To ask why all the chicken thigh hate?

I pretty much exclusively cook with chicken thighs, mainly because they're cheaper, but also because they have more flavour than breasts. Occasionally I might buy breasts and dice them for stir fries or fajitas but that's v occasional.

Today I went to buy some chicken for kebabs for dinner, obviously looked for thighs. Did I find any? Nope: breasts as far as the eye could see. Six breasts. Four breasts. Two breasts. Breast mini fillets. Diced breast. Breast strips.

Two measly sad-looking packs of 3/4 thighs, use by date today.

Where are all the thighs going, or have we now managed to genetically engineer giant-breasted legless chickens?

I just buy whole chickens and butcher them when I get home. Generally not much more than two chicken breasts and then I get the rest for free.

PickAChew · 18/10/2022 17:49

We've been buying thighs for years - ds2 loves them and won't eat breast meat. Unlike breast, they're really hard to overcook, too.

Bobbins36 · 18/10/2022 17:55

Thighs are so much nicer! Chicken breasts are boring and dry.

LynneBenfield · 18/10/2022 17:57

I buy thighs and drumsticks too, OP. Much better value as well as more succulent and flavourful. What’s not to like?!

crumpetswithjam · 18/10/2022 17:01

Eh? None of the bits are inedible. They're all delicious.

This. Maybe she means the bones, but then I always buy skinless boneless thigh fillets. Still cheaper and nicer than breast.

Sestriere · 18/10/2022 17:58

I’ve always bought thighs for most recipes although I do think they lend themselves better to longer, slower cooking. You don’t need to trim anything as it melts into the sauce or gravy.

georgarina · 18/10/2022 17:58

I just don't like the taste. They're fatty and have kind of a dog hair taste to me...it's hard to explain, but I can't stand them.

DH will only eat breast meat. Fine, but he finds it very hard to get his head round the idea that others do actually like thighs / dark meat. I think MIL brainwashed him against it.

There's a nandos burger that is made with thigh meat , I always have this if I go , much better flavour imo.

AriettyHomily · 18/10/2022 18:03

I'm a hater, also don't like legs. Thugs have a horrible texture, don't like the brown bits and bones and skin aren't my thing.

Season0fTheWitch · 18/10/2022 18:06

I'd never used thighs before we got hello fresh, I had just never considered buying them. Much less faff than breast too, especially with how much gristley shite you have to cut out of them

TenoringBehind · 18/10/2022 18:08

I only buy thighs. Breast is dry and flavourless.

Shockmeafter · 18/10/2022 18:08

It’s the patriarchy. Men prefer breasts.

closingloop · 18/10/2022 18:09

I've got loads in the oven right now - bunged some chopped onion, garlic and butter in the oven for 10 mins, but a spice rub on the chicken thighs (took the skin off) added dry rice, stock & chicken and back in the oven for 50minutes. Smells amazing.

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 18:10

Hate? I love chicken thighs and it’s all I buy. Tasty and good value. Always plenty in Aldi.

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 18:12

@AriettyHomily i remove the skin and if we’ll cooked, the bone falls out. Just tasty, succulent chicken. I’ve converted DH who used to be a breast man.😉

EstellaRijnveld · 18/10/2022 18:14

Any meat on the bone is the Best thing to cook curries with as there’s much re flavour. You get a natural stock with the bone which adds to the depth of flavour.

Wetblanket78 · 18/10/2022 18:19

I prefer thighs my son will only eat the thighs part. Get breasts if I'm doing breaded chicken. But usually get a free range full chicken from aldi which does us at least 3 meals. Also has more taste and better texture than chicken breasts.

I cook it upside down in the slow cooker so the breast part isn't chewy. Usually do something to keep in the freezer like a curry rather than keeping for 3 days.

Thighs are more fatty but fat is filling. So your less likely to feel hungry later on.

Unlike georgarina, I've never eaten dog hair.
But if thighs taste like it, I might try it.

Because it belongs on a chicken that never left a barn with 10,000 others, was starved of food and water 24 hours (at least) before being roughly forced in to a plastic crate on its way to be hung upside down and dropped in to boiling hot electrified water?

Mine are free range and never starved

🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗. I really fancy a chicken thigh curry with fresh chillies, absolutely gorgeous! You've made me really hungry.

Goldsand · 18/10/2022 18:28

I hate them. They are gross, taste fatty and have a horrible texture.

Tulipomania · 18/10/2022 18:29

I only buy chicken thighs or whole chickens. Thighs are much more forgiving to cook as they don't dry out & have a better flavour. I buy boneless organic ones.

However, there seems to have been a shortage recently. No idea why - you would think there would be equal supplies of thighs & breasts.

DH & I are working our way slowly through a whole chicken at the moment.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/10/2022 18:31

My son has some sensory issues which mean he only likes breast. So we get that!

ReneBumsWombats · 18/10/2022 18:32

breasts as far as the eye could see. Six breasts. Four breasts. Two breasts.

I read this out to my husband and now he's wandering around with a stupid, dreamy smile on his face.
