Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Sources close to Johnson robustly denying that some donors have been told he won’t run. “Nonsense” they say. Certainly, some donors are urging him not to. This is becoming existential now l

I've been hearing from MPs and civil servants that, whatever happens with the next govt, James Cleverly is impressing at the foreign office. "There is no question to which moving him is a good answer," says one veteran.

You will recall who has been Foreign Secretary since 2016...

Johnson, Hunt, Raab, Truss...

That’s surprising. But heartening. At least one of them appears to be halfway competent.

Boris is 58 isn’t he? Says date of birth 1964 on wiki

That's the job that Mordaunt wants.

I doubt she could point to the Isle of Man on a map.

Chatting with an octogenarian Telegraph reader at work today, he finds the whole thing mildly entertaining but said this whole 'best of three' malarkey was damaging to the country and they needed to be sensible this time round.

DuncinToffee · 22/10/2022 21:18

Hodges tweeted that some Tory donors being told Boris will not run.

It was in the Daily Mail yesterday and the Telegraph that they were to meet for talks.

More Johnson BS.

Sunak looks to be heading to 150 by Monday. Johnson looks stuck at under 70. Not good for him

A meeting between Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson has been taking place tonight, two separate sources have told the BBC.

Boris Johnson's campaign has "over 100 names" Tory MP AT Bren4Bassetlaw tells Stephen Nolan on bbc5live. "It is significantly more than have been reported. By midday it had hit 100."

Yeah ok!

Dave20 · 22/10/2022 21:50

“It is very hard to believe that the right to paid holiday, is an absolute right..”

These words are from Jacob Rees Mogg. There’s a YouTube video, he said this in the commons.

The Tories ( most of them anyway) want to take away our rights. This lot would have us mugs working day and night for peanuts whilst they earn a good living , along with their company boss mates.

Sunak and Truss openly want to ban workers striking.

Its scary that people would vote them in again.. then again their core voters are white , retired, middle class, right wing, from the Home Counties who probably don’t give a shit about working people struggling.

Join a union. Try and get this lot out. Soon.

Johnson looks much older than his years in that photo.

I think he looks his age but like someone who's been drinking way too much and not sleeping. He really doesn't take care of himself.

Dave20 · 22/10/2022 21:52

The only good thing about Boris, is he’s slightly more left wing than some of the others. Maybe that’s down to Carries influence.

It’s bloody saying something when Boris is the lesser of the remaining evils.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 21:53

Hm. It's like Johnson's 100. Suspect. Johnson grandly announced that Rishi could be his chancellor. So who gets anything out of them meeting?

TBF (not that in his case I want to be) I wonder how much sleep he'd had when the image of him on the phone was taken?

He was probably lobbying/taking soundings remotely early yesterday prior to travelling, then there was the overnight Punta Cana-Antigua-Gatwick flight which is about twelve hours in total, sat in what from some images looked like an economy or economy plus seat. When he hit the ground today looks like it was straight into lobbying mode, not off home for a nap.

I think with the best will in the world more than a few people would look a bit frayed around the edges after that, and he looks a bit frayed at the best of times........

Johnson's always looked a mess. He doesn't look particularly old for his age but he doesn't look healthy.

OP posts:
TomPinch · 22/10/2022 22:03

Johnson hasn't publicly said that he's running. And there's no decent indication that he's actually got the support of 100 MPs.

I think he's taking soundings but hasn't got the numbers.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 22:03

I get it. Apparently this is Johnson doing his shit or bust move, because he hasn't enough of his own MPs, he's asking for a joint ticket.

He's been asking for that since Friday. Nothing new, except he's trying to avoid being humiliated. If he wins, he will not have control over his MPs but Sunak will.

Poker stuff.

TomPinch · 22/10/2022 22:04

Bookies' odds on Johnson are lengthening too.

Has Sunak even said he’s running?

sunnydaytoday0 · 22/10/2022 22:09

Even if Sunak wins with a large number of votes and it doesn't go to a members' vote, I just don't see how he's going to unite his party. The same would apply to Johnson.

TomPinch · 22/10/2022 22:15

Tory voting intention by leader.

Johnson will narrow the gap to 10% behind Lab and increase the Tory vote by 10% (or, 10% of UK voters need their heads examined.)
