Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Can we not have the repeat lie of Reuters and the Telegraph yesterday. Johnson claims to have 100 backers, 43 that are currently silent.

Well only ONE person from the 60 that make up the ERG is not keen on Boris. Baker whom has ambitions of his own to become PM, and is a well known Gove disruptor in the ERG most of us would have been more surprised if he had come out for Boris.
In fact it looks like many of the ERG are indeed backing Boris.
So much so that Boris now has the 100 backers he needs:

www.reuters.com/world/uk/boris-johnson-has-100-backers-uk-leadership-contest-sunday-times-citing-source-2022-10-22/

Braverman for Sunak as well now.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 13:49

Ouch. Braverman for Sunak. That is bad

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 13:49

And ‘over 100 declared’ is pure PR until we have names.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 13:50

I said 150 for Sunak- I'm revising that. Closer to 200 by Monday

cakeorwine · 23/10/2022 13:53

It would be a bit embarrassing if the total number of declared supporters for Sunak ,Johnson and Mordaunt plus the number of undeclared supporters Johnson claims to have was more than the number of Tory MPs

Suella Braverman backs Rishi Sunak

She says Boris Johnson was 'right leader at right time' but it is no time for 'sentimentality'

'We are in dire straits. We need unity, stability and efficiency. Rishi is the only candidate that fits bill & I am proud to support him'

Gutted for Boris. Gutted. Absolutely gutted.

Reuters and the Telegraph have impeccable sources and can not legally print anything that is a fabrication. So I find your whole head in the sand denial thing somewhat strange. Reuters are always the first to know, and in fact it was common knowledge last night lex

Secondly it does not matter how many backers Sunak gets because it will be the members that will choose the leader. And Sunak has not a chance in a hell as he well knows.

I know you are desperate but posting inaccurate claims is not going to change the outcome.

Keir Starmer leads Boris Johnson by only 3%.

At this moment, which of the following do voters think would be the better Prime Minister for the UK?

Starmer v Johnson:
Starmer 42%
Johnson 39%

Starmer v Sunak:
Starmer 44%
Sunak 33%

Starmer v Mordaunt:
Starmer 49%
Mordaunt 22%

Not impossible that Sunak could make up the ground though in 2 years.

Are they repeating a claim from Johnson or do they have actual knowledge of the number of undeclared MPs?

You must be truly desperate to drag up that old debunked chestnut

I was disputing borntobequiet's claim - she dragged it up. Why did she mention the Queen? Is she desperate?

Starmer was cleared

Not relevant to my post or the point I was making.

Starmer was able to prove that he was not partying, and he was keeping the rules as they were at the time., so it's very relevant that your smear attempt should be challenged.

You brought it up. It may have been an attempt to refute someone else's claim, but if you have to resort to lying smears to do so, you're obviously desperate.

Johnson and Sunak were breaking the rules. They were therefore fined. That's not a lying smear, that's fact.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 13:58

It was withdrawn Kissing, and if it's been restated, Reuters will have ensured it is qualified as not being fact. They are a reputable news agency.

The lie was due to the source. No declaration of the 100 shortly later meant it was withdrawn and corrected.

They can print what they are told.

However that doesn't mean what they've been told is a) true b) people won't change mind before the actual vote.

Johnson could get the 100 still. Equally he might not.

Anyone saying its a done deal is just lying.

On that note I saw a journalist on twitter earlier today commenting that Johnson was the only politician they called a liar that they didn't have to pass the legal team first...

He still needs to get a hundred MPs for his weirdo cult membership to have a chance to vote for him.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 14:00

I think you are forgetting that Boris Johnson is the only leader with a mandate from the people, he is the only person to have secured legitimacy from the nation.

After the Truss debacle, I think many MPs will be looking to protect themselves from annihilation - which is guaranteed with Sunak. I can see Sunak going exactly the same way as Truss, he is just as weak sadly.

I think its guaranteed.

I don't think its a Sunak v Johnson thing.

Mainly cos I'm not a fantacist.

Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?
LexMitior · 23/10/2022 14:06

I am a just a political observer. Sunak is playing this better than Boris. I've spent most of my life working with politics and Sunak is doing a better job.

As it is, I said 150 by Monday. I've revised that towards 200. That isn't because I'm pro Sunak, or even a Tory. Johnson is an impressive politician but he has a very significant flaw. That flaw is that his exceptionalism overrides anything, laws, reality, the City, judges, colleagues... that flaw is just huge. And when cold economic reality is a problem, that just isn't going to be enough unless you have a top class team. Johnson used to be quite good at building those, but he failed to do it last night, and his undeclared team (his supporters) want him to show a kind of quality where he had broad support.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 14:07

You don't seem to understand that party whips, 1922 committee, party board members, vice chairs are not allowed to declare publicly but are allowed to vote. So that will be why they have reached the threshold comfortably.

Ben Wallace, Nadim Zahawi, James Cleverley, Alok Sharma, Chris Heaton, Simon Clarke are the big beasts of the party and very influential - ALL are backing Boris.

Very, very few senior Tories are backing Sunak, that is a very interesting development in the last 24 hours.

Tanith · 23/10/2022 14:07

"I can see Sunak going exactly the same way as Truss, he is just as weak sadly."

He's not as incompetent. He does at least take advice and he has a good relationship with his staff. He stands the best chance of saving some of those Conservative seats in the GE.
My experience is that people are utterly sick of Johnson's antics. Truss blew up far too early for him (she was even more useless than they'd planned) and the optics of him being on holiday (again!) when it happened have not done him any favours at all.

cakeorwine · 23/10/2022 14:08

A big declaration of support for Boris Johnson from foreign secretary James Cleverly, as he said he will vote for him if he stands in Monday’s vote.
Cleverly, who was education secretary for a month under Johnson, and a minister previous to that, said that he thinks Johnson has “learned his lessons from his time” in Downing Street.
“[He] will ensure the focus is on the needs of the country from day 1,” he said.

Learned his lesson? Johnson will always be Johnson.

So just to be clear you are saying you don't think Boris has secured 100 backers?

Lets here you say publicly right now, if you are so cool with your political observations. Are you claiming that Boris won't make the minimum?
