This is not democracy.

Hi @Badbadbunny

Would you happen to have a link to that as I've heard it mentioned a few times recently but it escaped me at the time (I put a self-imposed ban on all news during covid as it was destroying my sanity). I'd like to read a bit about that to see what justification he gave and who was affected. Thank you.

This is removed again. Truss did what she said she would do when she was elected, that is democracy, elect someone to do what they say.
She was elected by a small number of people in Britain, though 57% of party members, most of whom probably do not hold degrees in finance or economics from reputable universities.

The moment she was removed democracy failed.
Again, no. She lost the confidence of her own party and of Parliament. If a vote of no confidence had been tabled, she would have lost it, or there would have been a riot at the point of voting, as happened with the fracking vote, or the whips would all have resigned, and the Pound would have tanked even further.

Sunak received 43% of the votes from the party membership in the leadership contest against Truss.
He received 137 votes from the Parliamentary Party, vs 113 for Truss.

There is no reason to believe he won't press forward with the agenda he outlined when running against Truss, both PP and local party members.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/10/2022 17:58

I can see why Conservative Party members are not happy. They rejected Sunak and now he's PM. They rejected Hunt and now he's Chancellor.🤷‍♀️

However YABU @MrsRobinsonsHandprints I don't think a GE is the answer right now.

It's remarkable that someone could be proud tory for all these years and in all that time never noticed that they didn't elect the PM. Just by coincidence the first time they notice is the first time the PM isn't white. Suddenly they can only be pushed so far.

This just took me aback a bit and I had to think about it. The fact he isn’t white never even occurred to me. I can’t actually believe some people would care

mathanxiety · 24/10/2022 17:59

just to remind you who are calling for a GE that we do not elect the prime minister we are like the government and they elect the prime minister. We are not a presidential democracy

This.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 24/10/2022 18:00

Hilarious all these Labour supporters blaming Subaru when there was Starmer urging more and more lockdowns in spite of the vaccine.

Starmer didn't have any power. I have no problem at all with criticising him for his covid stances, particularly when he was flirting with wanting more restrictions at the end of 2021, but the people to hold accountable are the ones who made the decisions. Stamer simply wasn't important enough to fall into that category. His views didn't matter in enough. That's just how it is when you're a newly installed Opposition leader going up against a party with a huge majority.

Quirkyme · 24/10/2022 18:01

@AlderAppleAsh

I know you might mean well when you say "I actually can't believe people would care"

But like it's kinda annoying when people say things like this, or seem like shocked that racism exists.

Yes, we know it shouldn't bla bla bla bla, but in 2022 it does.
Like how much of a big big rock must you be living in to not know that racism exists in 2022.

mathanxiety · 24/10/2022 18:01

Many would have died anyway of one of these things relatively quickly even without COVID because they are very elderly so struggle to fight off infections.

So throw them under the bus because they're practically dead anyway...

Are human beings really expendable? There are higher values than human life?

FixundFoxi · 24/10/2022 18:02

So people saying 'can't vote labour cos of Jeremy Corbyn' weren't voting for a PM ?

DamnUserName21 · 24/10/2022 18:02

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 17:56

😂😂
Subaru always get the blame!!!

Found the racist

Oh do fuck off. I was quoting from the FT. Here is the article if you want to enlighten yourself. Financial Times - Tory Party Membership Demographic

When I click the link it is behind a paywall but it came up on a google search. The article is called - Who are the Tory party members picking the next UK prime minister?

mathanxiety · 24/10/2022 18:06

You're voting for the candidate of a specific political party in the UK.

The majority party will send one of its members to Buckingham Palace and the formality of the Monarch asking him or her to form a government will take place.

If the leader of the majority party dropped dead the day after the votes were counted, a new leader of that party would be invited to shake hands with the King and asked to form a government.

...............
If people wouldn't vote Labour because Corbyn, more fools them. The fascist tabloids have far too much influence over public opinion in the UK.

54isanopendoor · 24/10/2022 18:07

I'm pleased that the first Asian PM has been elected (less pleased it's a man).
Not pleased that he's a billionaire (who can't fill his car at the pump).
But .. that's all by the bye - personal musings.
Much more importantly, he was Chancellor when we got into this mess so I'm not optimistic he'll be great getting us out of it. Better than Boris or Truss - yes.
But that's an exceptionally low bar.

I'd have much preferred a General Election.
Where I would NOT have voted Tory.

Worriedddd · 24/10/2022 17:45

What a load of overly emotive rhetoric. The very elderly can die of all sorts even a simple urine infection or drink going into their lungs. They do die of pneumonia and flu. Many would have died anyway of one of these things relatively quickly even without COVID because they are very elderly so struggle to fight off infections.

It might not be nice but that's the truth.

My dad died in March. He'd have been 94 in June. Now if Covid got him at 84 he'd have missed 10 mostly good years. I found the laugh 😂 emoji earlier a bit annoying tbh. Lots of elderly ppl have underlying conditions and cope reasonably well for years.

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 18:08

TurquoiseDress · 24/10/2022 17:11

Bloody hell, great let's wheel another PM in and see what happens in the next few weeks/months

What does Sunak know about your average working person?

He's married to a billionaire/heiress, who incidentally doesn't pay tax or similar

We didn't elect him, it was default after Boris and Mordant pulled out

General election now please!

Since we're ordering our ideal scenario, could I get an appointment with my GP on Monday please and an appointment with my dentist on Tuesday? Oh and since you're paying could I get a side order of a 20% pay rise and a 10% cut in income tax?

It's a very partial truth. How many 50 or 60 year olds died? Answer: a whole bunch. Averages are only one way of presenting data.

How many people have been forced out of the workforce by Long covid ? Answer: well no one is actually counting but, judging by the waiting lists for the long covid clinics it's quite a few? What's the cost of that to a) the economy b) the country?

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 18:09

I can see why Conservative Party members are not happy. They rejected Sunak and now he's PM. They rejected Hunt and now he's Chancellor.🤷‍♀️

And the issue, apart from the fact they will leave the party in droves now, put simply who is going to lay the ground for any election, or knock on doors and drum up support? Who is going to spend their weekends and evenings working on an election for Sunak. A leader that no one voted for except the men in grey suits. The total disregard is seismic and totally irreparable. Even the Sunak supporters are quite frankly stunned at this development.

Unless Sunak is the best PM we have ever had, and rides us out of this crisis and goes on to be absolutely bloody incredible he is dead meat anyway.

I have heard from very reliable sources that Boris did in fact have the support required, more than the 100 backers required, and he wanted to run but pulled out unexpectedly. There is much much more to this than meets the eye.

I am ashamed to be British.

Sunak is going to rain down the hardest hitting cuts and fiscal policy we have seen in decades. In fact he has just announced this intention publicly. So watch out folks. You think Truss was bad, buckle up, because the proverbial is just about to hit the fan and some. The Conservatives have clearly given up all hope on the next election - hence their indifference with party members, that is now written it off, so now they will do their worst in the next two years. I am a conservative, and I now feel very afraid of what is coming next. Sunak won't be thinking with his heart or his past experience of poverty which is non existent - he will be thinking purely through his spreadsheet.

mathanxiety · 24/10/2022 18:12

A leader that no one voted for except the men in grey suits.

43% of party members voted for Sunak.

toomuchlaundry · 24/10/2022 18:12

@Worriedddd how many health workers died with COVID, I’m sure they weren’t in their 80s

UnCivil · 24/10/2022 18:12

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 15:38

The only problem is he doesn’t have the confidence of the house or party. Hundreds of them voted for someone else.

Not true. He had officially substantiated support from over 180 MPs earlier today. BoJo claims that he had reached the magic 100 but there was no official confirmation and Penny M got no where near the 100 required to move to the next phase.

EmmaH2022 · 24/10/2022 18:12

Question for Tory party members - some have said they'll resign

what you like to have happened?

this is unprecedented, but if the party felt Truss had to go, then with Penny withdrawing, what was the alternative?

I remember being shocked by Brown replacing Blair.

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 18:13

Believeitornot · 24/10/2022 16:58

Stop being weapons grade stupid.

lockdown was not a political issue - it was a public health one, being followed by many countries around the world (don’t say Sweden because they did lockdown of sorts FFS!).

Covid continues to be a nasty virus, as the numbers of people with long covid and the higher risk of cardiovascular issues even after mild symptoms attests.

Jesus fucking wept.

The problem with Rishi’s schemes was the cronyism (contracts for mates!), billions wasted on test and trace (they could have done it much more cheaply via local authorities) and epic levels of fraud by handing the furlough money to businesses which meant they could claim for people who were actually working or didn’t exist.

I love your 'weapons grade stupid' and I'm stealing that one.

However, that opportunists swindled the government facilitation of the furlough scheme is on those swindlers - it's not the government's fault.

Covid was an horrific bastard of an illness.

Local authorities refused to work mainly, as they have secure jobs and like to wfh and really enjoyed furlough.

yossell · 24/10/2022 18:16

What isn't democracy? That a self-selected unrepresentative, tiny group of people from a narrow, extreme right tiny demographic get to choose the leader of the country?

And they did so well last time...

AConservativeMember · 24/10/2022 18:18

As a member I’m frankly relieved at this point.

The members generally do not seem to grasp how the HoC works and want to choose their favourite with total disregard for the need to have the support of the majority of the house.
They should I know but lots that I know just don’t.

If it had gone to a vote this time, with Rishi, Penny &/or Boris I think I would’ve had to vote Rishi and I come from Team Boris originally. If you see one candidate has the support of 200ish MPs, you have to hope the rest will fall in line, put up or shut up and things can actually get done.
If you keep choosing the minority candidate, chaos in the house will follow.

Maybe the members are learning/have learnt something over the past few months. If they keep carping on about a coronation and wanting ‘their say’ we’ll know they haven’t!

The Team Boris and Penny MPs will have to compromise, the members need to too. Here’s hoping!

I don’t think he’s going to last long!
The gammons in the Tory party- of which there are many, are frothing at the idea of an Asian leading their party.
The comments on Twitter about Sunak are grim.
I don’t think it’s going to go well! .

Yet,you are quite happy to use the racist term, gammon.
