Milk pouring protest

What the fuck is wrong with these idiots?

https://twitter.com/rebelsanimal/status/1581251694444564486?s=46&t=rCJ8ncsUW4dOKMKpSOjI5w

So in a cost of living crisis what they've achieved is a) the waste of perfectly good milk and food (other shops they've poured milk over cheese and other dairy products that will now have to be chucked) and b) forcing underpaid and overworked retail staff to clear up their mess.

The entitlement from these absolute fuckwits is unbelievable.

Would be interested to know if dairy-free MNers agree with these particular protests?

It is disgusting. I have a friend who works in a food bank, they had to close early several days last week because they had run out of donated food. A lot of their donations come from retailers sending their excess produce to them, if the shops concerned have had to bin the food on display because it has been damaged by idiots then they have to restock their shelves with produce that might have gone to food banks like the one my friend works at. I don’t expect any of the protesters or their kids went to bed with empty bellies but instead tucked into their suppers feeling very pleased with their brave and oh so clever protests.

viques · 16/10/2022 15:17

And maybe those environmental activists should look at the impact almond milk production is having in the US, huge use of ground water after several years of drought, reduced biodiversity as hundreds of acres of land are planted with a single species meaning a huge impact for bees and other pollen loving insects as there is only food for them for a few weeks in the year, which then eventually impacts on other crops which need pollinators. Not to mention the impact on jobs for seasonal agricultural workers.

I don't agree with these protests. They are alienating people. But I do wonder about the Suffragettes, who sent letter bombs and did other illegal stuff. They got their message across and were listened to eventually, of course.

They were radical activists, but weren't wasting food, which is part of the concern here.
I think these people could do something a little more creative.

Almond milk isn't good but it's still better than dairy.

Almond milk isn't good but it's still better than dairy.

Not if you are a Californian bee, or someone whose water supply is being threatened by the reduced water table, or a seasonal agricultural worked whose livelihood is threatened.

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/10/2022 15:36

I know that vegans are very careful about the fabrics they wear etc. I notice that the one posturing in front of the car showroom was wearing glasses. I hope they were made of a material that doesn’t interfere with their vegan principles, so no plastic or other material they won’t approve of.

What a waste of resources that could have benefited many people. None of these folk seem to be employed, or are they in receipt of benefits. In which case, they should be considering people in a similar position who need the goods they’re trashing.

Hobbesmanc · 16/10/2022 15:42

Attacking the art gallery or Waitrose just seems such a lazy easy option if they were serious they should be focusing on pig farms. Or abattoirs. Or pheasant shoots.

midsomermurderess · 16/10/2022 15:44

@Hobbesmanc I imagine the would meet a considerably more robust response if they did.

Kanaloa · 16/10/2022 15:48

donquixotedelamancha · 16/10/2022 13:07

If anything a better protest (imo) would be something like what Jaden Smith does. He has a vegan food truck which provides free food to the homeless/those unable to pay.

What a bastard. What did the poor homeless people do to him?

Ha ha ha. How clever and witty and funny you are.

Realistically it’s a much better way to promote a vegan lifestyle than pouring milk all over a shop.

nobodysdaughter · 16/10/2022 16:29

@Hobbesmanc lots of activists DO focus on those places, but it doesn't get nearly as much media attention.

That's what activism is designed to do, get the issue in the media. Even amongst the blistering anger on this thread, there's been discussion about dairy and its alternatives. (I doubt it's dramatically changed anyones position on dairy though)

In a load of long winded planning meetings, it was probably even discussed how much people would hate the waste of the milk and argue about on social media!

MrsDThomas · 16/10/2022 16:34

Of course being a vegan is a choice. But by heck dont bang on about it.

i dont bang one about eating steak and drinking milk,

what I would love to do it stuff a raw beef burger down the throat of these dickheads whist super glued to a butchers shop.

midsomermurderess · 16/10/2022 16:45

I work with a vegan. It was about the first thing she said about herself. I found that a little odd, to make an announcement about what you eat. If we were going for a meal, of course it’s relevant, but to insert it first and foremost?

orangeisthenewpuce · 16/10/2022 17:09

I'd love them to try doing that in my local asda which is in a very rough area. They'd quite rightly get the shit kicked out of them. Which is why they do it in places like Waitrose.

That seems to be a rather unnecessarily violent inclination that you have.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/10/2022 17:20

I think these sorts of protests and activism do very little for the causes they are prompted by. It just makes me roll my eyes …..

Obviously there are dozens of environmental impacts from modern life and we’ve recognised that since the 60s. Some things have improved and some haven’t, mainly because growth and profit has eclipsed everything since the 80s.

TPTB are invested in lining their and their cronies pockets and bugger the populace in general and the disparity is escalating at an astonishing rate.

If you listen to the WEF and other think tanks there are lots of ideas about reducing consumption but very little in the way of explanation of how we should sustain ourselves in the current economic structure. It requires radical change from the top down and some ideas have more than a whiff of communist ideals about them.

Trouble is, humans are conditioned now to always strive for more, better, new and shiny - so even if they tried to level the playing field, corruption would occur and the greedy would make damn sure they didn’t lose out, no matter who suffers in the process.

I’m no expert but as far as I can see the problem with farming and animals etc is due to the industrialisation of it - we evolved with animals as part of our diet, and eliminating them at this stage requires other intensive farming options that deplete soil and cause a whole bunch of other problems. Unless you fancy lab grown meat and bugs which are being touted as good alternatives.

Everything is a big mess - for every apparent solution to a problem, up pop several new issues to address.

Back to these protests - interesting that someone mentions agents provocateurs earlier - ie paid actors. It’s been done before - you only have to look at the undercover cops scandal. The FBI in the US have set up those with alleged extremist views and given them the rope to hang themselves by providing weapons and then stopping an alleged terrorist plot. They have openly admitted it.

The instability in the world right now is unlike anything I’ve encountered in my 53 years and I’m definitely a keep calm and carry on type, but it’s getting more difficult to be optimistic as the media and our governments behave like school yard rivals and the bread and circuses theme is used to keep us all distracted and at each other’s throats.

No, I don’t have any answers and right now even voting seems like pissing in the wind.

I just try not to be part of the problem as much as possible - but apparently human existence is the whole problem so wtf are we supposed to do about that?

It is actually maddening in the true sense of the word.

BigChesterDraws · 16/10/2022 17:25

What are they hoping to achieve? By ruining all the milk, the stores will have to order more to replace it which will increase demand for dairy products. Surely that’s counter-productive?

Suzi888 · 16/10/2022 17:32

I’m vegan.

The dairy industry is cruel- however I don’t agree with wasting milk/ cheese that animals have suffered immensely to produce for human consumption, to just be thrown around and wasted.

I don’t they’re terrorists. Let’s not be overly dramatic… 🙄

For some of these people it is a cult which they adhere to and want everybody else to as well. It is a mark of their self righteousness and justification.

Oh for goodness sake cows have been milked for hundreds of years. Our ancestors did it and we do it. There is probably more caretaking of animals than ever there was

I've found my people, clearly! I would also pay good money to see them try it...

Ha! Of course!

I’m back up in the north east now but I lived and worked on a riding yard as a teen near muirhouse (which will remain nameless because I’ve bitched about it in here but you’ll ken it) and drylaw westerhailes and west pilton we’re three places we’d only go in pairs at night

Protests like this don’t make sense, people who want to buy milk will still buy milk. Their protest just means a large amount of milk has gone to waste and even more will need to be purchased to meet demand.

A better course of action would be to buy plant-based milks and stand in the milk aisle giving them out for free as an alternative for the people who are there to buy milk. Thats more likely to change somebody’s habit than pouring milk everywhere, inconveniencing and alienating the people you want to convert.

100% this.
