To not get the Karen’s Diner concept?

WingsgivenbyRedBull · 15/10/2022 16:54

So I get that the staff are suppose to be rude and tell you to fuck off to then make you a “Karen”.

But I don’t get why you’d want to be verbally abused and apparently the food isn’t great either - this apparently means I have no sense of humour.

If you don’t like it then don’t go

Why should we care if this particular place went out of business? I don't.

No one has to care but actively working on it is shitty

Even if it's not to your taste, people still work there, so you want people to be unemployed, then? Especially in the recession etc...

The people that work there would, plus they take your card details on booking

wackamole · 15/10/2022 20:47

I don't care if some neoliberal hypercapitalist idiot person wants to actively go and pay to be insulted; and to defend that choice. That's their choice. Maybe it even seems "retro cool" to people who weren't around for the "shock jock" nonsense of the late 1990s/early 2000s and don't know how to understand history. However, if you support or normalise this "Karen" nonsense, you ARE a misogynist, an anti-black racist, and a rape apologist. Because that is what this term was specifically designed to do: to say that women are objects to be used sexually, and to pretend that black people said so so it's OK. These are lies.

Thanks to whomever posted the link upthread!! I'm in the USA and we don't have this crap here but it looks like women haters and rape apologists in Australia (why?) want to impose this on us.

Not in my name. We have our own issues with anti-black racism, misogyny, rape culture, and classism here in the USA, and we have our hands full fighting them. Absolutely no reason to import more.

I think moral choices are still important even in a recession, yes.
The establishment could easily rebrand couldn't they, no one is forcing them to be anti-women.

1FootInTheRave · 15/10/2022 17:29

I wouldn't eat there but I'd probably like to work there.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I can see why it would be therapeutic!

Smilelesstalkmore · 15/10/2022 20:55

I don't get the concept either?

Is it that they are so rude to you that you are supposed to then want to 'speak to the manager' and therefore become the 'Karen'?

Or is it that they are the Karens by being so rude?

It's a crap idea but social media seems to love it.

The thing is, you'd rather people be unemployed because it doesn't agree with your morals.

But women work there too; it's not just men, so wouldn't it be anti-women to insinuate that the company goes bust and women lose their jobs too?

BritWifeInUSA · 15/10/2022 21:22

Its been popular in Australia and america for years

not here in the USA. Apparently they are opening a few here soon. But it’s completely false that they have been “popular in America for years”. There isn’t a single one here yet.

MountainChalet · 15/10/2022 21:29

Not my cup of tea but some people seem to like the novelty so fair play to them. At least it's keeping people employed so that's a plus.

Abusive restaurants have absolutely been a thing for many years. Not specifically karens but thats just one out of many of them that have existed for a long time.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 15/10/2022 21:37

I think there's humour and fun, ....and there's this. I really hate the whole 'Karen' thing and wish it would die.

Contrarian and even personally self-hating iexpressions are not equivalent to ttargeted misogynist, rape apologist, and anti-black racist hatred and whipping up of prejudices to call for violence. I believe that these things will be widely opposed in the USA; we have too much a history of systemic racism, misogyny, etc. (and perhaps too much of a sense of community) to just let this kind of virulent, targeted anti-woman and anti-black hatred stand.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 15/10/2022 21:47

I mean, you could have a 'go to be insulted' thing, but to make it Karen themed just sounds misogynistic.

I don't think misogyny is just a matter of "my" morals. I did not suggest making fake bookings, I've never done anything like that, but would I shed a tear if the place in question closed down? Of course not.
Women work in Hooters, but I'd still be pleased to hear they had gone out of business.

InCheesusWeTrust · 15/10/2022 22:03

I checked ther wiki and these made me bitterly laugh
The restaurant's concept initially drew a mixed response, raising concerns about whether the environment of mutual insults could expose employees to abuse by customers.[5]

😂😂😂 Like you need a concept for customers to abuse staff😂😂😂

That's because it is. It's the current go-to misogynistic insult for thick people, like "your mum" used to be.

Unfortunately, if it wasn't Karen it would be something else. I just feel really bad for people who really are called Karen because I think I'd find this incredibly wearying, and actually quite depressing, if it had happened with my name.

Hopefully the diner thing is too gimmicky and faddy to stick around for long.

It's not even current anymore surely? I thought most people who were stupid enough to use it had moved on now.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 15/10/2022 22:19

YANBU.

Its hard enough getting good service these days anyway I’d hate to be purposefully getting a bad service!

WingsgivenbyRedBull · 15/10/2022 22:20

ChocFrog · 15/10/2022 20:29

If it’s a Karen themed diner then shouldn’t it be the guests being rude to the staff, not the other way round?

I find it kinda depressing, the world needs more niceness not more mocking of women / promoting misogynistic stereotypes.

If they love rudeness, is tempting to book out a load of their tables and not turn up. But that would be too rude.

No. The diners are suppose to become Karen’s because they will complain about the bad service.

Most people who are stupid enough to use it are clinging on for dear life. Perhaps because they're worried the next one will be three syllables and therefore beyond them.

I do think it'll have had its day eventually, but there are a lot of stupid people, and if there's one thing stupid people love, it's an easy misogynistic slur. They go really nutty defending it, too.

Not my thing but I can’t get worked up about its existence - who cares?! I’m not policing what other people can like
