People that moan about migrants coming to this county - taking our jobs - taking our houses - draining the medical system - not settling in the first country they reach for asylum- they're racist right? There will always be an element of migration and when you take account of UK born people that leave and non Uk people that enter our country, the net figure is no doubt reasonable. They are often willing to work and contribute to our society and economy - so why the hostility? Why not accept as a country that we have en element of migration and embrace that, if not because your views are racist?

That’s an important point. I remember watching an interview with Konstantin Kisin of Triggernometry and he (an immigrant himself) said something similar - a welfare state requires borders and clean immigration rules.

The demographics in the UK are such that 'zero immigration' would result in a substantial reduction in the state pension and provision of care homes. The majority of elderly would need to move in and be cared for by family.

Birmingham is flipping horrible for it! Was only there for a night. Never seen as many riot vans in my life. I checked the news I was so shocked. All asian 6 stabbings in one night & full on isis recruitment there. You wonder why people don't like racist or not its the truth everyone hates it. Report I don't care. Its the truth

I’m not racist. However, I feel that right now, Britain is too overcrowded and our resources are too stretched to accept anyone else. It doesn’t matter if they’re black/white/Asian or any other race, it still counts. It’s not to say that we can’t have people from abroad in the future but I’d fully support a 5 year complete immigration ban, followed by far more stringent immigration rules.

I haven't said "white people are all child abusers". I said the majority of child abusers in the Uk are white in response to the racist posts earlier in the thread. This is a statistical fact

It’s interesting to me that settled immigrants are often the ones calling loudest for the borders to be controlled. Why do you think that is?

Imagine natural life expectancy, if you charted it it would look like a triangle. If you looked at the UK without immigration you'd be looking at an inverted triangle with there being more elderly people than children being born. At some point that triangle will collapse as it's top heavy.

We need immigrants to balance the inverted triangle

Ooh if there had been more affordable housing and opportunities previously then we wouldn't need so much as people would have had more dc and the housing wouldn't be so expensive
Maybe they could stay home rather than both partners having to work

There are quite a few people on the thread who seem to think that only criminals should be prevented. There are also people in the public discussion on this who take that view - there was a Guardian columnist for example whose name is escaping me at the moment.

Their argument is essentially that the idea of citizenship is inherently "racist" by which they mean xenophobic.

IWishItWasChristmas seems pretty close to that view, maybe even wholly embracing it.

Not sure about „loudest“ - settled immigrants are probably calling for controlled borders at the same rate as born-and-bred locals, and why wouldn’t they? It’s about controlled borders, not closed borders.
Why would you expect all immigrants to be in favour of uncontrolled immigrantion? They’re not a homogeneous mass - some of them work hard and strive to integrate, some of them don’t, different groups don’t always get on with one another.

I remember having a discussion with an American woman in the UK about Brexit and FOM. I was against Brexit, she was in favour of it - one of her arguments was that people like her had to jump through so many hoops to be able to settle in the UK, while EU citizens could just move here. I must admit, I can see her point.

We have an ageing population, without immigration our "natural" population would be declining. We actually need more immigrants or we face a lot higher taxes.

Brexit has resulted in huge changes to the nature of immigration to the UK.

Over one million EU citizens have left the UK. Census data released last November indicated than one million EU citizens in England and Wales who had applied to the post-Brexit EU Settlement Scheme were no longer in the UK.

These are replaced by non-EU citizens. 1.1 million entry clearance grants were given from June 2021 and June 2022. Only 64,700 of these grants were to EU citizens.

Well I want negative immigration. People could come to the UK if more people left the UK. Don't care what race any of the people arriving/leaving are - but we need to reduce numbers IMO. We have the same number of people as france, but in a country half the size. Everything is over busy - from the NHS to the car mechanic to the schools. With that in mind, I'd prefer that anyone arriving would have skills to fill those gaps - work in NHS, teach, fix cars etc.
