To ask why all the chicken thigh hate?

I pretty much exclusively cook with chicken thighs, mainly because they're cheaper, but also because they have more flavour than breasts. Occasionally I might buy breasts and dice them for stir fries or fajitas but that's v occasional.

Today I went to buy some chicken for kebabs for dinner, obviously looked for thighs. Did I find any? Nope: breasts as far as the eye could see. Six breasts. Four breasts. Two breasts. Breast mini fillets. Diced breast. Breast strips.

Two measly sad-looking packs of 3/4 thighs, use by date today.

Where are all the thighs going, or have we now managed to genetically engineer giant-breasted legless chickens?

I much prefer thighs too they are much less dry than breasts

AuntieMarys · 18/10/2022 17:29

I always buy thighs, never breasts

Panauchocolat25 · 18/10/2022 17:31

Having chicken thighs tonight for dinner! I always used to have breast but recently they have been really poor - full of water, rubbery and tough. Chicken thighs are cheaper, tastier and juicy from the fat. Full convert!

Because it belongs on a chicken that never left a barn with 10,000 others, was starved of food and water 24 hours (at least) before being roughly forced in to a plastic crate on its way to be hung upside down and dropped in to boiling hot electrified water?

You think chicken thighs come from different chickens which get treated worse?

Or does it just not matter what everyone else is talking about- you only use the topic as a vague jumping off point for the odd rant you want to post?

DisforDarkChocolate · 18/10/2022 17:32

In my Tesco they are now always selling out when I used to get them most weeks. It's bloody annoying.

Saltywalruss · 18/10/2022 17:33

Hate?

Dahlietta · 18/10/2022 17:34

I don't get how the fact that they were sold out implies hatred? Grin

pointythings · 18/10/2022 17:34

I love chicken thigh. It's pretty much the only chicken I use, so much more flavour and doesn't go dry. You do sometimes need to check for fat and splinters of bone from poor processing, but it's worth it.

Because there was hardly any space for thigh meat, just a shelf. Whole bloody fridge full of chicken tits.

It's not the sold-out-ness, it's the lack of space they're given on the shelf in comparison to breast.

As for the vegan; I'm not sure this thread is for you. I very much doubt you'll convert anybody with your ranting.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 18/10/2022 17:37

I don't like the texture, it's sort of slimy

reigatecastle · 18/10/2022 17:37

I just don't like chicken thighs. I know they are cheaper but it's not worth it for me.

Although when we have a turkey at Christmas we do use every part of it, including the thighs in a curry.

FelicityFidget · 18/10/2022 17:37

I've got thighs tonight. Cooked on the bone in a tandoori marinade. They are blimming delish!

Last nights breast was lush too tho, coated in paxo and baked until crispy.

Mmmmm chicken 🐔

Dahlietta · 18/10/2022 17:40

Ah, I see about the shelf space. Still, if they were sold out, perhaps the supermarkets are predicting hatred that just isn't there and they deserve more space!

lurchermummy · 18/10/2022 17:40

I always buy thighs but they are more expensive now. And I wouldn't buy or eat Halal meat on principle.

Ragwort · 18/10/2022 17:42

Can anyone answer this question..I always used to buy 'chicken supreme' joints breast of chicken with the wing bone and skin attached .... why are these so hard to get now? What happens to all the chicken skin from the packs of breasts that are everywhere? Confused.

AnybodyAnywhere · 18/10/2022 17:43

Many years ago you used to be able to but Chicken breast portions with bone in and skin on, they were really lovely, haven’t seen them for years though. I find the skinless, boneless breasts these days often have an unpleasant texture and no flavour. More likely these days I’ll buy a whole chicken and cut it up.

Sparklingbrook · 18/10/2022 17:43

I don't like chicken thighs. DH did a curry at the weekend and I was really looking forward to it, then realised it was thigh meat. Yuk. Weird taste and texture, and danger of fatty bits.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/10/2022 17:44

Because they're absolutely disgusting and will make you grow a beard, your children to become short, dark haired and decidedly average at everything before only being able to get a place at an old polytechnic, and what's more, having them in your basket will make you look lower class.

( Do you think that worked? Are the rich buggers walking away from the cheaper food before they cause a big enough spike in demand to make the price double for everybody - like the fuckers did for scrag end, oxtail, pork neck and lamb shanks?)

skyeisthelimit · 18/10/2022 17:44

I don't like thigh meat and I never eat meat on the bone. I always cook chicken breasts in foil, with some herbs and oil, they never dry out , they taste lovely.

Yeah, I prefer thighs, although legs are the best.

I don't faff around with them; I like chicken on the bone and with the skin.
