Road incident

Hi. I know I let my anger run over me tonight, but I’m sick of this one ignorant rude young driver, who has done this a few times, not only to me but others.
driving up to my house, which is at the top of a very large hill. There is two give way stops halfway up the hill.
I have the right away as I’m coming up the hill. This girl, coming down the hill sees me, sits for a second, then decides to go. I’m driving around 20mph.
she knew I would need to stop and let her past, even though I had the right away.
I think she expected me to stop, but I just kept going. I just thought, she will need to reverse as I’m not moving. She stated beeping!
She pulled down the window and started screaming at me! Wtf! Saying I speed up. I just said, I had the right away and you saw me driving up the hill. I know I have pmt and crabit, but this really annoyed me!

Wtf is a "right away"? Sounds like something a waiter at a posh restaurant would say.

You knew what the op meant. You have a strange obsession with other peoples grammar.

FlissyPaps · 21/10/2022 23:34

Sorry OP but I’m pissing myself here, I’m from Yorkshire and when saying “right of way” it does sound like “right away” or “right ‘way”

Anyway😂 YANBU. It makes sense for vehicles traveling down hills to allow vehicles uphill to pass. She’s obviously just.

AdobeWanKenobi · 21/10/2022 23:51

There are a surprising amount of people who have never read the Highway Code and don’t know that wherever possible you should give way to traffic coming up hill.
Rule 155.
YANBU

thank you.

I used to live up a hill with a bit of a bend at the top. The amount of times I’ve been driving up it to find a car, whizzing round the corner on the wrong side and just barrelling on down toward me was untrue.
Im always staggered at the amount of people that don’t know that rule, but then, considering nobody seems to teach the basic ‘keep in the left lane unless overtaking’ either it’s probably not a surprise that nobody seems to know the hill advisories.

thank you, it’s an awful hill, especially in the snow. We are in Scotland, so bad winters here. When driving up in the winter, it’s ok if you get a straight run driving up. But if you have to stop because someone doesn’t give way to the traffic, then your stuck.

Good for you op, she’ll hopefully pay more attention to the signs before she causes an accident.

HoobleDooble · 22/10/2022 00:28

I was taught to give 'uphill priority' when I learned to drive 30 years ago. There does seem to be an increase in selfish and rude drivers these days.

Grumpybutfunny · 22/10/2022 00:34

Did you speed up tho? It sounds like she judged your speed and thought she could make it through. It also makes me think, as she was the one who could squeeze through it is you who increased your speed to try and trap her.

Let her get on with it if you want to drive slowly and carefully just let her be. I've been both the idiot in the company car (scuff it all you want it's not my money and the company expected it), the young high powered BMW driver which was a lot of fun. I'm currently being careful with my new baby as she is Matt black and will show any stone chips etc

I very much doubt she will have called the police even if she has a dash cam your more likely to become a viral Tik tok!

Voted YABU purely because it's 'Right of way'

How embarrassing for you to admit that.

I always wonder about the priority of priorities in this but never actually look it up.

What if you're going up hill but the obstacle is on your side requiring you to move into the oncoming lane?

oh I must admit I did speed up, I’m embarrassed to say. I must have went from 20mph to 23?
she definitely put her foot down herself. Knowing full well I would need to stop to let her past. Just another impatient prat on the road. If she couldn’t squeeze past, she would have had to reverse back up the hill, as I sure wasn’t going back. As I said I’m very calm and considerate on the road.
if I’m coming up the hill and see a bus who has to stop, I’ll usually flash him to go.

I try to comply with right of ways so it pisses me off when others push through. This happened one night when two cars decided to overtake a parked car on their side rather than wait for me to drive past.

I was sufficiently irritated to stop quite near to the parked car so they had to slow down and thought I'd finish off my displeasure with a few beeps of my horn.

Unfortunately the second car transpired to be a police car. As I drove past, they did a u-turn, sirens on and pulled me over for incorrect use of the horn. I was briefly tempted to point out it was my right of way but went for gushing apologies and was let off with a lecture.

Just in case anyone would like to learn from my mortification, it is not appropriate under the Highway Code to beep drivers abusing their right of way. Ahem.

Badgirlriri · 22/10/2022 10:34

Cringe for all the posters correcting OP’s grammar and playing dumb “what does right away mean?!” 🙄 you all sound so childish.

Eatmycake3333 · 22/10/2022 10:58

Badgirlriri · Today 10:34
thank you. Oh people knew exactly what I meant. I should have studied my post for grammar and spelling mistakes before I posted it last night. Lol 😂 I’m just that used to saying “right away.” It must be a regional thing. Typical mn. People can be very rude here. They wouldn’t belittle like that in real life?

OP posts:
Eatmycake3333 · 22/10/2022 10:58

I’m actually cringing half of the posters don’t know the Highway Code!

Is this road near a zoo by any chance?

ButIamBatman · 22/10/2022 11:42

I have a couple of these priority to oncoming vehicle chicanes near me and no-one pays attention to them. I've a massive car and if it's my priority I just drive right at them and make them back up.

well quite rightly so. You have the right away. Let them reverse.

Yes

Where I live there is goodwill both ways otherwise you would sit waiting to come down for a long time

I do too! Having a huge car is great because people move out the way.

40andfit · 22/10/2022 12:03

There is no concept of right of way in the highway code. What you both did was wrong.

Had you reached the line of parked cars before they started the overtake?

You say you stopped close as you could to the line to force them to a slow down so I'm assuming not.

If they started the manoeuvre before you reached the obstruction then it was their right of way, regardless which side the parked cards were on. Even if you have to stop to let them complete the manoeuvre.

Check the highway code. Rule 163.
