Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Hmm, yes I’ve just seen that Chris Mason has clarified that it is not 100+ publicly declared.

Hmmph · 22/10/2022 15:11

Why are BBC making it breaking news as if it was true? I thought they had names no just someone saying it (who is clearly trying to get support and scare off others).

When Rishi reached 100 there was no breaking news and they waited until they had a confirmed list of names before saying it.

I love the BBC. I don't understand why they love Boris so much (is it because he makes more news? Or something more sinister..?)

BBC, and the media in general, are addicted to Boris Johnson and the mess he creates. They live for the fucking drama and I think many journalists are complicit in this huge mess.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 22/10/2022 15:18

Boris Johnson now has more than 100 backers among Conservative MPs, according to a campaign source. This is less than the number of publicly declared backers for Johnson, which stand at 49.

It is just propaganda, isn’t it? It seems the majority of his supposed backers are anonymous. That seems decidedly suspicious. But certainly gives a new spin to the ‘shy tories’ phenomenon.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 15:20

Ha!

Now wait for the official list of Boris backers as James Dudderidge has to ring around everyone again and ask them to declare public support.

I reckon there will be a wait on that

sunnydaytoday0 · 22/10/2022 15:23

Boris won't declare he's standing unless he's 100% certain he has the numbers and the names. And not just about 100 but probably more in case a few change their mind and he ends up with 99 and ends up looking (more) silly.

Pull the other one. If he had 100 real backers they would shouting that from the rooftops, not whispering to the BBC

LONDON, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Boris Johnson has 100 backers and could be on the ballot to succeed Liz Truss as Britain's prime minister, Sunday Times Chief Political Commentator Tim Shipman said on Twitter, citing an unnamed source close to the former prime minister.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 15:28

Yes because like everything connected with Johnson it's a big fat lie.

He's been back in it for a few hours and he's right back to lying immediately. Probably done more harm than good however for his campaign.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 15:30

@Clavinova - that's the press release written by the "unnamed source" aka Dudderidge. A press release quoted by Reuters with no names attached is worth zip.

Chris Mason:
On seeing this briefing, one Conservative MP reckons it’s ‘hogwash’ that Mr Johnson has so many backers not willing to say so publicly. ‘It’s clearly nonsense.’

I hope that’s true but frankly if he has got his 100 backers and they do not want to go public it is because they are ashamed of themselves and so they should be IMO.

sunnydaytoday0 · 22/10/2022 15:33

Chris Mason:
Well, the publicly-declared number of backers is much, much lower and — bluntly — his track record when it comes to truth is patchy.
These races are all about generating momentum, even a sense of inevitability.

Understatement of the century!

It's ‘hogwash’ if you want it to be. I don't mind Johnson or Sunak.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 15:38

I remain convinced that Johnson is not that popular with his colleagues. Sunak needs to be generating 150 plus and then the mysterious Johnson 100 will melt away.

scaredoff · 22/10/2022 15:57

100 is less the 49? 😲

No wonder the Tories have screwed the economy so badly.

Or they don't want to rule themselves out of Rishi Sunak's cabinet if Boris Johnson hasn't yet formally declared he will run for the leadership?

Croque · 22/10/2022 16:15

I reckon Carrie's back in charge of running his communications! It is a bit of fun. Let us see if we can get Rishi to back down before he has even thrown his hat in. Nadine is obviously game too.

baroqueandblue · 22/10/2022 16:16

Such integrity. No wonder the country's on the up and up.

Oh, wait... 🙄

Such integrity

Did we ever find out why Keir Starmer tried to cover up how many people were at the beer and curry evening in Durham? Starmer told LBC there were around 6 people with him - the police say 16 (17 in total). Maths not his strong subject?

GreatHonkingPudding · 22/10/2022 16:28

Word cloud from the front page of ConservativeHome.

Boris Johnson is not that popular with anybody.

This situation is not funny but this tweet did make me laugh.

You really want to go there while your inglorious leader is still the subject of an inquiry into serially misleading Parliament, and by all accounts there's enough evidence on him to sink a plague ship?!

Clavinova · 22/10/2022 16:41

Why not? Starmer clearly lied even if he wasn't found to have broken the rules - the numbers connection is clearly relevant to this thread as well.

sunnydaytoday0 · 22/10/2022 16:47

The problem with a strategy of briefing that they've definitely got 100 votes when in fact they don't and end up not managing to, is that they end up looking very very silly. It would be more lies to add to the list.

Boris must be in the shit if Clav is back scraping the bottom of the beer barrel. 🤣🤣

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/10/2022 17:08

I'd somehow managed to miss these threads up until now.

Delighted to see @ILeclercreturn and others from previous political threads.

Even clavinova has been reactivated!
