Is this a scam text? Worried sick

Posting for my mum!

sister is on night out, doesn’t keep in touch every night in her 30s. Mum received this text “hi mum smashed my phone, using a friends but it’s running out of battery. Can you text me on my new number?” (Then had a new number)

I told my mum it’s a scam because

  1. she never usually gets in touch why the need to get in touch tonight?
  2. she’s not replied to mymesssges but they’re being delivered
  3. how would she have got a new phone so quick?
  4. why not text off the new number?

going to show replies to mum who’s now worried sick and probably won’t sleep

It's 100% a scam. I've seen the exact same wording on a few TikTok's warning about it

Yarnosaur · 15/10/2022 20:11

It's a well known scam.

DrunkenKoala · 15/10/2022 20:11

i had a that exact one last week. My kids are 7 (doesn’t own a phone) and 13 (he was upstairs at time).

Getofftheladder · 15/10/2022 20:11

Scam for sure.

Poppyseed14 · 15/10/2022 20:12

100% scam

girlmom21 · 15/10/2022 20:12

It's absolutely a scam.
If your mom starts conversing they'll soon ask for money.

Sunshineandrainbow · 15/10/2022 20:13

Scam I have seen it before. Then it goes on to ask for money.

Floralnomad · 15/10/2022 20:13

It’s a well known scam , in a while she will likely get another text asking her to send money to xxx bank details to buy a new phone .

TimeForMeToF1y · 15/10/2022 20:13

Very well known scam, just block and forget

VladmirsPoutine · 15/10/2022 20:14

It's a scam. Tell your mum to message something random back like "Did you manage to get your aunt Janet's prescription this morning?"

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/10/2022 20:14

Scam

The idea is that mum will put the new number in her phone under the sister's name.

A few days later the "real" scam starts, with a text to mum from someone who appears to be her daughter.

User3456 · 15/10/2022 20:15

Yeah I had that one too. I've only got one DS and he was in the room with me when I received it.
And my friend got one too. She doesn't have any kids.
It's deffo a scam.

jetadore · 15/10/2022 20:15

100% scam. If you smash your phone you need a new phone not a new number! The SIM card will still be ok.

dementedpixie · 15/10/2022 20:17

Its a scam. I've had 2 over the last few days when both my children were in the same house so definitely not from them.

Redglitter · 15/10/2022 20:17

I got one of these recently. I dont have children 🙄

dementedpixie · 15/10/2022 20:18

Igmum · 15/10/2022 20:21

Absolute scam. There was an earlier thread about this and DD keeps sending me loads of TikTok videos warning about it.

Burgoo · 15/10/2022 20:23

ANYTHING that is not from my direct family/friend group I bin. if they want me they can call me.

popo50 · 15/10/2022 20:24

It's a very well known scam and people fall for it all the time.

Have a quick google search and show your mum the pictures which are almost all a carbon copy of the text she got

aluminiumwaterbottle · 15/10/2022 20:25

Get your sister to give your mum a ring. I think having confirmation from your sister herself is the only thing that will put your mum’s mind at rest.
