue is pretty cheeky.

Frequently: But this is check in.

You were rude, OP, and had your arse handed to you by the other customers who you forced to wait longer. I'd have been really pissed off with you too, although I wouldn't have said anything.

DogInATent · 24/10/2022 20:27

If an infant can't cope with the check-in queue, what's it going to be like on the flight?

Confusion101 · 24/10/2022 20:27

UneFoisAuChalet · 24/10/2022 20:24

How does allowing families to skip the queue speed up check in? 🤣🤣🤣

OP I think most of the people on this thread haven’t travelled with a baby/toddler recently (if ever). Whenever I’ve been at an airport with a pram I’ve been called forward at every stage - bag drop, security and boarding. So if a fellow parent were to tell me that a staff member had indicated to come forward, I might have followed. You could have checked with a staff member yes. But really I think you were just unlucky with some aggressive pricks in the queue with you. How were they to know you hadn’t heard the staff member telling the other lady to come forward?

People on Mumsnet love being combative. Just ignore and have a lovely break.

FYI I once used my baby to get into a lounge for free, how’s that for “gobsmacking”?! 🤪

Nope.
Single mother who first flew with a 10 week old and subsequently at least 4 times a year.
Paid for Priority Boarding if available.
Can remember once, Alitalia, being called to board early.
Can also remember on numerous occasions struggling with pushchair and child and bag, being helped up and down stairs by fellow passengers (almost always Brits, almost always dads travelling with young families themselves)
OP is a CF and so was the CF who told her to do it.

Duttercup · 24/10/2022 20:28

@Sharming I agree that getting families boarding first is sensible but the check in queue?

Sharming · 24/10/2022 20:28

and now I've read it properly and realised you were queuing for check in.

No - you should have to wait like everyone else. Skipping the queue benefits only you, and no one else. and they've all paid for priority, why should you get extra priority over them?

Anjo2011 · 24/10/2022 20:28

Is that you Holly?

user1471457751 · 24/10/2022 20:28

@Sharming you could say people who don't read the thread or at least the OP posts are morons too. So perhaps read it next time. She didn't just push in at boarding, she pushed in at check in too.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 24/10/2022 20:29

When we travelled long haul with our children we were always put at the front of the queue by the staff along with all the other parents.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/10/2022 20:29

Another mum came along and told us we could jump the queue

Who made her Queen of the queue? Have a bit of respect and wait your turn.

Cantchooseaname · 24/10/2022 19:48

When travelling with a small infant/ child almost everyone everywhere has been lovely and made it as easy as possible, except LAX. That was hideous.

If there is a hell, and I am bad enough to go there, it will resemble LA, and the seventh circle will be LAX.

It's my least favourite place on earth. And I've travelled in war zones.

QuillBill · 24/10/2022 20:30

Everyone knows all of that @Sharming. But it's not relevant at check in.

pollykitty · 24/10/2022 20:30

When my daughter was a baby, we were offered to jump the queue numerous times while travelling and always did. Now my daughter is older and I don't care at all if people with babies (or worse toddlers) jump queues, they deserve it more than anyone else imho. Recently we went on an Air Canada flight and all families with children under 12 were invited to board first. Our DD is 10 so we went. The staff were super sweet but OMG the other passengers. They were OUTRAGED. We and other families got yelled at as though it was our insistence or whatever that allowed us to go first with our children of all ages. Staff told everyone to shut up.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/10/2022 20:30

If you want priority boarding then pay for it. Just means you'll be sat on the plane while everyone else is finishing their drinks in the airport bar. But up to you... The plane leaves at the same time for everyone.
