Is this a scam text? Worried sick

Posting for my mum!

sister is on night out, doesn’t keep in touch every night in her 30s. Mum received this text “hi mum smashed my phone, using a friends but it’s running out of battery. Can you text me on my new number?” (Then had a new number)

I told my mum it’s a scam because

  1. she never usually gets in touch why the need to get in touch tonight?
  2. she’s not replied to mymesssges but they’re being delivered
  3. how would she have got a new phone so quick?
  4. why not text off the new number?

going to show replies to mum who’s now worried sick and probably won’t sleep

Eek, I had this exact text last week and assumed it was a wrong number as I don't have kids.
Now knowing that it is a well-known scam makes me uneasy because if it was sent to my mum, she would 100% think it was from me and fall for it.

@User1014 - exactly what they’re hoping for unfortunately! The poor lady I know that fell for engaged in conversation and they pretended to be her daughter. Said she was in a lot of trouble and needed money urgently sent to X account. instead of thinking it was odd as her DD would never usually ask for money, she thought her DD must really have been in trouble to be asking and sent more than what was asked for 😔

Scam
I have had two of these. I delete.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/10/2022 22:58

If in doubt she can always send a text back asking which child this is. If she only has daughters she can ask is this Dean or Simon?

CormoranStrike · 15/10/2022 23:08

It’s a scam

I had the same text the other day and knew it was a scam but was very tempted to text back and string them along for a while just to waist their time.

I replied "you can't be my child as my children know how to use apostrophes".

I love this response more than words can express 😃

Had this last week supposedly from adult DS. He has never called me Mum in his life! What would anyone actually say if they busted their phone? Surely it would be more like 'Hi Mum, Canary here. I've dropped my bloody phone down the toilet again so I'm using Keiran's. Ring me on here if you need me. See you tomorrow xxx'

larkstar · 16/10/2022 00:52

This is the 3rd 4th or 5th time this same question has been asked in the past 2 weeks - isn’t this just a smashed-phone troll to add to all the other trolls?

Scam. My mum fell for it a few weeks ago and it's only her ineptness at Internet banking that meant she didn't lose just under a grand.

There's no low these scammers are not willing to stoop to. I don't believe that anyone willingly working in this field have a soul. There is another nasty scam going around called the Pig Butchering scam. The YouTuber Upper Echelon did a great video on it

The TLDR version is these scammers get to your wallet through your heart and will pretend to be a romantic partner. They will spend months deducted to forming a bond with only to stab you in the back and make you empty your bank account and crush your heart. You think you are helping the one you love only for it to turn out to be a lie. All of it.

You are left not only financially ruined but emotionally as well. I don't care how savvy you think you are but everyone has their weaknesses and a moment of vulnerability.

If you choose to screw with these scammers be careful but show no mercy. The more time you spend screwing with them the less time they are spending on a more vulnerable person.

I had this the other day replied with.

"OK honey. BTW I've passed your new number on to PC Harris so he can take your statement about your accident yesterday"

Silence

I had this message. My Daughter was standing right next to me when it came through so I replied 'nice try' and didn't get anything else!
