To ask why all the chicken thigh hate?

I pretty much exclusively cook with chicken thighs, mainly because they're cheaper, but also because they have more flavour than breasts. Occasionally I might buy breasts and dice them for stir fries or fajitas but that's v occasional.

Today I went to buy some chicken for kebabs for dinner, obviously looked for thighs. Did I find any? Nope: breasts as far as the eye could see. Six breasts. Four breasts. Two breasts. Breast mini fillets. Diced breast. Breast strips.

Two measly sad-looking packs of 3/4 thighs, use by date today.

Where are all the thighs going, or have we now managed to genetically engineer giant-breasted legless chickens?

Because it belongs on a chicken that never left a barn with 10,000 others, was starved of food and water 24 hours (at least) before being roughly forced in to a plastic crate on its way to be hung upside down and dropped in to boiling hot electrified water?

Excellently said.

@crumpetswithjam I'm vegetarian, my family aren't! So it's one adult and two small children. Then it will do a stir fry and a curry or pie for DH and some bits for the kids in something.
I don't have a supply of Mumsnet chickens that feed the 5000 I'm afraid!

Bestcatmum · 19/10/2022 10:13

I've been vegetarian for years but when i did eat meat I loved chicken thighs, detested breast which is invariably dry. Thighs are much more flavoursome.

Benjispruce4 · 19/10/2022 10:15

A medium chicken will serve me and DH and two teenage DDs. A roast dinner would only be a few slices of chicken each. DH might have one of the legs too. I then take all the remaining meat off for sandwiches the next day.

inappropriateraspberry · 19/10/2022 10:15

Oh, and as a vegetarian I do not think this thread is the place to lecture people on their food choices. You don't want to eat it, fine, but others do.
I never tell people that their sausages used to be little piggies! I, shock horror, can appreciate a meal with meat that looks nice or smells good. Doesn't mean I want to eat it though.

Benjispruce4 · 19/10/2022 10:16

If you’re eating a whole chicken between two you might want to practise portion control.

Eh? None of the bits are inedible. They're all delicious.

You eat the bones?

I read this out to my husband and now he's wandering around with a stupid, dreamy smile on his face.

I actually spat my tea at this one 😂

(I know everyone on MN says that, but I really did!)

RosieLemonadeAndSugar · 19/10/2022 10:37

I tried thighs but I just can't like them, I much prefer a breast.

oldwhyno · 19/10/2022 11:11

Big thigh fan here. I'll take breast if that's what's on offer, but generally would rather get my hands on thighs.

AntsGoMarchingOneByOne · 19/10/2022 11:27

I love chicken thighs! Wings are even better.
Chicken breasts are the most boring meat ever.

Lougle · 19/10/2022 11:43

Benjispruce4 · 19/10/2022 06:52

Thigh fillets are boneless. On the bone is cheaper.

Yes, so to compare breast with thigh, it has to be boneless and skinless.

Benjispruce4 · 19/10/2022 16:06

This thread has made me make pulled chicken burgers for tonight using roasted thighs.🤗

crumpetswithjam · 19/10/2022 16:26

I've just cleaned up and deboned a pack of 8 decent sized thighs that cost me £2.60 in Sainsbury's. Took me five minutes.

Worth watching a tutorial and having a go, because it's much, much easier than you might think (if you have a sharp knife) and saves so much money. You can cut off all the fat and any gristly bits, just leaving the soft meat. You can even take the skin off, if you're not into it.

That pack of 8 thighs is easily enough for two meals for DH and I.

So 65p per portion.

No grisly bits in my pulled chicken!

From the Tesco site:

Breast fillets £5.75/kg, Thigh fillets £6.00/kg

You are just paying a lot extra for the labour to take the skin off and the bone out - they do a crap job - honestly - I save myself the money by doing it myself - a few minutes - some people are so lazy. If they want to pay for the labour that's their choice - they are not paying the extra for the chicken. I've never bought thighs filleted.

inappropriateraspberry · 19/10/2022 20:53

Thigh is def cheaper than breast in Lidl.

thenewduchessoflapland · 19/10/2022 21:02

I'm now buying chicken thighs because quite frankly the cost of chicken breast is ridiculous at the moment;I can't afford £8 for a large packet of chicken breasts when I can buy 4 good sized chicken legs for £2.20.

Btw a good paired of poultry scissors that are kept sharpened makes light work of bone in chicken

Wetblanket78 · 20/10/2022 00:24

Georgyporky · 18/10/2022 18:20

Unlike georgarina, I've never eaten dog hair.
But if thighs taste like it, I might try it.

Haha😂😂😂she doesn't know what she's missing. The thighs definitely have more flavour. The breasts are quite bland unless well seasoned.

CallieQ · 20/10/2022 00:46

Love thighs

Northbynorthbreast · 20/10/2022 01:04

Find your local halal butchers. Excellent range and much cheaper than the supermarkets. You will have your thighs!!
