Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Boris is not looking to outdo Rishi. He is looking for the magic hundred. The rest will take care of itself. Well, in the short run anyway.

I think that’s what makes me so angry. In a parliamentary democracy, it should be the MPs who decide who governs. We don’t directly elect our prime ministers. We should arguably have a written constitution.

% of the public declarations so far:

Sunak 60%
Johnson 28%
Mordaunt 12%

So of the 142 left to declare, Johnson needs 35% of them to back him just to get on the ballot

John Rentoul at JohnRetoul
He already has 16 anon backers, so if they’re good, of the remaining 115 (deducting Sunak & Mordaunt’s anon backers), he needs 29, or 25%

Touch and go. And he’ll need a margin to compensate for the ones who say they’ll back him but won’t on the day

If it's tight will Johnson risk the humiliation of 99 votes?

Endlesssummer2022 · 22/10/2022 13:46

Sunak is smiley but he is also on the right of the party. He will be comfortable dismantling employment rights.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 13:51

Sunak is just looking to crush Johnson by weight of nominations. If Mordaunt picks up the remainder, Johnson will not be on the ticket at all.

Understand Boris is currently talking on the phone to key parliamentary allies. But I'm told the decision of Steve Barclay and Lord Frost to publicly endorse Rishi has come as a significant blow.

Hes considering bottling it...

I beg to differ slightly, they are continuing the 'magic roundabout' where each turn shovels more money into ERG and hedge funders pockets. They will keep it spinning as long as they can until eventially it will fall off it's axis and the Disaster Capitalist (vultures) will swoop in.

Dave20 · 22/10/2022 14:06

Agree ref Sunak. Remember he wants to ban people striking.

Some truly awful numbers for the Tories when you dig down into some of the polling.

Do wonder if Johnson, as he looks around his room of close supporters today, will pause and wonder how he ended up leading the Addams Family faction within the Party.

Talking of resignations but this is mildly interesting:

Asylum chief quits Home Office as Labour attacks ‘chaos and confusion’ in department. (Independent headline)

apparently it was 'acrimonious' but to me it suggests that as a Civil servant with (I gather ) considerable expertise (s)he realises that things are getting pretty bad and that international condemnation for the Home Office 'activities' is incoming.
It can only be for a short time that failings to follow international norms by the UK government will be permitted.

Going in for seconds within weeks does feel greedy and there are backers who would shy away from him for that reason alone. I suppose if he comes out with a speech about letting the others have a go then it will become obvious that he fell short of the hundred.

titchy · 22/10/2022 14:37

If he does decide not to run who would he suggest his supporters back?

titchy · 22/10/2022 14:37

PM?

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 14:42

@sunnydaytoday0 - that is because their bills and mortgages. If your government have made decisions that will cost you hundreds more pounds a month, and you are a working person, you won't vote for them.

scaredoff · 22/10/2022 14:59

Guido also supplies a probable best case scenario for Johnson.

What makes you think that, and that he's not just making up random numbers?

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 15:01

Chris Mason reporting that Boris has secured 100. There must have been a sudden rush of nominations!

That's it then isn't it? He goes to the crazy members, they vote for him, he's PM again and we're in trouble.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 15:06

Mm. I think you should wait because it's not like Johnson doesn't lie his arse off to the media.

Words · 22/10/2022 15:07

True. But heart sinking all the same.

sunnydaytoday0 · 22/10/2022 15:07

On seeing this briefing, one Conservative MP reckons it’s ‘hogwash’ that Mr Johnson has so many backers not willing to say so publicly. ‘It’s clearly nonsense.’

Is the above accurate??

Hmmph · 22/10/2022 15:11

Why are BBC making it breaking news as if it was true? I thought they had names no just someone saying it (who is clearly trying to get support and scare off others).

When Rishi reached 100 there was no breaking news and they waited until they had a confirmed list of names before saying it.

I love the BBC. I don't understand why they love Boris so much (is it because he makes more news? Or something more sinister..?)

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 15:12

It's so transparent.

Shock and awe - Boris is coming. Boris on a plane. Boris has the votes if he chooses.

Pull the other one. If he had 100 real backers they would shouting that from the rooftops, not whispering to the BBC.
