Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

Mordaunt's statement was really weird. Seemed worded to rile up the membership . . .

Tory MPs are easier to understand when you realise they all hate one another and see every colleague as a prop or obstacle to power.

PerkingFaintly · 24/10/2022 14:10

Good.

Unlike the Tory membership I'd have picked Rishi as least worst first time round, without having to live through the Truss debacle.

But stand by for incoming torrent of "The Tory party is obviously the true party of opportunity for appointing the UK's first PM of colour," from the hopeless Torybots, as though the last few months never happened...

Though TBF I can understand anyone wanting to pretend the last few months never happened.Shock

I'm not sure RICH being people's overwhelming impression of the PM is going to help him in the months ahead. We shall see!

Where are these word clouds from?

I just googled and the one for Starmer was terrible!

Boris and Rishi's word clouds side by side

I found two for Starmer

Not much positive in there. Sunak seems to be doing better bar Rich

Why the Starmer whataboutery?

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 14:34

Sunak at least has some skills to meet a crisis. We are definitely in one. Johnson makes a crisis, big difference.

I suppose first on the list is getting mortgage rates, and the cost of borrowing down. Very hard.

I also wonder about his party. They are completely ill disciplined, and in a mutinous mood. Does Sunak have the stead of Thatcher, or will he be like Major, bitten by the hard right of his party?

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 14:34

Seriously. It’s just information 🙄

Surprised it was so negative. I’d seem a few word clouds bandied about so googled. If you don’t like it tough - take it up with Starmer it’s his public image..

DuncinToffee · 24/10/2022 14:37

Sure Marsha Confused

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 14:39

Looks like we don’t get to hear Rishi’s speech then 🙄

Maybe it’s a protocol thing, he’s not PM until he’s been to see the King so for now it’s all “behind closed doors” party stuff.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 14:40

Why does it bug you so much?

I don’t care if people think he’s boring or useless. It’s very negative but I honestly couldn’t care less. I assume you don’t like seeing that so you have a go at a poster instead. Whatever

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 14:41

If you at both leaders neither are very charismatic. Sunak is a technocrat, he has none of the flamboyance of Johnson, and we don't know him.

The next election is not going to be personality driven. That would be mad. Neither leader shines on that front.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 14:42

A long time ago I posted I’d like to see Sunak v Starmer in a GE

It was far back, who knew what would happen to get here

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 14:46

Well I am definitely fit evidence driven competence instead of public policy driven by the need for special advisers to use alliteration. All of them need to be put in a cupboard.

Ready for Rishi...

Oh. Never mind.

Dweebie · 24/10/2022 14:47

Personally can't see that 'boring' is worse than 'rich'? I know lots of lovely, boring people! Agree none of the word clouds very positive though.

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 14:48

Sunak's weak points are that he is rich, and he is a poor speaker. Maybe he can improve the second one a bit. He can't change the first.

SleeplessInEngland · 24/10/2022 14:49

Word clouds are amusing but basically useless because they don't tell you salience of the perceptions or the effect they'd have on voting. People may have thought Johnson was a liar but, for a very long time, it didn't stop tories polling well.

Anway, Labour's attack plan is pretty simple now: a billionaire wants to cut your public services. Hunt had an easy time of it by appearing to come to the rescue but his intent, should he stay on as CX, is clear enough and Sunak will defiitely go along with it.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 14:53

I don’t really have a view on his speaking, weirdly I don’t feel I’ve heard enough, but I hope he doesn’t lose it as he did with Truss. He needs to be calmer.

I agree rich can be an unchangeable barrier which is a shame as it’s not relevant when it comes to aptitude.

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 14:57

Yes he has impatience in him with those less bright. Not a massive sin, but he will have to be more approachable to win an election, and my suggestion is that the reason you have not heard him too often is that he's not the best. But actually you can improve that even if he is not one of life's most enthused communicators.

We will all get a taste at PMQs.

hesbeingabitofadick · 24/10/2022 14:58

I wish sky would get a different guest. Boris Johnsons Wig Michael Fabricant is still wanging on...

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 24/10/2022 14:59

They used to keep Truss away from public speaking - for good reason. Hope its not the same with Sunak.

I didn't know that...that is a disgrace! Wink

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 15:01

I don't think you should underestimate just how scripted most politicians are. To the last word. So delivery is very important.

Johnson was different- far more likely to go off piste and be creative. It did make him very effective as a campaigner.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 15:04

There’s an excellent programme that analyses PMQs, they talk about the script and delivery. I love it and it’s made me realise a lot of it is getting a line that sticks with the public in focus groups later on.

But yes Johnson came up with a few that stuck and maybe they were his own
