To ask why all the chicken thigh hate?

I pretty much exclusively cook with chicken thighs, mainly because they're cheaper, but also because they have more flavour than breasts. Occasionally I might buy breasts and dice them for stir fries or fajitas but that's v occasional.

Today I went to buy some chicken for kebabs for dinner, obviously looked for thighs. Did I find any? Nope: breasts as far as the eye could see. Six breasts. Four breasts. Two breasts. Breast mini fillets. Diced breast. Breast strips.

Two measly sad-looking packs of 3/4 thighs, use by date today.

Where are all the thighs going, or have we now managed to genetically engineer giant-breasted legless chickens?

Don't you mean chicken thigh "love" not "hate"

If there are hardly any left then surely it means people love them and are buying them, so only breast left

🤔

Breast are so dry and shite! Thighs have much more flavour and don't dry out

This is how I feel but I am very much in the minority among my peers! Although I rarely eat meat now, so I can't remember the last time I bought chicken.

Dynamicdinosaur · 18/10/2022 18:36

You can’t casserole either breasts. They end up dry and stringy, breast for stir frieds, kebabs and curries. Thigh for roasting and for casseroling

SoopaFreek · 18/10/2022 18:38

Thighs are fatty and sinewy. Muscles and tendons.. yuck, greasy fatty rubbery skin with congealed fat. Thighs are disgusting. The meat tastes 'dirty' too game like. Breast has better texture, the skin there is tastier gets so crispy, very versatile in any dish pretty much.

Because it belongs on a chicken that never left a barn with 10,000 others, was starved of food and water 24 hours (at least) before being roughly forced in to a plastic crate on its way to be hung upside down and dropped in to boiling hot electrified water?

I love thighs breasts are shite

I'm thinking that you're not giving much thought to the thigh Vs breast issue there.

🤣

Smilelesstalkmore · 18/10/2022 18:47

Thighs are much tastier but I don't really like dealing with raw chicken at all, so I usually just buy diced chicken breast.

IncompleteSenten · 18/10/2022 18:49

Chicken thighs are imo so much nicer than the breast meat. I find that really dry in comparison.

My favourite part of the chicken are those two tiny bits of meat on the bone when you turn the carcass over. I have called permanent dibs on those in this house.

MadameMinimes · 18/10/2022 18:50

I strongly prefer thigh over breast for most purposes too. I think tastes are changing and thigh is more popular now, with people cooking more food from cuisines that use thigh much more than breast. People are also looking for cheaper options. I think that’s why it’s selling out. They’ve always stocked a lot more breast than thigh in U.K. supermarkets but I’ve never had trouble with it being sold out until recently because there hasn’t tended to be much demand for it.

GloriousGlory · 18/10/2022 18:50

Chicken thigh lover here! Breast so dry and tasteless

I don't boil my chicken thighs, I tend to grill them or use them in a casserole.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 18/10/2022 18:53

I've had thighs many many times, in restaurants, cooked by other people, cooked by myself. I still dislike the texture and would always choose breast meat. I prefer a drier texture . I am a good cook. 🤷‍♀️

More for you as I'm not buying them!

That’s grim.

Something I didn’t know.

Hopeislost · 18/10/2022 19:01

I much prefer thigh fillets to breast fillets! Aldi even had drumstick fillets the other week but I haven't seen them since.

I wish I could find boneless and not skinless though, as I love chicken skin!

Iwantachange · 18/10/2022 19:02

Always buy chichen thighs on the bone, and then cut the bones off and use them when I make soup. In the winter or when sick you just can't beat a nice soup made from boiled thigh bones, gives it all the flavour 😍

I did grow up in a household where mum would buy whole chicken, dissect it and use pretty much every single part of it.

My mums secret to crispy chicken skin: mustard and sweet paprika rub on the skin before putting in oven!

billy1966 · 18/10/2022 19:06

Thigh here for me, but breast can be quicker to cook.
For anything slow cooked, thighs are delicious.

I love chicken stock for soup or to throw into a chicken curry with loads of turmeric and ginger.

I usually buy thighs because they have more flavour. If you have decent knife skills, it only takes a minute to skin & de-bone each one. I usually chuck the bones into whatever I’m cooking for added flavour, then fish them out (& gnaw on them Blush) before serving.

larkstar · 18/10/2022 19:09

Longdistance · 18/10/2022 17:13

Chicken breast is overrated. I prefer thigh, it’s much juicier and tastier than breast. Cooking chicken breast en masse is like eating saw dust.

Agreed. Chicken breast is also quite easy to overcook leaving it dry and fibrous. I use thighs for all slow cooker recipes - I don't bother buying the pre-skinned and pre-boned thighs because they do such a sh!t job of it - you turn them out of the pack and see the remains of the skin wrapped up underneath and there are always slivers of bone left if you don't check. If I use breast and really have to make sure I flash fry it - just brown the outside a leave the middle uncooked - then I use it in casseroles, risottos and curries - it's far cheaper than breast and worth the hassle of prepping it myself as it tastes so much better.

Sniffypete · 18/10/2022 19:14

Thighs are now more expensive than breast!

Imicola · 18/10/2022 19:14

None of our local butchers even stock chicken thighs as apparently there is no demand... bonkers, they are far superior to breast.

I agree with all of that.

I never really find thighs that much cheaper, once you consider all the inedible bits the actual meat isn’t a lot.

I agree. They're always a bit gristly and slimy, I don't think they taste any different either.
